October 2024
A great start at the GREAT NORTHERN!
As we wrap up our first month of school, it’s hard to believe how much we’ve already accomplished! September was filled with excitement as students settled into their classrooms, formed new friendships, and dove into learning with enthusiasm. We celebrated wonderful moments together, from our fun Family Fun Night at United Skates to a great turnout at our first PTO Restaurant Night at Angelo’s Pizza. Our school community is already showing so much growth and positivity, and we are thrilled to see so many students earning Positive Office Referrals for their outstanding character and effort. With our successful Walkathon behind us and many more great events to come, October is sure to bring even more reasons to celebrate!
Celebrate the Great!

These referrals are to recognize the stellar efforts of students! Students nominated are recognized weekly for their good work and efforts towards these habits of character and leadership!
Great job to all of our Positive Office Referral Recipients for the month of September!!

Hi-Five Friday
On Friday, September 27, Northern Lincoln Elementary School had an exciting Hi-Five Friday visit from Lincoln High School athletes! Our students were thrilled to welcome these role models, who brought high energy and positivity as they greeted everyone with smiles and high-fives. This special event was a great way to kick off the day and inspire our students to work hard and stay active, just like the athletes they look up to. We look forward to more Hi-Five Fridays and fostering strong connections between our schools!

Newest Respiratory Viral Guidelines
(COVID-19, FLU, and RSV)
CDC/RIDOH
What To Do:
Stay home and away from others (including people you live with who are not sick) if you have respiratory virus symptoms that aren't better explained by another cause. These symptoms can include fever, chills, fatigue, cough, runny nose, and headache, among others.
When To Resume Activities:
You can go back to your normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, both are true:
Your symptoms are getting better overall, and
You have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication)
When you go back to your normal activities, It is recommended to take added precaution over the next 5 days, such as taking additional steps for cleaner air, hygiene, masks, physical distancing, and/or testing when you will be around other people indoors.
Important To Note:
- If you develop a fever or you start to feel worse after you have gone back to normal activities, stay home and away from others again for at least 24 hours. If after 24 hours your symptoms have improved/resolved you will need to follow the resume normal activities guidelines, which include :
Your symptoms are improving overall, AND
You have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication). Then take added precaution for the next 5 days.
Monitor your symptoms: If you have an emergency warning sign (like trouble breathing or chest pain), seek emergency medical care immediately.

Attendance Updates
Every day counts!
Rhode Island defines chronic absenteeism as the percentage of students who miss 10% or more of school days during the year (or two days per month).
DID YOU KNOW? Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
- Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college!
The Importance of Attendance for Success
Trimester 1 Attendance Raffle!
Regular attendance is key to your child's learning and social-emotional growth. Being present in school helps students stay on track with their academics, build friendships, and develop important life skills. Every day counts! When students miss school, they miss valuable opportunities to learn and grow alongside their peers.
At Northern Lincoln Elementary, we can’t stress enough how crucial regular attendance is for student success. To show our support and make things even more exciting, our Northern Attendance Committee is launching a year-long Attendance Raffle – and we’re kicking it off with Trimester 1!
Any student who misses fewer than 3 days of school during the first trimester will be automatically entered for a chance to win one of 6 family prize packs (one per grade!). Any student entered will also be featured on our Attendance Wall of Fame!
The raffle will be held during the school day on Wednesday, November 27. Students must be present that day to win! So let’s make every day count and finish Trimester 1 strong!

Northern is proud to be a Title I School!
What Parents Should Know About Title I
Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act provides financial assistance to state and local educational agencies to meet the needs of at-risk children. The goal of Title I is to provide instructional services and activities which support students in meeting the state’s challenging performance standards.
What will Title I do for my child?
The Title I program will provide your child with extra educational assistance beyond the regular classroom when needed. Title I schools will identify the students at their school who need the most educational assistance based on the criteria that the school has chosen. Students do NOT have to be from low-income families to receive Title I services.
