News from the Guidance Office
Attention Sophomores:
The Sophomore Class Counselors will host a Parent/Student Information Session on Wednesday evening, January 31, 2018, at 7pm in the CBW Auditorium. Topics to be discussed will include a brief review of PSAT results, Career Plan/Naviance, and the main topic, Program Planning. Students and parents are encouraged to attend.
Program Planning
Tenth and Eleventh Grade Counselors will visit all 2nd semester English classes on Thursday and Friday, February 1st and 2nd, to review course selection and the procedure for entering courses into the portal. The Student Portal for Course Registration will close Sunday, February 4th at 11pm (so all students are asked to enter their course requests before sitting down to watch the Superbowl!).
We realize this is a short window for students (due to calendar changes caused by weather); however, counselors will review all necessary information in English classes, and students can refer to the Program Planning page of the Guidance Website for all information, links, and dates. In addition, during the month of February, counselors will meet individually with students to review course selections, answer questions, and make any necessary changes to those requests. The Program Planning process continues through mid-March, so there will be ample time to make sure that all students have made the appropriate course requests!
AP Exam Registration
Advanced Placement (AP) exams will be given at CB West in May (7th through the 18th). Registration for AP exams will open in My Payments Plus beginning on Monday, February 12th. All students enrolled in an AP class this year will receive detailed information about AP exam registration, as well as a bulletin from College Board, through Advisory during the first week of February. For more information about AP Exams, Registration, and important dates and links, please visit the AP Testing page of the Guidance Website.
ASVAB Exam
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) will be administered at CB West on Monday, February 26, 2018. The ASVAB is a timed, multi-aptitude test which covers four areas – Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Mathematics Knowledge. Students who are considering a career in the military should consider taking this test, as it is used to determine qualification for enlistment in the military. It can also be used to assess vocational strengths and interest areas. Please see your counselor for more information, or to register for this exam on 2/26/18.
Peer Tutoring for West students:
The West Tutoring Academy is available to assist students who need extra help. Peer tutoring is available every Tuesday from 2:30pm to 3:30pm in the school library. During these times, any student who needs assistance with any course can come to the library and meet with a peer tutor. Students must arrive at 2:30pm, but can leave whenever they are finished with their work. If you have questions about this program, please call the Guidance Office at 267-893-2512.
PreACT
The PreACT will be offered at CB West High School on Saturday, March 17, 2018. This exam is recommended for all college-bound 10th grade students as practice for the ACT. Similar to taking the PSAT as preparation for the SAT, the PreACT provides students with the opportunity to prepare for the ACT by getting exposure to test questions like those on the official ACT. Check your email for an eBlast containing registration details, or visit the testing page on the guidance/West website.Revised 2nd Marking Period
Due to the recent school day cancellations, the decision has been made to extend the 2nd marking period by two days for secondary students. Therefore, the end of the 2nd marking period will now be Tuesday, January 30th.
2nd marking period grades will be available via the Parent Portal on February 9th at 8:00 AM.
Thank you for your flexibility and understanding.
Back to School Night
ePrep
The Central Bucks School District offers a standardized testing prep system, ePrep, to all its students. This free web-based program helps students prepare for the PSAT, SAT and ACT. There are practice tests, test-taking tips, and instructional videos that explain how to do the problem(s) that may have been answered incorrectly during the practice session. The link is http://www.eprep.com.
All CB West sophomores have been registered with accounts. They should log in with their CBSD student email and the password eprep2017. Juniors and seniors, who are interested in accessing ePrep but do not have an account, should contact Ms. Graney in the CB West Library for an account.
Attention all Juniors and Sophomores!
PA mandate requires that every 11th grade student provide a copy of a physical, completed by a physician, to the School Nurse. The physical can be dated anytime from the first day of 10th grade through 11th grade. Please send in a copy of a physical as it is available. You can find an official form here: PHYSICAL FORM
Collection Drive
CBW Stars & Stripes Club will be running a collection drive to support the 6000+ crew members aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, including 2008 CBW alum, Lt. C.J. Davies. The collection will run from Wednesday, January 31st through Friday, February 9th. We will be collecting Toiletry items, Entertainment items, and Food/Snack items through Advisories, and collection bins will be placed in the lobby. Suggested items are listed on the Stars and Stripes Webpage. These items will be packed into individual care-package boxes, and each box will contain letters of support written by students.
If you’d like to support this drive, please send the requested items in with your student, or drop off items into the collection bins in the lobby. You may also make a donation to support shipping costs ($17 per care package). Any donations should be sent to the attention of Lisa Corr in Guidance (cash or check - payable to CB West Student Activities Fund). Thank you for your support of C.J.
