Principal's Message
Dear MHES families and staff,
We are excited to welcome everyone back for another great week at Meadow Hall Elementary School! As we kick off the week, we are thrilled to invite you to join us for our Parent Coffee on Friday morning, January 31, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. During this time, we will be sharing valuable information about the CKLA curriculum and how it supports your child’s learning. We encourage all families to attend, as this is a wonderful opportunity to gain insights and connect with other parents in our community.
Additionally, I want to take a moment to address concerns regarding federal policies that could potentially impact our community. I want to assure all families that MCPS remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining safe, inclusive, and welcoming spaces for every student and family. Included in this week’s newsletter is a Principal’s Letter to the Meadow Hall Community, where I have outlined our ongoing efforts and dedication to supporting our entire community during these times of change. I encourage you to take a moment to read this letter and reach out if you have any questions or need assistance.
At Meadow Hall, we value the strength of our community, and we are committed to working together to ensure a safe and positive environment for all. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting your child’s education.
Please see the information below for the week of January 26, 2025.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Due to Weather Closures, MCPS School Year Extended by One Day
This January has been a challenging month for our community, with freezing temperatures, snow and icy conditions affecting our daily routines. Students, staff and families have navigated these tough weeks with resilience, being cautious while traveling and layering up against the cold. We can now look forward to a welcome warm-up in the coming days; however, MCPS has made a necessary adjustment to the school calendar due to the weather-related closures earlier this month.
Schools and offices were closed on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025, Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025, and Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025. The 2024–2025 MCPS school calendar includes 182 instructional days, two more than the state of Maryland's minimum requirement of 180. As a result, the closures on Jan. 6 and Jan. 7 will not affect the school calendar.
However, the closure on Jan. 8 requires using one designated make-up day in the calendar. The school year will be extended by one day, with the last day of school for students now scheduled as an early release day on Monday, June 16, 2025. Additionally, Friday, June 13, 2025, which was scheduled as an early release day, will now be a full instructional day for students. Please note the adjustments on your calendars as you continue to plan for the summer.
Should there be more closures, further calendar adjustments will need to be considered, MCPS may request a waiver from the state-mandated 180 instructional days from the Maryland State Department of Education. To qualify for a waiver, however, MCPS must demonstrate efforts to make up lost instructional time, including adjusting the existing school calendar.
During severe weather, closure decisions are made to maintain the safety of students and staff. Should our community receive any further weather-related closures, resulting in necessary calendar changes, those changes will be determined and communicated swiftly.
See the updated Traditional School Day calendar here. Arcola Elementary School, which follows an innovative calendar, does not change.

OTHER MCPS NEWS!
As a result of three weather-related emergency closures on Monday, Jan. 6, Tuesday, Jan. 7 and Wednesday, Jan. 8, MCPS has used the two contingency days built into the 2024-2025 school year calendar. An announcement about how the district will make up the third day will be shared with staff and families on Friday, Jan. 24.
Any further emergency closures will require the district to consider other make-up days that are identified in the school year calendar.
Thank You, MCPS Staff!
Hats off (well maybe not in this cold weather) to our terrific staff for their hard work this week! Dozens of employees from the Office of Facilities Management, the Division of Maintenance and Operations and the Department of Transportation worked tirelessly to remove ice and treat surfaces so MCPS buses could run and schools and offices could open safely for students, staff and visitors.
If you have ice remaining on sidewalks or roadways that you believe are causing a danger for students, staff or buses, please contact Montgomery County's 311 service to report those areas.

Changes to COSA Process Coming This Year
The MCPS 2025-2026 Change of School Assignment (COSA) transfer season opens on Monday, Feb. 3, and closes on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. The COSA process allows families to submit a request for their children to transfer out of their assigned home school.
Students are expected to attend the school within the established attendance area in which they reside (home school) or are assigned based on their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Learn more about the criteria.
Important changes for the upcoming COSA transfer process:
- Requests submitted after April 1, 2025, will not be considered unless there was a recent move or an emergency event that could not have been foreseen prior to April 1.
- All COSA requests must be submitted online through ParentVue in Synergy. Parents who need support on how to use ParentVue to complete an online COSA request are encouraged to reach out to a staff member at their child’s assigned school.
- Detailed information related to the COSA process can be found in the 2025-2026 COSA information booklet, which will be available at the end of January.
