Web Updates: Guidance Presentation Videos
The Guidance Department page on the school's website has a couple additions. A new Calendar tab highlights dates of College Admission Rep Visits, in addition to Guidance Department presentations. Also, a Video & Audio tab hosts recordings of Guidance Department presentations. The Senior Parent Information Sessions for September and October 2024 are available.
Coming Soon: $5 ID Replacement Fee
Soon it will cost $5 for students to replace their ID Card. We have been fortunate not to charge for ID Card replacement, but we can no longe continue this practice. This puts LaGuardia in line with other high schools' replacement fees.
What Can NYCSA Do?
NYCSA now allows you to submit digital versions of paper forms directly. Using technology powered by Docusign, you can fill out and sign a digital form that will be made immediately available to your school. You will no longer need to submit paper versions of these forms to your school. NYCSA currently hosts the following forms:
- Media Consent For NYC Department of Education Use
- Request to Identify Parents on Active Duty in the Armed Forces
- Special Education Recovery Services Form (for students with IEPs only)
- Digital Equity Family Questionnaire
- Student Ethnic and Race Identification Form
- Housing Questionnaire
- Military Recruitment Opt Out
Condom Availability Program (CAP)
The Condom Availability Program is part of the HIV/AIDS education program in New York City Public Schools. NY State requires HIV/AIDS education for all students, every year. The information that students get through the Condom Availability Program helps them learn how to:
- live a healthy life
- make good decisions that keep them safe
- communicate with others
- avoid risky behavior
We offer high school students a Condom Availability Program to help them make decisions that can keep them healthy and safe. Students in grades 9-12 can go to their school’s Health Resource Room to request free:
- condoms
- information about HIV/AIDS
- information about reproductive and sexual health and other health topics, including healthy relationships
- referrals to health clinics and services in the neighborhood
- information about how to get tested for sexually transmitted infections
So where can you get condoms and advice:
Room 206B, Maya, RAPP Counselor
Room 208A , Dr. Cambell, Social Worker
Room 234A, Alex, SAPPIS
Room 261, Dr. Stricklin-Witherspoon, Assistant Principal

Progress Report for MP1 Release on Monday, the 28th
Dear LaGuardia Students, Parents, and Guardians,
Friday, October 18, 2024 was the end of our 1st marking period. On Monday, October 28, 2024, students and families will have access to the 1st marking period Progress Report in NYCSA, where teachers report on student progress by providing a grade and comments. Families should schedule time to review this progress report together, determine next steps to celebrate the students’ areas of strength, and put in place support for areas that need improvement.
For this 1st marking period, all grades are reported using the letters P, D, or F.
- P is Passing. Students who are averaging a grade higher than 70 receive a P.
- D is in Danger of Failing. Students who are averaging a grade between 65-70 receive a D.
- F is Failing. Students who are averaging a grade below 65 receive an F.
Teachers also had a bank of comments that they could choose from to capture the student’s progress in narrative form.
Although LaGuardia is an annualized high school, transcript updates are semester-based. Students receive final grades at the end of each semester - Fall and Spring. Each semester has three marking periods. Progress reports are generated for the 1st and 2nd marking periods, followed by a final report card for the 3rd marking period. The grades for the 3rd marking period report card appear on the official transcript. The grades on the 1st and 2nd marking period progress reports do not appear on the official transcript. Attendance records also do not appear on the official transcript.
Students can access their marks by visiting Teach Hub, the DOE portal used to support students. Students should sign in with their DOE Student Accounts, and then navigate to Student Report Cards (available in the Student Documents icon).
Parents/Guardians can access student marks by signing into their NYCSA account, which can be found at www.schoolsaccount.nyc and then navigating to the Grades button.
Please contact the teacher directly if you have questions about the 1st marking period progress report grade and/or comments. Our faculty/staff directory can be found here: https://www.laguardiahs.org/directory/faculty
We look forward to a productive school year.
My very best to you,
Jonathan Abikzer

Filipino History & Heritage
Today’s Filipino artist is Pacita Abad. Her family escaped political persecution from the Marcos’ regime. She eventually settled and attended Corcoran School of Art and the Art Students League of New York.
Abad’s earliest paintings were of social or political subjects “I have always believed that an artist has a special obligation to remind society of its social responsibility,” she said. Her work segued into Abstract painting, where she developed an art technique called trapunto painting, which involved stuffing and stitching her canvases to create a sculptural quality.
In her 30-year painting career, Abad created 5,000 artworks, exhibiting in over 200 museums and galleries, including 75 solo shows and across 70 countries. She died of lung cancer in 2004. In 2023, an exhibition of her work became the largest museum exhibit in the U.S. devoted to an Asian American female artist. We encourage you to learn more about this amazing painter and activist Pacita Abad.
Coming In December -- New Building Entry Procedure
Safer Access Initiative -- New Entry Procedures Expected to Being In December
Summary
Safer Access, coming to LaG in December, is to ensure that all doors remain locked outside of the morning-entry and afternoon-dismissal periods. When school doors are locked, individuals wishing to gain access and identify themselves before access is granted into the school building.
- Everyone must use the system with notable exceptions.
- Students and Staff may enter the building through designated doors during designated times (e.g. morning entry, open lunch periods, immediately after school) without using the Safer Access Intercom system.
Dear Families,
We have some important news to share regarding the safety measures at our school. In
line with our commitment to enhance security practices, all NYC Public Schools have/will have a
Safer Access system installed during the 2023-25 school years. The Safer Access system is
designed to strengthen our existing safety and security practices as part of the overall visitor
protocols at our school.
LaGuardia's system is installed, and this communication is part of our training process. The anticipated date of full activation is estimated to be in December.
What is Safer Access?
The primary objective of the Safer Access system is to ensure that all doors remain locked
outside of the morning-entry and afternoon-dismissal periods. When school doors are locked,
visitors wishing to gain access to the building will ring the intercom at the main entrance door and identify themselves before access is granted into the school building. Safer Access allows our dedicated staff assigned to the main desk (School Safety Agents and/or school staff) to be able to see and speak with visitors before granting them access inside. Please be assured that all visitors to our school will continue to be treated with courtesy, professionalism, and respect while awaiting entry into our building. In addition to enhancing safety, this system allows for easy access for first responders during an emergency.
Once our Safer Access system is installed and operational, our school staff (including School
Safety Agents) and students will receive training on using the system as well as how to support
all visitors in accordance with our policy.
We believe Safer Access will greatly contribute to maintaining a secure learning environment for
our students and staff.
We look forward to the NYC Public Schools Safer Access system creating a safer environment
for everyone. Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions. Thank you for your
continued support in keeping our school community safe.
Key Information
The information below is tentative and will be refined over the next month:
- Our designated Entrance Door is the second door on the far right of our regular entrance 65th/Amsterdam) and will be continually locked.
- Our Main Entrance/Exit doors will be unlocked for morning entry, Open Lunch, school dismissal, and emergency drills. The locked main entrance door is not to be deactivated or used for entry, dismissal, or emergency drills.
- For evening performances and other nighttime events, all doors will be locked a TBD amount after schedule start time. Individuals arriving once the doors are locked will have to use the intercom.
We look forward to providing more information on Safer Access as we near the system's implementation.

Filipino History & Heritage
Today we are focusing on two Filipino artists: Luis Borromeo and Katy De La Cruz.
Born in 1879, Luis Borromeo - known as Borromeo Lou and the “King of Jazz” – popularized jazz and bobadil the Filipino variation “vaudeville”. He went on to the U.S. to pursue piano studies. And performed on the famed Orpheum Circuit. “Borrromeo Lou” returned to the Philippines and introduced the Borroemeo Follies, a vaudeville-type review. Little is known about Borroemo’s later life, since his death certificate was lost during World War II.
Katy de la Cruz - a legendary Filipina singer was hailed as “The Queen of Filipino Jazz,” “The Queen of Bobadil,” and known affectionately as “Mommy Kate” in the music scene. Born in 1907, De la Cruz specialized in jazz vocals and torch songs (which are sentimental love songs). De la Cruz’s vocal style was described as impish and rustic, rounded out by her low, playfully dragging key. She became an international star. De la Cruz also received the Best Supporting Actress Award from FAMAS, known as the Filipino Oscars. At the end of a career that spanned eight decades, De la Cruz De la Cruz died at age 97.
We encourage you to learn more about this pair of legendary Filipino figures of jazz, Luis Borromeo and Katy de la Cruz.
