Message from the Detroit Health Department
Greetings from the Detroit Health Department,
The communicable disease team would like to provide information and timely reminders regarding the mandatory reporting of all communicable diseases to the Detroit Health Department. It is of utmost importance that any instances of communicable diseases are reported promptly within a 24 hour-time frame upon notification. Your cooperation in adhering to this reporting requirement plays a pivotal role in maintaining the health and well- being of our community. It is critical that schools are reporting to the health department on a weekly basis regarding any illness to ensure we take necessary steps to prevent any cluster or outbreak and to avoid violations.
A centralized link for reporting all communicable diseases, including COVID-19, has been established by the Detroit Health Department for all schools and daycare centers in the City of Detroit. I've included the link below and recommend bookmarking for easy access. When a school is notified of a communicable disease within a staff or student you MUST report using ONLY this link. This form is to be filled out weekly, even if you have zero illnesses to report. Attached are informational guidance for influenza/norovirus, fact sheets and hand washing posters. Also attached is a list of the 2025 reportable conditions mandatory to be reported and the most recent up to date copy of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) document "Managing Communicable Diseases in Schools". Feel free to distribute these among staff, students and or parents.

Please note the Michigan Law requires schools and childcare centers to report specific diseases according to Act No. 368 of the Public Acts of 1978, which states that physicians, laboratories, primary and secondary schools, child daycares, and camps are required to report the occurrence or suspected occurrence of any disease, condition, or infections as identified in the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) CD rules to your LHD within 24-Hours. If there has been a change with the "point of contact" or the individual who reports to the health department within the last year, kindly respond to this email with the name, email and best phone number of the contact that will be regularly reporting so we can update our contacts list.
