HUBER STREET SCHOOL
SUMMER 2025

Hello Bears,
As we wrap up another school year, I want to thank you for your continued support of our school. It’s been a great year—filled with learning and laughter.
Our students have made incredible strides—not just in reading, writing, and math, but in confidence too. It’s been a joy to watch them grow, and I'm proud of each and every one of them.
As we head into summer, I hope your days are filled with a healthy mix of adventure, rest, and ice cream. Whether you’re traveling, staying close to home, or just soaking up the slower pace, may you and your family find moments of peace, fun, and connection.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in the fall; until then, have a great summer!
Sincerely,
Mr. Valente

Summer Reading
Summer is finally here!! I want to share my top five educational activities that I encourage families to explore throughout the summer.
Math Games: Play math games with your child, such as card games, board games, or online math games. Make learning math fun and engaging by incorporating games into your daily routine.
Nature Walks: Take a walk in a nearby nature reserve or trail and encourage children to observe the plants, animals, and insects they see along the way. This can be a great opportunity to teach kids about the environment and conservation.
Cooking Lessons: Teach your child how to cook a simple recipe, such as homemade pizza or cookies. Not only will they have fun creating something delicious, but they will also learn valuable cooking skills.
Book Club: Choose a book to read together as a family and have weekly discussions about the plot, characters, and themes. Encourage your child to write a book review or create a book-related craft. Click here to view summer reading book choices for all ages.
Writing Prompts: Encourage your child to write stories, poems, or journal entries based on different writing prompts. This will help improve their writing skills and creativity while also allowing them to express themselves.
Summer Reading Bingo Board Challenge
This summer, the Secaucus Public Schools are participating in a Summer Reading Bingo Board Challenge. This program is designed to help students stay engaged and excited about reading over the summer by providing them with a fun and interactive way to track their reading progress. It also encourages students to read a variety of genres and explore new books, fostering a love for reading that can carry over into the school year.
Reading is crucial for academic success as it helps improve vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. It also enhances imagination and creativity, leading to better problem-solving abilities. By encouraging your child to read regularly, you are equipping them with the essential tools for lifelong learning and curiosity. The Summer Reading Bingo Board Challenge is a great way to promote reading at home this summer. I encourage your family to participate and earn 10% off your order at Shake Shack during the first month of school.

5th Grade: Board Game Day
This month, Miss Newcombe and Mrs. Puerari’s 5th graders wrapped up the school year in the most imaginative way possible—with a Board Game Project that truly brought their learning to life!
As a culminating activity, students worked in small groups to dive into the history of board games, playing classic favorites like Clue, Sorry!, The Game of Life, and Battleship to understand different game mechanics and styles. From there, the real creativity began.
Each group collaborated to design, build, and test their own original board games—all inspired by the academic concepts they studied throughout the year. Whether solving math problems, tackling grammar challenges, answering science trivia, or going on historical adventures, students skillfully wove classroom knowledge into engaging gameplay. The results were both fun and educational, showing just how deeply they’ve learned—and how creatively they can apply that knowledge.
The grand finale was Board Game Day, where students proudly showcased their games to an enthusiastic crowd of classmates and parents. Everyone rotated through stations, trying out the imaginative creations and sharing in the laughter, learning, and a little friendly competition that filled the room.
This hands-on project was not only a celebration of academic achievement, but also a chance for students to build teamwork, critical thinking, and communication skills in a memorable, meaningful way.
5th Grade: Author's Day
On June 3rd, 5th graders in Huber Street School participated in the annual Author's Day Celebration. Students created their own stories and books.
4th Grade: Lemonade Stand
Mrs. Byrne’s 4th grade class turned June 11th into a sweet success, zipping from room to room with their legendary Lemonade Stand. Armed with cups and charm, they took orders from thirsty teachers like pros! This annual event is always eagerly anticipated.
Pre-K: Bubbles & Ice Pops
Students at the Millridge School recently enjoyed a fun-filled Bubbles and Ice Pop Party, thanks to the generous support of the PTA. The event was held as a special thank you for everyone’s enthusiastic participation in the Boosterthon. It was a joyful celebration filled with cool treats and lots of bubbly fun!
Torch Run
On Friday, June 6th, students from every school in Secaucus participated in the annual Torch Run for Special Olympics. Thank you to the Secaucus Police Department for organizing this amazing, charity event!
Art & Technology
Ms. Mandaglio and Mrs. Martin collaborated to design a unit for fifth grade students that integrated both art and technology. In this unit, students selected their favorite artist and, with guidance from Ms. Mandaglio, created artwork inspired by the chosen artist’s style. They explored how elements such as color, line, texture, and shape were used to enhance the artist’s work. Meanwhile, Mrs. Martin taught the students how to research their selected artist and create a Google Slides presentation to showcase their findings. This project not only fostered a deeper appreciation for art but also helped students develop important skills in research, organization, and presenting information through technology.

GEO BEE
On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, fourth and fifth grade students at Huber Street School demonstrated their impressive global knowledge during the annual Geography Bee. This exciting event is designed to ignite a love for learning about our world and to encourage students to think globally. After 20 intense and engaging rounds, we’re thrilled to share our 2025 winner. Congratulations to all of this year’s participants for their hard work, enthusiasm, and camaraderie!

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PICK-UP
The end of the day is a very hectic time when teachers are ensuring that each student is connected with a caregiver. We respectfully ask that you do not change your student’s pick up routine on a day-to-day basis. Understandably, emergencies and last minute changes do arise, but for safety reasons we ask that you help us to keep our dismissal procedures consistent for both our staff and students.
If you need to pick up your student early for an appointment, or special reason, they must be picked up before 9th period which begins at 2:15 pm (12:00pm on one-session days.) Last period often includes special area classes and time set aside for wrapping up activities and packing up for the day which makes it difficult for our security staff to continue to monitor the building if they are also being asked to locate and get students early from their classes.
If you wish your student to be picked up by a person not on your pick-up list, you must send a note in with them in the morning, or an email to your child's homeroom teachers, in addition to Kim Pascarello (kpascarello@sboe.org) and Coleen Mason (cmason@sboe.org) in the main office.
Please make sure to state the person’s name, relationship to your student and a contact phone number for the person.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH
The federal government's universal free lunch program expired and our schools will return to offering free and reduced school lunch to only students who qualify based on family income. Families are encouraged to complete the Free and Reduced Lunch application if they believe they qualify.
As in previous years, if you would like to purchase lunch, please replenish your child's lunch account by logging into the Payforit.net (https://www.payforit.net/Login.aspx) website.
Huber Street School and Clarendon School will be serving a more traditional and expanded lunch menu. Please be reminded that students will need to input their Student ID number when purchasing items from the cafeteria (as no cash will be accepted.)
