A. MacArthur Barr Mission Statement
Preparing and inspiring students to apply learning in a changing, complex, and interdependent world.
Curriculum & Instruction
Making Connections
Fifth graders in ELA are gathered to listen to the grade-level read aloud, Out of My Mind, by Sharon Draper. As they make connections to their own lives and to the events in the book, they document their thinking on a classroom poster about the main character, Melody.
A Complete Team Experience
Our upcoming volleyball unit will give students a comprehensive look at what makes a successful team, from captains and coaches to statisticians and graphic designers. Students will participate in tryout-style lessons, create team names and logos, and compete in regular and postseason gameplay to crown a champion.
Project Based Learning
8th grade students in Mr. Emanuel’s music class practice recording their voices as they make radio commercials and jingles. They will use these recording skills throughout the quarter as they work together to write and record original songs.
Socratic Seminar
Mrs. Stefanoff and Mrs. Fay host a Socratic Seminar in ELA class based on the Novel, That Was Then, This Is Now, by S.E. Hinton.
Preparation Leading Up To The Winter Concerts
Dr. Skaba prepares students for the upcoming winter concerts to be held at the high school this and next week.
Extra Curriculars & Adventures at Barr
We Rise By Lifting Others
Unity Day seeks to signify our commitment to stamp out bullying. We asked all students and staff to wear orange because it sends a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying. At Barr we seek to empower those who are bullied, and everyone around them, to speak up and reach out with kindness, acceptance and inclusion. Students created a visual art installation that is displayed in the main staircase to remind students that at Barr all students should feel safe.
Huddle Up!
Students chose football for their recess tournament of the month.
Officer Culianos is Everywhere!
When Officer Culianos is not teaching DARE classes, he can be found walking around the building talking with students and faculty. In the picture below, we found him playing volleyball during indoor recess.

Inclusiveness in Every Way
In connection to the 5th grade novel study on Out of My Mind, by Sharon Draper, Maddy visited classes with her communication board. She taught her classmates about Apraxia and how a communication board is an important tool that supports her when she is expressing herself. Great job Maddy!
Congratulations To Barr's WordMasters
Advised by Ms. Langer, the fifth-grade WordMasters Challenge club has commenced the year with outstanding achievements! Colton Maki secured an impressive first-place finish with a score of 17 out of 20. Following closely was Jonah Rosenfeld, who delivered a phenomenal performance with a score of 16 out of 20. In an exciting turn of events, there was a four-way tie for third place, with each student scoring 15 out of 20: Alina Araujo, Robbie Kahl, Ethan Rosenfeld, and Elliot Stone. Considering that this was the first challenge, these results are particularly noteworthy.
In the sixth-grade WordMasters Challenge club, Sonya Cantor exhibited exceptional skill with a score of 19 out of 20. Lelani Ocampo followed closely with a commendable score of 17 out of 20, while Denisse Lema achieved a score of 16 out of 20. These accomplishments reflect the students' ability to retain and apply the knowledge they developed in last year's WordMasters Challenge Club, which is truly commendable.
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the first WordMasters Challenge meet of the 2024-2025 school year. They are eagerly looking forward to more opportunities to challenge themselves as the year progresses. I would also like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to you and the Board for your continued support of the WordMasters Challenge in Nanuet.
