3L Weekly News
Week Ending December 23, 2015
This week in...
Reading:
We wrapped up The Harvest Birds by completing a graphic organizer, Digging Deep, and completing an assessment.
We read a realistic fiction story titled Kamishibai Man written by Allen Say.
The story took place in Japan and was about a Kamishibai who told stories to children.
The book also discussed the effects the invention of television had on the Kamishibai’s job. During this story, we discussed the effects new inventions can have on peoples' lives.
We spent time reading a Japanese Folktale titled The Peach Boy this is one of the stories that the main character, Jiichan, read in the selection above. Students practiced visualizing the story and then illustrated what they visualized.
We will continue working with this story this coming week.
Math:
- We reviewed multiplication facts and the importance of fact power.
- We reviewed fact short cuts to help us remember the facts quicker.
- Students learned how to use the Multiplication/Division Chart to help find products to a multiplication problem.
- We played Multiplication Baseball. Information about this game can be found on the Everyday Math Website.
- Lastly, we completed stations wrapped up Unit 4 with an assessment.
- We will begin with Unit 3 tomorrow. This unit covers measurement.
Writing:
We celebrated our Narrative Writing with Mrs. Hampel's 2nd grade class.
We began our Informational Writing Unit and chose topics to write about. We created a table of contents and began to brainstorm what information would be placed in each chapter.
Over break the 3rd grade team and I spent time reflecting on each student's writing and have decided to revisit Informational Writing after the Persuasive Writing Unit which we will begin on Monday. We felt that the students needed more time researching their topics which will be done in school and at home. More information on researching at home will be coming in the next few weeks. Students will be encouraged to use Read to Self time in school to read their informational texts. Students may also continue to research at home either on websites (parent approved) or by reading.
Word Study
- The next Word Study Assessment will be on Friday, December 15th (Day 6).
Conferences:
- We hope you enjoyed our Student Led Conference presentations. I'm very proud of each student and how hard he/she worked to present! :-)
Grammar:
- We reviewed how to punctuate dialogue and identified the past, present, and future tense of verbs.
Cursive:
- We learned the letter p.
