On the move with Coach Horn and Coach Schuette
Happy Spring Break and NCAA basketball month! We have just finished up soccer and basketball skills. In March we will be starting a hockey unit and hopefully be able to get outside for some outdoor games. We will also be focusing on the amount of daily activity that our bodies need. Students will continue working hard on our flexibility and muscular strength in order to raise our physical fitness scores. Lastly, we will be reviewing the bones and muscles for each grade as well. Be sure to stay active and stay safe during spring break! Keep Moving!
SHOES: Please have your student wear tennis shoes on their PE days, or have a set of them stored in the classroom. We are still seeing a lot of crocs and boots. Thanks so much!

From the Counselors
The goal of student placement is to design balanced classes, according to established criteria, which create the optimal learning environment for all Maize Elementary School students. Each classroom is a small community that must be representative of the diverse social, academic, and physical needs and abilities of all students. If you have any concerns about your child’s class placement for next year, please visit with the counselors, Becky Stephens or Andrea Nietfeld—you can call us at 722-8230 or email at bstephens@usd266.com or anietfeld@usd266.com. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We start working on class placements this month.
Our lessons this month are about working together and showing cooperation.
In April our 3rd and 4th graders will be taking the state assessments. Please see the schedule below and have your child here each day so they can take the assessments with their class.
3rd grade testing dates: April 9-12
4th grade testing dates: April 2-3 and April 11-12
Have a great Spring Break!

HEALTH REMINDER…
Please remind your children to practice good handwashing, proper covering of their coughing/sneezing, and help them by getting their vaccinations to keep them healthy for school. Please keep your children home if they are exhibiting any of the following symptoms: fever over 100 degrees, headache, general aches and pains, fatigue and weakness, continuous coughing, chest discomfort, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. Fever MUST be gone without the use of a fever reducing medication (i.e. Tylenol(Acetaminophen) or Motrin (Ibuprofen)) for a full 24 hours before student is to return to school. Just a reminder that we do not have a supply of Tylenol or Ibuprofen here at school. We can only give medications that parents have supplied along with a signed document.
GIVING YOUR CHILD MEDICATION AT SCHOOL:
Complete a request—Administration of Medication form
The medication MUST be in the original container.
The medication must be current. Expired medication will not be administered.
The medication must be age appropriate. Any medication for a person older than the child will
require a signed form from the child’s physician.
All prescription medications MUST have the pharmacy label with the student’s name on the
bottle/box.
Students MAY NOT self-administer medications in the elementary schools.
Music Notes
Hello from Mr. Jeffries and Mrs. Todd!
3rd and 4th grade have been working on note reading through out recorder unit. They have really impressed us with their playing! The recorders we use at school will stay at school and be washed and put away for next year when we finish our unit at spring break. If your child would like to continue working on their skills at home let us know and we can share some great recorder resources for you!
SAVE THE DATE!
1st and 2nd grade are starting work on their music program songs. The performance will be May 2, 2024. 1st Grade will perform at 6:00 and 2nd grade will be at 6:45 at the Maize Performing Arts and Aquatic Center. Detailed information will be sent home after spring break. The theme of the performance is "Feelings!"
Kindergarten has been getting into the music by using their imaginations! I'm so proud of their creativity and listening skills. They have grown so much! We have been having a lot of fun moving to the music of Ella Jenkins, Jim Gill, Laurie Berkner, and Caspar Babypants. Give these artists a listen next time you need a dance party at home or in the car!

Hearts Around the World
Our second grade classes participated in “Hearts Around the United States” this year.
Our goal was to get a valentine, special item, or postcard from each of the 50 states. We have a map of the United States and of the world, and as we received a valentine we placed a heart on our classroom map from the state or country of which it was sent.
We have received over 200 Valentine cards from all 50 states and 15 countries. Thank you to the MES community for sharing and helping us reach our goal.

Order your Yearbook by March 19th!

Attendance is Important
After seven absences, professional documentation will be required for an absence to be excused. With this change, the district encourages parents to obtain a note from a medical provider when appropriate. You can fax (722-5456), e mail or bring the forms into the office. Absences will not be changed after 3 business days. Find a complete definition of an excused absence in the District Student Handbook. This is important because Kansas Law requires the school district to report truancy after unexcused absences accumulate (three in a row, five in a semester, or seven in a school year). For more information on truancy, please see the Compulsory Attendance Law (K.S.A. 72-3120).
If you know of an extended absence ahead of time you will need to fill out the Administrative Excusal form prior to the absence.
