Partner with us for healthy schools
In the last several weeks we have had several students coming to school with symptoms of respiratory and other illness. Because these illnesses spread quickly through the classroom, we are asking you to observe the following guidelines when deciding whether to send your child to school.
Please keep your child home if they have:
- A fever (>100.4 F) or chills. Your child should stay home for 24 hours after the fever is gone, without taking fever-reducing medication (ie.Tylenol/Advil);
- A cough, muscle or body aches, difficulty breathing, loss of taste or smell;
- Significant congestion or runny nose, sore throat, reddened eyes, green or yellow drainage from the nose;
- Fatigue or headache;
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea (24 hours free - before returning to school).
If your child has any of the above symptoms, please reach out to your health care provider. It is encouraged that those with symptoms be tested for COVID-19. If testing positive, please reach out to your school nurse/health room for further guidance.
One of the most effective ways to control the spread of illness in school is to keep your child home when symptoms first appear. Frequent hand washing, covering mouth/nose when coughing or sneezing, wearing masks, socially distancing, and receiving preventable vaccines, help prevent the spread of germs, viruses and illness.

Students to receive Panorama survey in spring
We will again be asking our 3rd through 12th grade students to participate in the Panorama survey for social-emotional learning. This survey was given to students last school year and in the fall 2022.
Panorama helps schools and districts transform their approach to education, so that every student thrives in school, every student benefits from an excellent education, and every student graduates prepared with the knowledge, skills, and mindsets they need to thrive in the modern, ever-changing world. Through our work to improve education, we help create a world where every child has equitable access to opportunities in school and in society more broadly. Panorama is a tool used by the district in conjunction with multiple other resources, such as attendance, behavior, grades, etc.
For elementary, the Panorama questions center on their current knowledge, how they feel about the school environment, and whether they have access to staff and resources to feel safe and successful. For secondary, the questions center on the same areas and further explore whether students feel they have the skills, opportunity, or ability for personal and academic growth along with social awareness and positive relationships. The survey window will be open during February. Survey results will be available in March after the survey window closes. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's principal.
Our goal as a district and community is to ensure that each student feels safe, welcomed, and supported in our schools and while attending school activities. The information provided through this survey is one tool we can use to hear student voice and perspective. Other considerations will continue to include conversations with students, families, and staff along with monitoring of academic progress and social-emotional awareness. It is ok to not feel ok, but please know that there is help and support so that it does not have to remain that way.
Click here for a link to more information about the Panorama survey.
Is your student too sick for school?
As a parent/guardian, you can help prevent the spread of illness by not sending a sick student to school. In determining whether to keep your student home, we encourage you to consider:
1) is your student rested and alert enough to learn, pay attention in class, and able to participate in all school activities, including
physical education;
2) is your student’s illness contagious to others? Please use the following guidelines:
APPEARANCE, BEHAVIOR – A student that is difficult to wake, unusually tired, pale, irritable and/or lacking in normal appetite should remain at home. These symptoms could indicate the onset of illness.
FEVER – A temperature of 100.4 F (38C) or higher suggests infectious illness. Your student must be fever free for 24 hours (without fever reducing medication) before returning to school. A fever is a symptom of COVID-19 and the student is required to stay home and should be tested. Please see the Washington State Department of Health “What to do if a Person is Symptomatic” flowchart for more information.
COLD SYMPTOMS OR COVID-19 SYMPTOMS: The symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, shortness of breath, body aches, new loss of taste or smell, cough (new, changes, or worsening), nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, congestion or sore throat. With any of these symptoms, individuals must stay home and should be tested for COVID-19. If testing positive, individuals must stay home for five days (first day of symptoms is day zero). If testing negative, Individuals can return if symptoms have significantly improved, and they are fever free for 24 hours without medication. Individuals who do not test for COVID-19 must stay home for the five days. If testing positive or not tested, individuals are additionally encouraged to wear a mask on days 6-10.
Please see the Washington State Department of Health “What to do if a Person is
Symptomatic” flowchart for more information.
For full COVID-19 guidelines while at school, please click here.
https://www.sno.wednet.edu/site/Default.aspx?PageID=5280
Please note: A severe sore throat or sore throat that is worsening or not improving could be strep throat even if there is no fever. Other symptoms of strep throat in students are headache and stomach upset. Keep your student home from school and have your student medically evaluated. If strep has been diagnosed, they may return to school as early as 24 hours after antibiotic treatment begins.
EYES – White or yellow drainage from the eye, altered vision, and/or redness of the eye lid or skin surrounding the eye requires medical evaluation and provider clearance for school return. Pink eye is highly contagious.
EAR INFECTIONS WITHOUT FEVER –Please have your student medically evaluated as repeated ear infections can cause permanent hearing loss. School exclusion is not necessary unless your student is uncomfortable.
DIARRHEA AND/OR VOMITING – Three or more watery stools in a 24 -hour period and two or more episodes of vomiting in the past 24 hours is reason to keep your student at home. Please keep your student home for 24 hours after the last episode (without medication). A single episode of diarrhea or even vomiting, unaccompanied by any other symptoms, may not be reason enough for the student to miss school – it is best to look at your student’s overall condition in determining if they are well enough to attend school. If you do decide to send your student, please be sure that you are available to pick your student up if their condition worsens.
RASH WITH FEVER OR BEHAVIOR CHANGE – This may indicate an infectious illness. Please have your student medically evaluated and keep your student at home until they have received provider clearance for school return.
CHICKEN POX – Your student may return to school when all blisters have formed scabs and there is no evidence of new blister formation. This may take five to seven days from onset of blisters.
OPEN WOUNDS – Open wounds must be kept covered with a dressing that is taped on all four sides. Any wound that appears to be infected should be evaluated by a medical professional.
