Sandhill E-News
Week of 9/9/2024
A Message from Mr. Johnson:
We’ve wrapped up a great first week, with everyone learning and relearning the routines that make Sandhill such a special place. We also took time to reground ourselves in our PBIS system, focusing on our universal rules, and we ended the week on a high note with our PBIS kickoff and our first Golden Stella Assembly!
As you may have heard from your students, our new fingerprint Point of Sale (POS) system in the lunchroom hasn’t gone as smoothly as planned. For now, we’ve returned to using lunch cards, and we’ll continue working on a long-term solution. Thank you for your patience as we adjust!
Looking ahead, our September Working for Kids Meeting is tomorrow night at 6:30 PM in the Sandhill Elementary Library, where I’ll be sharing more about our Title I Schoolwide Program.
Lastly, we’re still searching for two talented staff members to join our team: a Learning Strategist and an Educational Assistant. If you or someone you know is interested, not having the necessary degree or license isn’t a barrier—I can help with obtaining qualifications. Here are the links to apply:
- Learning Strategist Position (Bachelor's Degree Required, but Education Degree is not)
- Educational Assistant Position (No College Degree Needed)
I hope you’ve had a great weekend, and we’ll see you tomorrow!
Bob/Mr. Johnson
School Reminders
What is PBIS?
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It also improves teacher health and wellbeing. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives. We use ‘students’ to refer to all children and youth in any educational or therapeutic setting (e.g., K-12 school, early childhood program, treatment program, juvenile justice program). Learn more about PBIS in schools, classrooms, early childhood programs and juvenile justice programs on those topic pages.
Schools implementing PBIS:
- Use a continuum of evidence-based practices to support student needs
- Engage students, families, and community members to co-create culturally responsive practices
- Regularly check the effectiveness of their practices
- Rely on teams to guide implementation
- Use data to identify strengths, uncover needs, and monitor student progress
- Implement universal screening
- Develop content expertise through coaching and on-going professional development
PBIS is not a curriculum you purchase or something you learn during a one-day professional development training. It is an ongoing commitment to supporting students, educators, and families through systems change. When you implement PBIS well, students experience improved behavioral, social, emotional, and academic outcomes; schools and programs reduce their use of exclusionary discipline practices and improve their overall climate.
Annual Permission Form
Please follow this link to give your permission for your child to accompany their class on any field trips off campus that may occur during the 24-25 school year. Only about 17% of Sandhill families have completed this form so far.
On this form you will also be asked if you approve that your child's finger be scanned in order for them to purchase school lunch from Taher.
School Pictures
If your child got their picture taken on August 29th at Back to School Conferences you can order pictures by following this link. The code to order a picture package online is: EVT4N3ZHJ
We Are Allergy Aware
We are a nut-aware district and ask that our students and families be aware and considerate of the medical needs of our students/staff. We strongly discourage sending any nut or nut products to school with your children.
Monthly Working For Kids (WFK) Meetings
What: We meet monthly to plan events and work on ways to continue to support our students and our staff here at Sandhill. From fun events such as the Annual Fall Festival and Crane Games, Scholastic Book Fairs, and the Read-a-thon to providing snacks and meals for our staff and celebrating Staff Appreciation Week every spring, we are busy year-round and are always looking for new faces and new ideas.
When: Our next meeting of this school year is Monday, September 9 at 6:30pm. Starting in September, we meet the second Monday of every month at 6:30 pm (exception is April 15 due to no school on April 8). Meetings last about one hour.
Where: Sandhill Elementary School Library
***If you would like to attend a meeting but are unable to do so in person, please let us know and we are happy to provide a Zoom link.
***We love it when we can provide childcare during our meetings. So if someone in your household (middle schooler, high schooler, or adult) is interested in earning some extra cash, please consider signing up! Sign up to babysit during our monthly WFK meeting!
