Virtual Registration and Orientation - Students Choose Electives by May 18th
Good afternoon, Jefferson Middle School Parents!
Because of the current school closure situation, we have unfortunately had to cancel our Spring Orientation events that occur each year in our building. Yet, we realize that parents and students receive so much information about Jefferson Middle School at this event that we had to find a way to create a digital version to provide as much information as we could.
Our staff has worked hard to provide our parents and students with a virtual Orientation/Open House experience! In addition, we have included the Course Curriculum/Registration Pages so you can move forward in preparing for the 2020-21 school year. All rising 6th-8th graders must complete their elective choices in skyward by May 18th.
The information is listed by grade level below for your convenience. Students can see these files in the JMS School Counseling Canvas course, under Modules. All information will be provided in this Sunday’s Parent Newsletter and is also housed on our website. You can simply click on this link to see our Spring 2020-2021 Digital Open House Orientation AND Course Curriculum and Registration pages!

Finishing Remote Learning Strong
Step # 1 - Get a routine in place
It can be very helpful to map out your day and create a routine. When we are in school you have a routine and a schedule. You know when you need to wake up and you understand that third period is from 9:35 - 10:25 etc. It's important to create a routine. You need to make sure to have a routine that mirrors school hours because those will be the office hours your teachers will be available to help.
Step # 2 - Check Canvas Announcements Daily
During this time of remote learning our teachers will post daily lessons to their Canvas pages in the Announcement section. Students will be able to see their daily assignments in this section along with any helpful resources for the lessons. Please check Canvas Announcements daily for the lessons in your students classes.
Step # 3 - Build a Schedule with your Teachers Remote Office Hours
Your teachers will post information about their "remote office hours" in Canvas Announcements. A great strategy would be to build your time on Canvas around those remote office hours. Think about a schedule like this:
If your ELA teacher has office hours from 9 am - 12 pm, Math has hours from 11 am - 2 pm, SS has hours from 8 am - 11 am , and Science has hours from 10 am - 1 pm. This allows you to work to set up time to work on those classes during those office hours. You may not have questions for ELA, but you may have a question for SS so it would be important to work on SS during that window 8 am - 11 am. Think about the hours your teachers are offering in order to set up a schedule that gives you the best opportunity to complete your work.
Step # 4 - Reach out to your teachers if you have questions
Your teachers will have office hours where they will be available to assist and answer questions etc. If you don't understand an assignment reach out to your teachers. You can message them in Canvas or send them an email in outlook. Keep in mind, that you may not be the only student messaging a teacher, so do not expect an instant answer. This is new for you as students and this is new for us as teachers. Once you send them a question, just wait. They will respond to you and work to help you. If you contact a teacher outside of office hours, they may not see it until later in the day or until the next day.
Step # 5 - Give it your best! Learning Opportunities are critical for you
Keep this in mind these opportunities about education is about you! We want you to take advantage of these opportunities to help improve yourself. So if you choose not to do an assignment, to not even give your best effort, then you are choosing not to provide yourself with a chance to better you and in Phase 2 to better your grade. Think about it for a moment, you can check your grade in Skyward in the FIN column and if you complete all of the tasks to the satisfaction of your teacher, you can earn up to an additional 9 percentage points. Imagine taking a 78% to an 87% or a 87% to a 96%. This is a critical time for you to work, learn, and grow to show your skills and continue to have a growth mindset.

Phase 2 for Remote Learning:
We want to thank you for all of your efforts during Phase 1 of remote learning. It has been amazing to see the innovative ideas, lessons, resources and challenges that our students have completed during this time. As you know from Dr. Borchers district-wide message, due to the recommendation of Governor Lee we would remain closed for the remainder of the school year.
We want to keep our students engaged and involved in the learning process and also offer opportunities for them to help their grade. While our buildings are closed as a result of COVID-19, we want to continue to support quality learning opportunities for student success. To do this, Oak Ridge Schools began the next phase of learning online on April 27. Please read the information below to get a better understanding of how Phase 2 will work:
- We want to encourage ALL students to remain engaged during Phase 2. This is an opportunity to continue to learn and grow while earning points to help your grade. As outlined below, students grades can't be lowered, but you can improve up to 9 percentage points over the three week Phase Two to improve your grade.
- Final grades will be calculated from terms 1-3. You can see students final grades in Skyward under FIN. Reflected in picture above in the top right corner.
- It's about learning, it's about engagement and it's about your own personal growth. If you have great grades, keep going! Use this time to sharpen your skills, strengthen your knowledge and increase your skills. This phase is about improving and continuing to develop your skills.
- All students will have opportunities to improve final grades with required assignments.
- Final grades for 5th-8th grade students will be calculated for terms 1-3 through the final date March 13. No grades can be lowered.
-All students may submit new assignments to improve final grade. Students may earn 3 additional percentage points (added to the final grade) each week, during the weeks listed below:
Week #1 April 27-1
Week #2 May 4-8
Week #3 May 11-15
- Students and parents can check teacher Canvas announcements to learn the requirements for assignments to help improve their grade each week.
Student Locker Content Retrieval - Save The Date for Week of May 18 - 22
During the week of May 18th - 22nd we will begin our collection of student devices and also distribution of student locker materials. The details of this plan are above in this newsletter.
At this time, we are planning to have drop off of devices, student textbooks, instruments etc. and also have students have their personal belongings from lockers etc. distributed back to them during the week of May 18th - 22nd. Details of this plan can be found above in this newsletter.
Student Internet Access Availability

Canvas a great tool for now and going into 20-21 school year
During this time of remote learning our teachers will post daily lessons to their Canvas pages in the Announcement section. Students will be able to see their daily assignments in this section along with any helpful resources for the lessons. Please check Canvas Announcements daily for the lessons in your students classes.
Our students are very familiar with using Canvas and know how to go about checking announcements for information. This will be the starting point for students and where to access information for the lessons being designed by teachers. Above is a video on how to use Canvas for parents. Please take a moment to watch and get a better feel for how Canvas is used by our teachers. Information about extended learning opportunities will be found in the Announcements section in Canvas.
Promoting a Growth Mindset
- Remember that Phase 2 is a chance to improve your grade by up to 3% percentage points weekly. If you didn't complete any assignments in week one you still have a chance to earn up to 6% percentage points.
- It's about staying engaged in the learning process. We want as many students as possible to continue to learn and grow during Remote Learning. That's why our teachers are working hard to make engaging lessons, projects, and opportunities for student learning and growth. Take advantage of these opportunities and continue to work to learn and grow during this time.
- Learning is a process. Think about that for a moment, have you ever wanted to excel at something? You probably spent time practicing that skill again and again and again. The learning process should not be any different. Take this time to promote a growth mindset for yourself and continue to gain as much knowledge as you possibly can.
- You are capable of attaining knowledge and skill. The belief that you can improve, grow and gain skills is the founding principle behind growth mindset. Challenge yourself to continue to learn and grow during this period. You have two weeks to give your best efforts and stay engaged in the learning process.
- Staying connected is a great way to challenge yourself. In this uncertain time, it can be easy to get off routine, lose connection etc. but if you dedicate time each day to improving your academic skills you can stay connected with your teachers, classmates and the skills you will need when we return to school.
- This time period is all about improvement for you. Your grades can only go up, you can pick up skills and knowledge from previously taught lessons that maybe you didn't understand. You have time and resources to continue to keep your brain growing and sharp. Set some goals for the next ten days and give it your best effort to improve.
First Floor Lobby Transformation
We will be working over the summer months to equip this new area with 21st century furniture and resources as it will be unveiled to serve as space for innovation, creativity, and learning for the 2020-2021 school year. We are excited to have begun work on this new resource designed to support our students and staff. Also, this will provide more seating and area for students during am lobby hours prior to the start of first period. We will keep you posted on the progress in the coming weeks. The removal of these lockers downstairs also coincides with the installation of new lockers in the building. These lockers have been replaced and 7th and 8th students will be receiving new lockers, set to be installed later this summer.
Special thanks to Mr. Randolph and his crew along with several school district building and maintenance crew members for their efforts to so effectively and efficiently work on this project this week. They were amazing at removing the lockers, concrete and getting the sites prepped for installation of new lockers in 7th grade and 8th grade along with getting the lobby space ready for the learning lab.

Counselors Corner
Good Evening from Mr. Magee and Mrs. Castle! We hope that you have worked really hard this week to earn extra points to raise your grades. We also hope that you have had the wonderful opportunity to watch our videos on the JMS webpage and picked your electives for the upcoming school year. If you haven’t then you have until May 18th to do so. This week we would like to focus on how we need to finish this school year strong and earn the most points to end with the best grades possible. Here are some tips that Miracle Math Coaching provides to help students finish the school year in a successful manner:
Tip #1 Ensure Optimal Organization
As the school year draws to a close, many students sway away from using their academic planners, folders, and other organizational products.
To boost their success in school, you should place a renewed interest in organization.
This will help to prevent forgetting about assignments, losing assignments, and overlooking their academic responsibilities.
Tip #2 Have a High Level of Accountability
It is common for students to overlook their school-related responsibilities towards the end of the school year. Procrastination is the one issue that will result in less-than-favorable results in assignments
Hold your child to a high level of accountability regarding procrastination.
Make certain that they complete all homework assignments, continue to study hard, and are doing well in their daily assignments while at home.
Tip #3 Boost Motivation
If you observe your child performing well, staying organized, studying, and doing all that they are responsible for, reward them. This will help to naturally boost their motivation levels.
In the same respect, if you see them slacking off, you should make certain that there are penalties in place for less-than-favorable performances that are within their abilities. This, too, will help ensure consistent motivation for the remainder of the school year.
Tip #4 Set Goals
To keep motivation high and to end the school year out strong, it is imperative that you work with your child in order to set goals especially being quarantined in our homes.
The goals should include both personal goals and academic goals. Examples could be to achieve a certain score on a particular project, to obtain certain averages or to obtain a comprehensive understanding of a certain skill or subject presented online.
Tip # 5 Stay on a Schedule
As summer draws closer and days get longer, it is common for kids to get a bit off of their normal schedule especially where we have all been on our own schedule during this COVID-19 pandemic. I am sure many of us have been going to bed at a later time, eating a little more, and getting up a little later.
In order to end the school year with a bang, it is imperative that you stay on schedule, ensure that your child eats healthy, and that they are getting plenty of sleep.
These measures will help them to stay alert, on task, and achieve success during their online school day.
Tip #6 Have Fun!
By now, it has been a long school year with everything that we all have dealt with in the last few months. Yes, you have to make sure that your child stays on task; however, it is acceptable to allow them to have a little fun.
This will allow your child to experience some mental refreshment. Have them engage in some activities that have been provided on the 5-8 School Counseling Canvas page.
When studying and doing homework assignments, be sure to encourage your child to take frequent breaks. We all need to relax and unwind.
Tip #7 Start a Countdown
You should encourage your child to place a focus on the “finish line”; which is May 15th.
Start an exciting countdown with your child.
Mark off goals as they get finished and mark off the days as they pass. Schedule something exciting for the end of the school year. This will motivate your child to work towards that activity or event.
We hope that you and your student finish this Phase 2 remote learning opportunity on a positive note and look back and reflect as to what were the positives that come out this experience and what are the areas that could have been better and how can you improve them.
