Dear Cavalier Families,
I hope you all had a blessed Thanksgiving week break. Let's continue with an attitude of GRATITUDE every day.
As a reminder, it was recently decided by our Superintendent that for our 8th graders this year, they will have to pass all six (seven if students are taking Spanish) classes this semester and next semester in order to receive a promotion certificate and participate in the promotion ceremony. That is 12 credits. Beginning next school year, all students will be held to the 21 credits. A formal letter will be sent out by the district's Office of Curriculum and Instruction very soon. What does this mean? It means that between now and and the end of the semester, students must take advantage of all additional help (i.e. after school tutoring, Rise Up Fridays, Saturday Schools, etc.) to bring up their grades to pass their classes and earn a credit. If your student is receiving an "F" grade currently, please intervene now and reach out to teachers.
This week's announcements:
-
The SUHSD District Suicide Prevention Committee in partnership with the HERE Now Project will be providing education related to suicide prevention. The HERE Now Program team will be on our campus beginning Monday, November 27 in the 8th grade U.S. History classes. HERE Now uses Signs of Suicide, an evidenced-based suicide prevention program that educates students about warning signs of suicide and encourages students to seek help from a trusted adult . All 8th students will be receiving a 45 minute to an hour long presentation in their U.S. History Class. Please visit the following website to learn more about the curriculum, warning signs of depression and suicide, and available resources. https://sossignsofsuicide.org/parent/signs-suicide-program. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Assistant Principal kevin.willard@sweetwaterschools.org regarding any questions about the program.
There will be a School Site Council Meeting on Tuesday, November 28 at 3:30 pm. Here is the Agenda with the meeting link listed on it.
The counselors will be visiting the 8th grade Science classes on Wednesday and Thursday to review credit checks with students.
There is an evening Field Trip on Wednesday, November 29 to the San Diego Opera to watch the Spanish Opera "El Milagro del Recuerdo". Mr. McCray is organizing it for our students. Students should meet here at school by 5:15 pm. They should be back at 9:00 pm. Our very own, Mr. Viberos is singing in the opera!
Rise up Friday is with the Math Department this Friday. Please make sure that your students stay after school from 1:30 - 2:15 for this opportunity to have extra time with their math teachers.
Our Band students will be part of the Winter Band Concert at Chula Vista High School on Friday, December 1, at 6:30 pm. Tickets in the past have been $8.
There is Saturday School this Saturday from 8: 00 - 12:00 pm. Students must stay all four hours for credit. Please enter at the G street gate at 7:50 am. Make up an unexcused absence, tardies, or just show up to get help on work.
- Parents and Students, we are now accepting nominations for Teacher of the Year. Please fill out this form to nominate a teacher. Once a teacher accept the nomination, only teachers are allowed to vote for the 24-25 CVM Teacher of the Year.
- On Thursday, December 7, the McAlister Institute will have a presentation on "Nicotine and Vaping" for Parents at 1:30 pm in the library. Please come!
- Parents, please use great care when dropping off your student in the morning. There is a "No U-turn" sign in the drop-off lane, but unfortunately we observed many vehicles not following instructions and nearly hitting other vehicles. Please observe this rule to avoid an accident.
- Students, please complete this CORE survey if you haven't already. This is important data for us to collect on how you are feeling about your school experience so far. Log in to Illuminate, https://sweetwaterschools.illuminatehc.com/login and take the short SEL Survey questionnaire. It is available in English and Spanish.
Please feel free to contact myself or one of the Assistant Principals with any questions.
