Commit, Connect, Continue
Week of 9/16
Dear CST Family!
Big thank you to our Father's Club dads for welcoming our kids into school on Friday. Our kids enjoy this and it's wonderful having such a presence upon arrival. Please know all our dads are welcome anytime we have on of these events. Schedules are tricky so there's never an obligation.
This week will mark our first spirit week of the year (see theme days below). Students are encouraged to take part in the fun and we'll enjoy our first pep assembly of the year on Friday. It's going to be a lot of fun!
For our 8th graders, they have the first event to begin thinking about high school (really!). On Tuesday, 8th grade students will travel to JCCC for a career pathway fair. That same evening, there's an opportunity for parents to attend at JCCC as well. Be sure to follow our calendar and watch these newsletter for upcoming dates for 8th grade students/parents.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Important Message Regarding Noncredible Threats, 09.13.24
CST Parents,
Below was the email sent from Olathe Schools to families on Friday. Please read (if not already) and I encourage you to also visit with your child about the three numbered items below. As is so often the case, inaccurate information travels much quicker than the truth which does not help with emotions. I appreciate the conversations I was able to have with parents on Friday. As we were "business as usual" all day on Friday, there were certainly elevated emotions by some and I'm grateful for the love and care our counselors and staff provided to students who needed the support. Thank you, parents, for your continued partnership in your child's education at CST and never hesitate to reach out to us with concerns or questions.
Rick
---------------------------------------------------------
Olathe Public Schools families, students, and staff:
We wanted to follow up with our community after receiving several additional calls, emails and messages following the districtwide email sent out earlier this week about vague and/or noncredible threats circulating on social media in the Kansas City metro. Thank you to those who have reported threats. We want you to know that when threats of any kind are reported, our administrators work diligently alongside our district Safety Services team and the Olathe Police Department to immediately conduct a thorough investigation. We take every report seriously and will follow our protocol to ensure our buildings are safe.
At this time, we assure you we have investigated every report we have received and there is no credible threat to students, staff or our buildings in Olathe Public Schools.
In Olathe Public Schools, we believe we are stronger when we work together as a team – especially when it comes to the safety and security of our schools. Please follow the steps below to help keep students safe:
- Report Concerns Directly to the District/School/Police: Please report any threats toward Olathe Public Schools, your school, students or staff directly to your building administrator, your local police department, or on our tip line located on our district website and mobile app. Please include screenshots, names of the person who posted the threat and any other specific details.
- Do Not Share Posts on Social Media: Please do not post or repost threat information, either on social media (including Snapchat) or via text to anyone else. The more rumored threats spread, the longer it takes to investigate and the more confusion it causes for our families. We value our staff members’ and law enforcement’s time and resources, and we want to remove any barriers that would delay an efficient investigation.
- Talk to Your Student: Please review our Student Code of Conduct and have a conversation with your child about the seriousness with which we must take all matters related to threats. Even words or social media posts intended to be a joke can elicit safety concerns and serious disciplinary consequences.
If we all commit to following the actions above, our administrators, Safety Services team, and local law enforcement partners can efficiently and effectively respond with a full investigation, rather than managing confusion and chaos it can cause in our communities.
Safety is always our number one priority, and we will always respond swiftly to ensure our district is safe. Please visit www.olatheschools.org/safety to learn more about our district Safety Services team and our multi-tiered approach to safety protocols. We are committed to providing a safe learning environment for all our students and staff. Thank you for your continued support and trust in our schools.

Suicide Awareness Week
This week at CST we'll recognize National Suicide Prevention Week. Olathe schools are recognizing this week in different ways. At Chisholm Trail, our focus for the week will be The 4 C’s - Commit to yourself, Connect with people you trust, Continue to support, and Check-In”. During morning announcements, a daily topic will be read. Wednesday during lunch, we will have a large poster for students to write on if they wish. Our question will be “what do you like to do for self-care?” This is optional. Students do not have to participate if they don’t want to.
Below are the announcements to be read each day this week.
On Thursday, if students would like to support Suicide Prevention Week, you can by wearing teal and or purple to school.
Daily Announcements
Monday - This week is National Suicide Prevention Week. At Chisholm we are going to focus on The Four C’s - “Commit to self-care, Connect with people you trust, Continue to support, and Checking In.” During this week, CST will be promoting ways our students can help themselves, a friend, or family member who may be at risk.
Today we are going to focus on Committing to self-care. Middle school can be a fun and exciting time for students, but it can also be difficult and overwhelming. The practice of self-care can help manage stress, increase energy, and maybe even allow us to feel more like ourselves.
Self-care is not just a day of relaxing, it also looks like drinking water, exercising, engaging in a hobby, getting a good night’s sleep and much more. It’s something that we can practice weekly or even daily. This is an important reminder that as we get busier with school, make taking care of yourself a priority.
On Thursday, you are invited support this week's efforts by wearing purple and or teal.
Tuesday - Connect with people you trust.
Today’s focus is Connect with people you trust. That connection can be with friends, family or a trusted adult such as a teacher, school counselor, or coach. Having healthy connections in middle school is crucial for students’ well-being and academic success. As students navigate the challenges of middle school, having strong social relationships can provide a sense of belonging, support, and emotional stability. If you are having a difficult time, it is important to talk with the people you trust so that they can provide you support when you are struggling with your mental health.
On Thursday, you are invited support this week's efforts by wearing purple and or teal.
W - Continue to support
An easy way to continue to support your friends is to open yourself up to listening without judging. Remember you are giving them a safe space to talk about what’s going on and thanking them for being honest with you.
To support yourself, carve out a few minutes for reflection on your own day or week. Research shows this can help decrease stress.
On Thursday, you are invited to support this week's efforts by wearing purple and or teal.
Thursday - Checking In with others
Keep checking in on those around you. You never know who needs it. If you know someone who was going through a difficult time a week ago, a month ago, or even last year, chances are they may still be struggling. Check In. Ask how they are doing. Go over to hang out with them, and give them a chance to talk about how they are doing. Just showing that you care and taking the time to simply talk with a peer can make a huge positive difference in their life. It doesn’t have to be an awkward mental health deep dive conversation. Just check in with them and show them that you care.
F - Wrap Up
Life isn't a straight path. As you grow up, things are going to change and challenges will arise, and that's totally normal. It's important to be ready for these changes and see them as chances to learn and grow. Remember throughout the year to “Commit to self-care, Connect with people you trust, Continue to support, and Check-In with others.”

Intervention
Literacy Intervention at CST
CST Families,
As some of you may know, our district has adopted a reading intervention program called 95 Percent to address skills needed for reading fluency. Students are screened in the fall, winter, and spring.
At the beginning of the school year, we look at FastBridge data from this past spring as well as our fall screening data. Based on a student’s performance on one of these measures, they may be identified as a student who possibly needs further reading intervention. Our reading team will work with your student for further screening through our Cat time.
If our screening tools indicate that your student needs to participate in the 95 Percent program with our interventionists, you will hear from them when the time comes.
If you have any questions about our reading program, please feel free to contact me or CST building reading specialists, Mrs. Kimberlee Newman and Mrs. Kim Hoeven. Thank you so much for your time, and we look forward to working with your students!
On Behalf of the Reading Intervention Team,
Rick Sola
Principal
Math Intervention at CST
CST Families,
As you may know, our school has developed a numeracy intervention system to address skills needed for achievement in mathematics. All students are screened periodically throughout the year using standards-based screening measures based on upcoming grade-level content standards. Based on a student’s performance on these measures, they may be identified as a student who possibly needs further numeracy intervention to be successful with grade-level mathematics standards. Should your student be identified, they will work with one of our building’s math intervention teachers during Cat time in order to master identified numeracy skills.
If you have questions about our numeracy intervention system, please feel free to contact:

MS Attendance at High School Football Games
District Email from 9/6
September 6, 2024
Olathe Families,
We are excited to have your families come to support our high school activities and athletics. It is great to see the entire community at these events. It is imperative that our parent community partner with us as we work to encourage positive middle school behavior at high school games or events.
In Olathe we will require that all elementary and middle school students who attend our high school football games enter the game with an adult and sit with that adult throughout the game. Please do not drop your child off at a district complex without supervision as they will not be allowed to enter. It is challenging to monitor and keep all students safe without the help of our parent community.
Thanks for your help with this protocol to make district events a great experience for all who attend.
We hope to see your family cheering for our Olathe teams this school year.

- Dismissal: stay as close to the curb on either side as possible to open up the middle traffic lane
- Dismissal: students may cross to the second lane in front of the school, by the flag pole, only.

Personal Device Policy
Personal Device Policy
Parents were shared information about personal student devices at school (board policy can be found HERE).
We will review this policy with students as they return this week. Please help us by reminding (informing) students of this change ahead of time. This policy will be a slight shift from last year's practice.
- Personal devices are to be put away from bell to bell--8:20am-3:20pm
- Cell phones and ear buds will be turned into the office if out during the day. This includes passing periods and lunch.
- Headphones/earphones should be wired only
- Devices will be labeled and kept in the office until after school where students can pick it up.
- These procedures will be reviewed with students this week.
- Smart watches may be worn for time/step tracking purposes, but active use (i.e. like cell phone) will result in the watch being turned into the office.
- Collected devices will be kept in the office so it can be labeled and kept safe until return.
What do I do before school?
- Students arriving between 7:30-7:40 – both activity and front doors will be unlocked; remain in foyer
- Students arriving at 7:40—front doors and activity entrance—go to the gym, MPR, or library (7:45)
- Breakfast will be eaten in the MPR
- Students wanting to meet with a teacher between 7:40-8:10am should go to the office to get a pass.
- Students need to wait until the 8:10 “release bell” to go to their lockers or the locker room
- Students should not be in the hallways unless you have a pass/appointment with a teacher.
What do I do after school?
Bus riders – Gather belongings and head straight out to your bus (front of school)
Walkers/Bike riders/Skateboarders – walk bikes/carry skateboards while on school property both before and after school - 2 rack locations available - front by science doors and side by Events Entrance
If you are heading toward Ridgeview, you must walk on the sidewalk by the science doors toward 159th Street.
If you are heading toward Murlen, you need to walk on the sidewalk that heads toward Mur-len (by the football field) and then turn right and go to the light.
Students may not cross in front of cars at any time.
Parents may not park in the parking lot to drop off or pick up students
If your ride is in the outside lane for pickup, you may ONLY cross at the crosswalk in the front of CST

District Lunch Menus:
"8th hour?"
Many have asked questions about Academic Intervention, which is listed as 8th hour on your student’s schedule. This time (called Cat Time at CST) will actually occur right after 1st hour. During this time, students will be engaged in a variety of activities centering around literacy, numeracy, executive functioning skills, and social/emotional learning. All students will be working on the skills listed above during this time.
Similar to the past couple years, students will also be pulled for brief assessments to determine whether placement in one of the math or literacy intervention cycles would be appropriate.
As students will be working on the areas listed above, this is not a time for homework.
There will be time for students to get additional help, in the morning prior to the start of school and there are options a teacher may use during school day called "BASC" (Behavior and Academic Support Center) to have students make up a quiz or test. After school is also an option for students to touch base with their teacher.
What is CST ROCS???
Chisholm Trail launched its new PBIS program last school year. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports and ROCS is Respect, Ownership, Compassion, and Safety. These four core values are emphasized and taught to our students daily. The program is intentional about teaching students expected behavior. Tokens may be given out for exhibiting expected behavior and those can be used in a "store" to purchase items. These items may be tangible (candy, pop, books, etc.) or intangible (time in the gym, lunch in a special location, sit in the teacher's chair for the day, etc.). The tokens are what helps make ROCS fun, but the conversations this generates between students and staff are also part of what makes this such an impactful program. You will certainly see and hear more but ask your child about ROCS, what it stands for, and why we do it...they should know and may share about their own experience receiving a token or cashing it in!
Use the link in the section below if you'd like to contribute to our store. Thank you in advance for your consideration and support of this important program at CST!
CST ROCS store donations!
You can donate items for the ROCS (Respect, Ownership, Compassion, Safety) store through our Amazon Wish List and the items will be sent directly to CST.
https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/12SICJZV5MY4P?ref_=wl_share
Thank you to all who have helped us in the past. Our kids are LOVING it and we are so grateful for your support of our positive behavior program...CST does in fact ROC(K)!
NEW THIS YEAR – Personal Electronic Device Policy
In Olathe Public Schools, we are committed to having an environment in all schools that is conducive to learning – an environment free from unnecessary distractions and that promotes the responsible use of technology by all individuals. Personal electronic devices (i.e. cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, headphones, etc.) can hinder or disrupt student learning.
At the August 1, 2024 regular Board of Education meeting, the Board approved Policy JTC – Personal Electronic Devices, providing standard districtwide guidance around the use of personal electronic devices during the instructional day.
Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, early childhood through eighth grade students cannot use their personal electronic devices, including smartwatches, during the scheduled school day. To read the full policy, click here.
We recognize that in today’s digital world, personal electronic devices are a part of our everyday life, and as such, we want to be clear that while they are prohibited during the instructional day, students can have personal electronic devices in their backpacks or lockers and may use personal electronic devices during the scheduled school day in emergency situations, lockdowns, or if necessary for the student’s physical health.
If a parent or guardian needs to contact their student during the school day, please call the main office. Our phone number is 913-780-7240.

"DRESS CODE"
All students are to dress properly for attendance at school and at school functions. Coats and hats are to be left in students’ lockers. Students must wear shoes at all times. Costume-type dress is not permitted unless a special day has been designated. Students must have some part of their shirt/top which goes over the shoulders. Students who are not properly dressed or their dress is deemed disruptive to the educational process will be requested to correct their clothing. If they do not have a change of clothes, items will be provided through the nurse’s office.
These items are not considered appropriate for school:
- obscene or suggestive phrases or pictures on clothing;
- revealing or provocative clothing, including short shorts or tops which show bare midriffs or have plunging necklines. Shirt bottom should touch waist line of the pants.
- clothing which does not cover undergarments
- phrases or pictures on clothing which refer to alcohol, smoking, drugs, or provocative brands
- hats, stocking caps, sunglasses, hoods
- clothing deemed inappropriate by school administration, school staff, district staff, or clothing which is a threat to the order or safety of the school or students; clothing in violation of school board policy.
- At Chisholm Trail, the dress code is intended to ensure that students dress appropriately for the school setting. We ask students to remember that clothing for school and clothing for recreational activities may NOT be the same. School clothes need to reflect that the child is at school to attend to the business of learning. Specific guideline questions may be directed to the building administration.
All students will get a review of the district Student Code of Conduct which can be found HERE.
