Reminder - PSAT/SAT testing this week
Tomorrow, April 16, grade 10 students will take the PSAT 10 and grade 11 students will take the SAT tests. A grab and go lunch will be available, as will buses after the testing period. All other students will not have school tomorrow.

Students and staff honored in 36th Annual William H. Fern Awards
The 36th Fern Award Ceremony will recognize students for academic and extracurricular accomplishments and staff members for their service on Thursday, May 2. The Fern awards are one of the most prestigious honors a junior student can receive. The event will begin at 3:00 p.m. in the East Leyden student cafeteria.

Talented students display creativity at the Leyden Spring Art Show
The Leyden Spring Art Show begins Monday, April 22, with a special Artists’ Reception from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Then, student art will be on display in the libraries at both East and West Leyden from April 22 - 25, during the school day. This year’s show will feature drawings, paintings, photography, ceramics, graphic design, video and motion graphics from Leyden students and additional artwork from our partner middle schools.
National report shows where Leyden graduates attend college
East Leyden’s graduating class of 2023 included 392 students and West Leyden’s graduating class was 335. For both schools, Triton College was the most popular post-secondary institution, with 34 percent of East and West students attending. For East and West, 23 percent of students enrolled in four-year colleges. Some of the most popular institutions where Leyden graduates enrolled include University of Illinois Chicago, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Elmhurst University and Dominican University.
Overall, approximately 60 percent of East students and 61 percent of West students attended college after graduating from Leyden. Students who didn’t attend college immediately, started careers, joined the military, or pursued other opportunities.

All students/families are required to complete enrollment process
Enrollment for the 2024-25 school year is open and required for every student planning to attend East or West Leyden. Parents/Guardians have received a special access code (snapcode) by email and U.S. mail to use in Home Access Center (HAC) to begin the enrollment process. Upon completion of the enrollment process in HAC, an invoice will be generated and school fees can be paid online (through MySchoolBucks).
All incoming freshmen, transfer students, and others who have been asked to submit proof of residency may do so electronically and are required to complete this process prior to enrolling.

6th Annual Leyden Parent University
Leyden Parent University will take place on Saturday, April 20, from 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. for all Leyden parents and guardians of students in grades 8 - 11. This event is being held at East Leyden and check in will begin at 8:25 a.m. This event is for parents and guardians only, from both East and West, and we kindly ask that children not be in attendance. Lunch will be provided. Space is limited, registration is recommended.
Leyden Parent University’s purpose is to support parents in learning how to help their child find success during and after high school. Parent involvement in their child’s education leads to better student motivation, behavior, grades and future success.
Each year two scholarships are awarded to parents in attendance. This scholarship is applied to their child’s postsecondary plan upon graduation.

Leyden announces Student Summit, a two-day event for 3rd-8th graders
Registration is now open for the 9th Annual Leyden Student Summit, a 2-day event for incoming 3rd-8th graders. Participants rotate to different workshops and get hands-on experience in art, theater, coding, robotics, digital electronics, culinary arts and more fun activities. Breakout sessions are led by Leyden teachers and students who are experts in their designated area. Spots are limited and this event will sell out, so please register today!

Leyden’s award-winning, bilingual, Teatro Leyden, celebrates 10 years
Leyden’s award-winning, bilingual theatre program, Teatro Leyden, celebrates its anniversary by staging the show that launched the program 10 years ago, La Gringa, on April 25-27, in the West Leyden auditorium.

Leyden students visit Barcelona as part of student exchange program
In its inaugural Barcelona Homestay Exchange Program, 16 Leyden students spent spring break in Begues, Spain, visiting with the very same students who came here this past November. Our Leyden students experienced school, family life and Spanish culture all while sampling new food, learning new customs and cultures and visited some of the biggest tour sites in the city.
Two West Leyden students awarded scholarships
Hugo Lechuga and Kayla Gorski won Chick Evans Scholarships, a full tuition and housing college scholarship for high-achieving golf caddies. Hugo will be studying Political Science at the University of Illinois Urbana - Champaign and Kayla will be attending the University of Iowa, studying Nursing.
Operation Snowball raising money for childhood cancer
East Leyden Operation Snowball started a campaign "Change for Change," which raised more than $1,800 for St. Baldrick’s, an organization that helps fund the fight against childhood cancer. This initiative began as a way to support Stephen Foltin, the son of Literacy/Special Education Teacher Jen Black-Foltin, and his team the “Foltin Fighters,” as they fundraising for childhood cancer research. The “Foltin Fighters” raised more than $20,000, with Leyden teacher Scott Leu and Operation Snowball member Dominic Ganir shaving their heads in support.
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) go to Springfield
East Leyden Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) attended the 2024 Illinois FBLA State Leadership Conference in Springfield on April 6, where four students qualified for the national competition including Ryan Fuentes, Monica Krol, Marina Stoyanova, and Mariya Todorov
