Information and News
Thank You!
Thank you to our SGO, students, and staff for representing LaG at this past weekend's Manhattan HS Fair. The picture on the right is a moment of calm before the doors open. As most people have experienced, the HS Fairs are an important part of our recruitment t process of auditioning and selecting the most talented artists in the city.
The Test Text Message This Past Monday
From our perspective, the test of the text feature in DOE Messages this past Monday was successful. If you did not receive the test text, parents should check NYCSA to be sure that your cell phone is listed in the CELL PHONE field. If you listed your cell phone as your Home/Primary phone number, it must also appear ink the CELL PHONE field.
Website Updates
- The School Calendar can be reached using the buttons on the right side of the homepage. This will be quicker than scrolling down to the bottom of the page.
- You can add the entire School Calendar to yours using the iCal feature once you're in monthly view.
- A new tab called "Student Support" has been added to the main, red navigation bar. Here you will find Guidance, Tutoring Schedules, and 504 Information.
- Guidance Counselor caseloads and "Whom To Contact" are now on the same Google Sheet. Use the tabs at the bottom of the page to switch between the two lists.
- A "Store / Purchase Tickets" tab has also been added main, red navigation bar. Here will house things where money is collected, such as AP Exam Fees, PSAT/NMSQT, and performance tickets. A specific item will only appear when we are collecting money.
- When paying by credit card using the Forms/Store feature on the website, there is a convenience fee charged by our vendor. This fee is passed on to the user. Each transaction is changed 30 cents + 2.9%. Families who prefer to pay by cash/money order (no checks) may do so on the specified date(s), times(s), and location for each event.
Juniors: PSAT/NMSQT Registration
Students wishing to take optional PSAT/NMSQT on October 26, 2024, must register and pay $10 for exam by October 10, 2024, 4:00 PM. Go to PSAT/NMSQT Registration Form

Domestic Violence Awareness Month
This month is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, where Laguardia students and staff, alike, will be spreading awareness around the impacts of domestic violence and how to best support survivors. Our goal is to lessen the stigma against talking about Domestic Violence and shine a light on healthy relationships and what support looks like. If you'd like to get involved with programming – or any of the Relationship Abuse Prevention Program club tabling events – please reach out to Maya, the RAPP coordinator in 234I
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage
Today’s Latin artist of the day, by special request of Mrs. Baker, is Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Basquiat, born in Park Slope, Brooklyn, 1960, is part of the Neo-expressionism art movement. The son of a Haitian father and Puerto Rican mother, his love for art began as a child, going to local museums.
Basquiat first achieved notoriety as part of the graffiti duo, SAMO. By the 80s, his paintings were exhibited in galleries and museums internationally.
At 21, he became the youngest artist to exhibit at the Whitney Biennial – which is HUGE. Basquiat’s art focused on dichotomies, such as wealth vs. poverty. He uses social commentary in his paintings to identify his experiences in the black community and attack systems of racism. His work is currently at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the MoMA. We encourage you to see the work of Hispanic artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Opportunities
Freshmen:
Dear parents and guardians,
The 2025 trips to Costa Rica (February 2025) and Greece (April 2025) are officially underway! We are very excited by the interest in our trips!
We have 200+ families interested and there are only 30 initial spots that will be accepted for each tour. Space is limited!
Please note that students will be vetted based on attendance, grades, classwork completion, homework completion, and behavior. Each student will be vetted by their teachers who will give recommendations, the deans, guidance counselors, school staff, and the principal. From there students will be selected by lottery. Deadline to enroll will be Sunday, September 29. If your child is a freshman, please send in a copy of your child's 8th grade report card to lagtravel23@gmail.com.
Sign up now to guarantee a spot on the waitlist for your child:
When you create an account on the EF website, please make sure that the primary contact and emergency contact are different people.
Costa Rica (February 2025): www.eftours.com/2756409TX
Greece (April 2025):www.eftours.com/2756410DR
When you create an account and sign up to go on the trip, your child will automatically get put on a waitlist. They will then be vetted. From there selections for who will go on the trip will be made. You should not need to pay the full amount at this time. You should only need to pay a $95 deposit initially. If your child ends up not being selected for the tour, you will receive your deposit back. There will be one chaperone for every 6 students on the trip. Ms. White is the group leader. We will have our first meeting as a full group in October. A message will go out about that once all students have been enrolled. At that time, students will see everyone who will be going on the trip and be able to request who they would like to room with. Unless you choose to pay for an upgrade, most students will be in a room with 4 people.
Please view the Parent Guide to Travel from EF Educational Tours, our travel partner. This guide covers all the details about EF, including options for academic credit, payments plans and what to expect on tour. Additionally, once you are accepted on tour, you will have access to your individual fundraising page and will be able to apply for EF’s Global Citizen Scholarship.
Still have questions? EF's Traveler Support Team can help through their online chat at https://www.eftours.com/contact-us or by phone at 800-665-5364.
Attached is the PowerPoint PDF for you to review pertinent information.
For those that still have questions, please email lagtravel23@gmail.com, do not submit your questions on the QR code within the PDF.

As the 2024-2025 school year begins, the New York Civil Liberties Union is once again seeking teens to join the Teen Activist Project (TAP), a youth leadership program focused on social justice, youth activism, and the law.
The TAP program meets in-person, at least once a week every Monday from 4:15pm-6:15pm and brings together teens from all over the NYC area to discuss civil liberties issues, such as students’ rights, confidential health care rights for minors, racial justice, immigrants’ rights, LGBTQ+ rights, freedom of speech – and more. TAP members get hands-on training in peer education and community organizing. The program offers students the opportunity to learn about civil rights issues affecting their communities, develop youth-led advocacy campaigns, and work with professionals on civil liberties issues. TAP members can receive up to $600 in stipend money or community service hours.
To qualify to participate, teens must be 14 to 21 years old and in a New York City high school or a GED program. We ask that in addition to weekly or bi-weekly meetings, TAP members be available to meet after school at least one other day of the week for various events and actions. Youth who join must remain in the program for the full length of the school year to receive a stipend.
Applications are reviewed as they arrive (applying early is encouraged!). The deadline is October 11, at 11:59pm. Late applications will be disqualified. Meet and Greets will be held in mid-October after the application deadline to invite selected applicants to learn about the NYCLU, the TAP program and meet our current TAP members.
