Celebrating Constitution Week 2024: Reflecting on Our Founding Principles
As Constitution Week 2024 approaches, it’s an ideal time to reflect on the principles that underpin our democracy and celebrate the document that has guided the United States for over two centuries. From September 17 to September 23, communities across the nation will engage in various activities and educational programs to honor the Constitution's legacy. This annual observance not only commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, but also serves as a reminder of the values and ideals that continue to shape our nation.
Constitution Week was officially established in 1956, following a proclamation by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The week serves as a time for Americans to engage with their civic heritage and learn more about the Constitution’s role in their daily lives. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the rights and responsibilities that come with citizenship and to appreciate the enduring principles of democracy, liberty, and justice.
Constitution Week 2024 will feature a range of activities designed to educate and inspire our students:
Elementary Questions/Lessons
- What is the purpose of having a Constitution?
- What is the preamble or introduction to the U.S. Constitution?
- What ideas are expressed in the Preamble?
- How can the "School House Rocks: Preamble" be used to demonstrate this message to our students?
