Macleans Primary School Community
Hello Everyone
Have you seen the hall? The hall is really taking shape now and looking great, and it will be even greater in a few weeks when it is all completed. We can't wait to get in there! There will be an open invitation to the community to join for us the hall blessing before it opens.
Thanks to all the parents of Y4-Y6 students who have made their respective EOTC/Camp payments. Please continue to make payments and contact me here at Macleans Primary if we need to discuss different payment options.
Swimming competitions were great fun this week. The Y1-Y3 fun swim was held in much better weather conditions than the Y4-Y6. Fortunately we were able to squeeze in the Y4-Y6 competitive races with much house cheer. Thanks to all the parents who attended and helped :)). We had the fun Y4-Y6 swimming today with even more house cheer today!
Also on the school pool, a huge THANKS to the PTA for looking after the pool for a few Friday after-school swims. The is one more Friday after-school swims this Friday, the last one for the term. Maybe if we have some good weather in Term 4 the PTA Friday after-School Swim will return!
This Friday - 22 March - we will be conducting our Emergency Procedures Practice & Lockdown. This is a school-wide practise and will involve each year group being briefed on what to do in an Emergency Lockdown with the actual practice being held at 12.30pm. We are guided through the practise by experts, and the discussion with the students is presented in a way that is age appropriate. You may get a text and/or email that is part of the planned practice that states "Macleans Primary is in a Lockdown Practice' (or similar). We will be discussing the practice with the children and we ask that you do the same as this may alleviate concerns children may have. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the upcoming Emergency Planning Lockdown this Friday.
Please note the final newsletter of the term will be in 3 weeks time - Wednesday 10 April. Likely a notice or two within the next 3 weeks, however.
Enjoy the content in this newsletter as there is definitely much of Macleans Primary to celebrate and share in this newsletter!

Internal Environment Monitoring Devices (IEMs)
The MoE is rolling out Internal Monitoring Environment Devices across all classrooms in NZ. We have all of our IEMs installed now. An IEM measures the environment and is a reminder for when a window/door needs opening to provide more ventilation or change humidity levels. IEMs also remind when lighting, temperature or sound levels need addressing.

Ramadan and Holi Displays in the Office (Thanks Mrs Aye)
New Zealand: One Country Many Cultures at Macleans Primary School
Every year, Muslims fast each day of Ramadan from dawn until dusk, for the duration of the month. This year, Ramadan is expected to begin in the evening on Sunday, March 10, 2024 and end on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. The Islamic Calendar follows a lunar cycle, and while these are the calculated expected dates of Ramadan, they can differ from place to place based on moon-sightings or lack thereof. Some Muslims strictly follow calculations, while others strictly follow moon-sightings, and some follow a combination of both. What Muslims choose to follow can depend on their religious convictions, where they have lived in the world, and what their families practice. The day after the end of Ramadan (Wednesday, April 10, 2024) is a religious holiday called Eid-al-Fitr.
Holi is Celebrated On Monday 25 March
Holi is a Hindu festival that has been celebrated since ancient times. The Holi Festival is celebrated as a way to welcome in spring, and also is seen as a new beginning where people can release all their inhibitions and start fresh. It is said that during the Holi Festival, the gods turn a blind eye, and it’s one of the few times extremely devout Hindus allow themselves to let loose. They open up and enjoy each other’s company, take time to dance and party, and throw their cultural norms to the side. On the first day of the festival, a bonfire is lit to symbolically burn away all the bad and give way to a colourful and vibrant new future.

Un-Packing The New Macleans Local Curriculum in 2024 Hauora
Hauora
Hauora is well-being. Hauora is a Māori philosophy of health unique to Aotearoa. It comprises of 4 parts (see below). At Macleans Primary our Values link and align with Hauora. We endeavour that in all we do at Macleans Primary has an underpinning of Hauora, from, our day to day interactions between children and adults and the strategic direction of the school.
Taha tinana (the physical dimension): Physical wellbeing as well as the physical body, its growth, development, and ability to move, and ways of caring for it.
Taha hinengaro (the mental dimension): Mental and emotional wellbeing including coherent thinking processes, acknowledging and expressing thoughts and feelings, and responding constructively.
Taha whānau (the family dimension): Social wellbeing exploring family relationships, friendships, and other interpersonal relationships; feelings of belonging, compassion, and caring; and social support.
Taha wairua (the spiritual dimension): Spiritual wellbeing and the values and beliefs that determine the way people live, the search for meaning and purpose in life, and personal identity and self-awareness. (For some individuals and communities, spiritual wellbeing is linked to a particular religion; for others, it is not.)
Each of these four dimensions of Hauora influences and supports the others.
