Message from Dr.Taylor
Dear Mustangs,
While our school continues to buzz with activity and learning, I am currently attending the National Education Conference in New Orleans. This valuable professional development provides educational leaders from across the country an opportunity to share pioneering innovative approaches to education that I'm excited to bring back to Mundelein.
The conference features hundreds of workshops addressing critical issues that directly impact our school community:
- School safety and emergency response protocols
- Strategies to combat chronic absenteeism
- Teaching effectively in our increasingly divided world
- Leading with an understanding of student variance and diverse learning needs
- Bridging literacy gaps for all learners
- Responsible integration of artificial intelligence in education
Rest assured that our amazing administrative team and staff continue to maintain the excellent day-to-day operations at MHS. I look forward to sharing specific insights with our leadership team upon my return.
Read on to stay informed about key dates, registration details, and ways to get involved in our vibrant school community.

Illinois 5Essentials Survey
MHS families, please check your inbox for an email from School District 120 which will include a link to the Illinois 5Essentials Survey.
D120 is participating with the Illinois State Board of Education in the 2025 statewide survey of school climate and learning conditions through Friday, March 28.
The 5Essentials Survey provides a unique opportunity for students, teachers and parents to have a voice in their schools. This is your chance to provide input concerning your child’s education. We will take all of your input seriously and use it to continually review and update our current educational practices.
The survey is administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago and provides a comprehensive picture of a school’s organizational culture in an individualized report measuring the five essentials critical for school success:
Effective leaders
Collaborative teachers
Involved families
Supportive education
Ambitious instruction
Survey results will be sent to District 120 and will be included in the Illinois State School Report Card next fall.
Results will never be connected to your child. No individual will be identified in the school reports and teachers and administrators will not see individual responses.

March is...Women's History Month
Women's History Month begins March 1st. “The National Women’s History Month’s theme for 2025 celebrates,“Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.” This theme celebrates the collective strength and influence of women who have dedicated their lives to education, mentorship, and leadership. Through their efforts, they have served as an inspiration for all generations — both past and present."
"Throughout history, the process of information sharing has been a powerful catalyst for change. An honest, open examination of new insights and knowledge can create a framework for collaboration. This, in turn, promotes the well-being of groups, businesses, communities, and society as a whole. From classrooms to boardrooms, and from grassroots movements to global initiatives, women educators and leaders have played a pivotal role in nurturing minds and inspiring transformative action. Our 2025 theme spotlights the contributions women have made to the American educational system, the free marketplace of ideas, and the very fabric of our democracy."

Feature: Patsy Mink, Political Trailblazer (1927-2002)
Patsy Matsu Takemoto Mink was an American attorney and politician from Hawaii. Mink was a third-generation Japanese American. After graduating as valedictorian of the Maui High School class in 1944, she attended the University of Hawaii at Mānoa for two years. Then, she enrolled at the University of Nebraska, where she experienced racism and worked to have segregation policies eliminated.
After illness forced her to return to Hawaii to complete her studies there, she applied to 12 medical schools to continue her education but was rejected by all of them. She decided to study law instead and was accepted at the University of Chicago Law School. While at university, she met and married a graduate student, John Francis Mink.
When they graduated in 1951, Mink was unable to find employment as a married Asian woman, and after the birth of their daughter, the couple moved to Hawaii. Mink was refused the right to take the bar examination due to the loss of her Hawaiian territorial residency upon marriage, so Mink challenged the sexist statute. Though she won the right to take the test and passed the examination, she could not find public or private employment because she was married and had a child.
Mink’s father helped her open her own practice, and Mink became a member of the Democratic Party. Mink ran for a seat in the territorial House of Representatives. Winning the race, she became the first Japanese-American woman to serve, and two years later, the first woman to serve in the territorial Senate. In 1960, Mink gained national attention when she spoke in favor of the civil rights platform at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles.
Mink ran for federal office and won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1964. Mink served 12 terms (24 years), representing Hawaii’s at-large and second congressional district. While in Congress, she introduced the first comprehensive initiatives under the Early Childhood Education Act, which included the first federal child-care bill, and worked on the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. In 1970, she became the first person to oppose a Supreme Court nominee based on discrimination against women. Mink initiated a lawsuit which led to significant changes to presidential authority under the Freedom of Information Ac. She co-authored the Higher Education Act’s Title IX Amendment, later renamed the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act.
Mink was a trailblazer; President Barack Obama called her “a passionate advocate for opportunity and equality and realizing the full promise of the American Dream.” Thanks to her advocacy, 11.5 million women now attend college, and 3.5 million participate in sports.

Mundelein Theatre presents this year’s Group Interpretation, Orion and the Dark by Charlie Kaufman and Emma Yarlett.
SYNOPSIS: Orion is afraid of…well most things, but especially nighttime and the dark. That is until one day, Dark and the other entities of the night have had enough and decide to bring Orion along as they spread night across the world. Will Orion finally overcome his fear of the Dark or will his sheer presence destroy Dark and night, leaving the world permanently and irreparably altered?
Our performance transforms this touching children’s tale (adapted from the 2023 film screenplay and the children’s picture book) into a unique interpretation involving a variety of theatrical stylings as well as music.

Mundelein Graduates Brings Women in Construction Workshop to MHS
On Tuesday, March 4, MHS graduate Juliana Roznowski and her team of engineers, project managers, laborers, and other professionals from Mortenson Construction came to MHS to speak to a group of students on how women have shaped and will continue to shape the world of civil engineering and construction. This workshop, titled Women in Construction featured a five-person panel that gave advice, encouragement, and insight to a group of 14 students.
After the panel, the team from Mortenson treated our students to a pizza luncheon and gave them a chance to walk through construction sites using virtual reality and augmented reality headsets. Additionally, the students had the chance to converse with each of the professionals on their own and learn more about education requirements and listen to stories of how their careers have evolved over the years.
Click on the photos below to see some moments from the event! A sincere thank you to Juliana and her team from Mortenson for putting on a fantastic workshop redefining the word possible!
Juliana, you have made us all incredibly proud of your achievements!
NyproMold Offers Student Immersive Experiences in Manufacturing and Explores Ways to Recruit Future Engineers
NyproMold is a world leader in the design and manufacture of high-precision plastic injection molds. Last spring, the company hosted a table at the 2024 MHS Job Expo to recruit students and graduates into the field of manufacturing.
The next month received a call from Rich Steuber, Operations Manager at the plant in Gurnee, regarding the possible hire of one of our students, Rishi Sahu (‘06) as a summer intern. After spending the summer learning about the various aspects of manufacturing, NyproMold retained Rishi as an intern, where he continues to gain experience in the various aspects of manufacturing, such as computer numerical control and computer aided design.
This week, five staff members from the MHS CTE team visited NyproMold to discuss ways the company could partner with the school to open up more opportunities for engineering-minded students… and Rishi was the featured star at the conference table as well as the tour of the plant.
Check out the photos below to see Rishi in action!
Local Shop Sponsors “Careers as a Barber” Presentation
One of the perks of being a staff member at MHS for almost three decades is the ability to connect with graduates and give them a chance to inspire the Mustangs that followed in their wake. On Thursday, March 6, graduate Wendy Sanchez (Class of 2003), owner of Brothers Barber Shop in downtown Mundelein, and her staff member Charly, spoke to students in our College & Career Resource Center.
Wendy, who owns the shop with her husband Wilmer Sanchez, opened with some advice on how students can get started on their own careers in the field. “Practice… a lot,” she shared. “With practice comes the confidence you will need to build your clientele,” she added. “It’s hard work at first, but barbers have so much fun on the job--the clients are the best part!”
Sanchez also commented on the sense of community and connection that defines the barber shop experience. “Whether you’re a scheduled appointment or a walk-in client, you’re always welcome at Brothers.”
Her staff member Charly then spoke about his own career journey, then took questions from the students. Some of the students even walked away with a coupon for $10 off any service that Brothers offers!
You can stop by and see Wendy and Charly at Brothers Barber Shop, located at 439 N. Lake Street in downtown Mundelein or check them out on Instagram @brothersbarbershop847!
