BELIEVEđź’™
I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit Grandma on the day my big sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus." "Ridiculous!" she snorted. "That rumor has been going around for years, put on your coat, & let's go." As we walked through the doors of the store with everything, Grandma handed me $10. "Take this money," she said, "& buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car." For a few moments I just stood there, wondering what to buy, & who on earth to buy it for. I finally settled on a red corduroy coat. I put the coat & my $10 on the counter. The clerk looked at the coat, the money, & me. "Is this a Christmas present for someone?" she asked kindly. "Yes," I replied shyly. "It's ... for Bobbie. He's in my class, & he doesn't have a coat." The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag & wished me a Merry Christmas. Grandma helped me wrap the coat, & drove me over to Bobbie's house, explaining as we went that I was now & forever officially one of Santa's helpers. I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his doorbell twice & flew back to the safety of the bushes & Grandma. Forty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside my grandma, in the bushesđź’™. That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were: Ridiculous! Santa was alive & well ... AND WE WERE ON HIS TEAM!
