Community Check-In
North Rockland Central School District - May 10
Hello North Rockland Families:
This was a big week in North Rockland Schools. We honored the Top 5% of the Class of 2024, hosted the 2024 Mid-Hudson School Study Council, turned the High School Auditorium into a STEM lab from a future distant galaxy and planted community gardens to be harvested this fall.
As we look ahead to the remainder of the school year and beyond, I wanted to take a moment to address some exciting leadership changes within our school community. These promotions, effective July 1, 2024, include administrators at Central Office and West Haverstraw and Willow Grove Elementary Schools.
I am pleased to announce Amaris Scalia is the new Director of ELL and K-6 Services in the Administrative Office. Since 2005, she has been with the District in various positions, including an elementary teacher, curriculum specialist, assistant principal and Principal at West Haverstraw Elementary. Her vast instructional knowledge, strong work ethic and exceptional leadership skills have been instrumental in the academic success of our students. Amaris's promotion to Director is a testament to her outstanding contributions to our District.
Angelica Terry is the new Principal of West Haverstraw Elementary. She joined the North Rockland Central School District in 2003 and worked as a teacher and specialist at various schools before becoming a District-wide specialist. In 2018, she transitioned to administration and has been serving as the Assistant Principal at West Haverstraw Elementary ever since. Terry has a strong work ethic, remarkable collaboration skills and a sincere desire to assist students and families. She is a compassionate administrator who always prioritizes children's interests.
Lynn Rochford-Ayala will be the new Principal of Willow Grove Elementary. She is a sixteen-year veteran of teaching middle school math and served as assistant principal in Dobbs Ferry and Hawthorne Cedar Knolls before joining North Rockland in 2013. Lynn has been the Assistant Principal at Willow Grove Elementary for the last eleven years and is known for her leadership and organizational skills, professionalism and commitment to working with all stakeholders.
Colleen Pine has been promoted to Assistant Principal of Willow Grove Elementary. She started as an Elementary Teacher in Middletown and later taught at West Haverstraw Elementary before moving to her current position teaching fourth grade at Haverstraw Elementary. Throughout her time in North Rockland, Pine has displayed a high level of enthusiasm, a strong work ethic and a genuine love for working with children.
Karema Brown has been promoted to Assistant Principal of West Haverstraw Elementary. She started as an Elementary Teacher in NYC DOE for six years, then moved to North Rockland, where she served as an Elementary Teacher and an English Language Arts Coach at Haverstraw Elementary. Brown has demonstrated a strong curriculum background and instructional leadership skills.
Please join me in extending a warm welcome as these dynamic leaders assume their new responsibilities and tackle the challenges of their new roles. The key administrative changes reflect NRCSD's deep educational expertise, proven strategic thinking, strong execution and a dedicated commitment to our students and families.
The foundation for our continued success is built upon our core values to serve the overarching needs of the North Rockland community.
NR presented a final budget on May 7 we are very proud of and that will continue to support our students while moving the District forward. You are reminded that the community can have their voices heard on Tuesday, May 21 regarding the District Budget, Proposition 2 (which allows the District to use previously saved money to make capital improvements at no additional cost to the taxpayer) and the Board of Education candidates.
We encourage everyone to vote!

Superintendent of Schools
Teacher Appreciation Week
What have you accomplished because of a teacher?
NRHS students and the NRTA helped us put together this video to show our appreciation for the outstanding educators across NRCSD and as a tribute to ALL educators making a difference. Thank you for what you do.
It's clear teachers' roles extend far beyond the confines of the classroom. Hearing from learners how that push in the right direction, noticed potential, igniting the spark and caring support changed their lives, says so much about educators' lasting impact.

From big games to graduation ceremonies, Cordisco Stadium is a flexible place for students, families and community gatherings. Phase I of the major upgrades to NRHS is building pride through a robust, attractive facility design at no additional cost to the taxpayers while receiving state aid returns of approximately 75-80%.
“The North Rockland Sports Complex’s new weight room, eight-lane track, turf field and press box will usher in a new period of enhanced performance for our athletes and community. “ Masiello, who was first elected to the North Rockland Board in 2007 explained. In addition to serving on our Board of Education, he previously worked for 35 years at Helen Hayes as a designer for rehabilitation and research departments. Robert has a passion for all things engineering and has been a longtime advocate of this revitalization.
FMS Auditorium Work with Vice President Ida Maninne.
Implementing energy-saving measures, AV equipment and upgrading auditorium technology will not only reduce energy costs and environmental impact but create a more comfortable, functional and sustainable space for students, faculty and visitors to enjoy. Lighting, controls, sensors and sound components are part of the upgrades to FMS at no additional cost to the taxpayers while receiving state aid returns of approximately 75-80%.
"Fieldstone Middle School is a jewel of North Rockland Schools and the Auditorium is at the heart of the building." Maninne, who first elected to the North Rockland Board in 2018 explained. "Fieldstone’s Auditorium is a storytelling space hosting everything from music, drama and assemblies to guest speakers, celebrations and public meetings." Points of Pride
School Nurses
This week was National School Nurses Day! To mark the occasion North Rockland recognized our incredible nursing team as our May Points of Pride recipients. NR Together, we celebrated the power of School Nurses district-wide and all the invaluable contributions they make to students' health, safety and success.
Every day our School Nurses show us the “power of care.” By providing education, support and resources, they equip K-12 students and their families with the important knowledge and skills needed to make healthy choices, informed decisions and navigate the healthcare system effectively.
It’s clear, North Rockland’s Nurses are much more than healthcare professionals. From administering first aid and managing chronic conditions to promoting healthy habits, coordinating care, offering emotional support or being a confidant, school nurses play a big part in students' overall well-being.
Although there seem to be endless reasons to take a trip to the nurse's office, like when you’re not feeling your best, when you’re unsure, when you need help, screening services, physicals and immunizations --- it’s the trips students take to share they made the grade, landed the part in the play, mustered up the courage to try out for the team or made a positive change that really reveals the role these caring individuals play.
Our district's school nurses are heroes to the children they serve. Please help us thank them here!
