National Mental Health Awareness Month
What is Mental Health?
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. A person's mental health is just as important as their physical health.
Practicing Self-Care
For some people self care could include:
- Meditating
- Attending regular social events
- Exercising
- Keeping a regular sleep schedule
- Journaling
- Taking a bubble bath
- Making art
- Practice mindfulness
- Going for a hike or spending time outdoors
- Reading
- Taking some time alone
- Take a social media break
- Working on a hobby
Spreading Awareness and Support
Raising awareness about mental health reduces the stigma and discrimination often experienced by people who struggle with their mental health. Stigma is negative ideas surrounding a topic or state of being. By raising awareness and reducing the negative ideas around needing help with our mental health, it makes it easier to ask for help when we need it. Raising awareness can also help to create an environment of acceptance for those who may need more assistance or attention paid to their emotional needs.
Some ways to help spread awareness include:
- Lighting up your social media or business with green to symbolize mental health
- Talking about mental health conditions, emotions, stress, self care, etc with your community
- Sharing your own experiences or knowledge about mental health
