From the Principal
As you prepare for spending time with those who are Family, Friends and Framily (friends who ARE family) I wish you safe travels, good food, fun times and lots of new memory making. For those of us who have a harder time finding joy during this season of the year because of losses we have endured may we be warmed and comforted by the wonderful memories made in times past.
Glass Containers
Per the Family Handbook please be reminded that glass containers are not allowed at school for snack or lunch. When these glass containers break (and they do) it creates a safety hazard. Eliminating this helps us all. Thank you!
Outside Recess
Students will continue to have outside recess each and every day unless temperatures or windchill are below 0 degrees. It is important that students are dressed sufficiently for all weather conditions. Please LABEL all outer wear and if possible send indoor shoes and outdoor boots for the mucky and yucky days.
Lockdown Drill
This week we will have our 2nd security drill of the year. This drill will be a lockdown drill. During lockdown drills students are to immediately follow their teacher directions. The directions will be to move to an area of the classroom that is out of the line of site of onlookers, to remain quiet and have lights out. (If classrooms are outside for recess they are to take shelter at the warming center in the park until given the all clear.) I will come around to ensure that all exterior and classroom doors are closed and locked from the outside. Once the drill is over, students will resume with their normally scheduled day. This is the scenario that I will share with students: An animal (bird, chipmunk, squirrel, deer, etc. ) is in the building and we need to get it out without any interruptions from classes in the hallways. Please follow your teachers directions and remain as quiet as you can until you hear that we can go back to our normal schedule.

No Left Turns at Burns Park
For the safety of students, families and staff there are NO LEFT TURNS on Wells (entering or leaving) Burns Park. Please readjust your drive time so that you can enter from Olivia Ave to travel east on Wells and leave going east on Wells.
This sign is posted if you are driving West on Wells into the parking lot.
This sign is posted at the exit of the parking lot.
504 Plan vs IEP
Have you ever wondered what a 504 Plan or IEP is? Do you have questions about whether or not either one of these may be supports that your child needs or qualifies for? Does your child have a current 504 plan or IEP and you have more questions or wonderings? If yes, please join the December PTO meeting for more information. Each year after report cards go home in November, Principals (and teachers) get lots of questions about whether or not students are getting all the support they need at school. This may be you. In lieu of sending an email please join us for this informational session. Whether you are able to attend this informational or not please add questions that you have to the google form linked below. Our special education Assistant Director, Kim Cieszynski will be at Burns Park to give you all the facts you need to make informed decisions and answer all questions submitted through the google form.

IMMEDIATE VOLUNTEER NEEDS
The Burns Park Community is only made stronger by it’s volunteers and we have some immediate needs:
Family PE Night Helpers - We need seven adults to help with set up. Register here.
Fifth Grade Capstone - We need help planning the last week of school activities for our fifth graders. Help make sure our kids get a memorable and fun filled send off from Burns Park Elementary. We will split up the tasks among the volunteer group with a goal of making it very manageable for everyone. If you can find a few minutes to help out, please reach out to Ellen Delonis at ellendelonis@mac.com for more info.
Library Morning Helpers - Rachel Erdstein, our building library/media specialist, is collecting all due library materials first thing in the morning. We need a core group of 4-5 volunteers to regularly check-in and shelve materials just after drop off from 8:45-9:15 am. If you are available and willing to help sign up here.
Walk & Talk Coaches - Walk & Talk is an optional lunch recess activity where students in grades 1-5 can choose to walk or run together around a specified loop in Burns Park. For miles completed, kids earn "toe tags" they collect on a chain and wear proudly! Coaches are needed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during lunch recess to organize and distribute student lap cards, keep track of laps completed, and distribute toe tags. Sign up here.
CALL FOR YEARBOOK PHOTOS
It is time to start putting together some of our favorite memories to the Burns Park Yearbook and we need your help to make it AWESOME! Please share any photos you may have of your Penguins in action during Burns Park activities using this link.
To upload photos: click on the down arrow to find your child’s grade folder. No identifiers are needed, but please tag your photos with the classroom’s “Teacher name – event.” For example: “Hane – Lansing Field trip.” Please do not include Rec & Ed sport photos.
Here are just some of the activities we'd love to capture in the yearbook:

LOST & FOUND
The Lost & Found is currently overflowing with coats, shoes, rain boots, water bottles, books, and more. Our wonderful volunteer took photos that you can view here. Please come claim your family’s lost items weekdays from 8:15 a.m.-4:15 p.m in the hallway between the library and the gym. If you’re coming for a Halloween party or parade, it’s a great time to find a lost item. Unclaimed items will eventually be donated.
