NSSEO Strategic Plan Update
Shining Stars - Layne & Ivan
This month, we have two incredible shining stars. First, we are delighted to spotlight Layne, an outstanding student who has brought joy, leadership, and determination to Timber Ridge’s classroom over the past two years. Layne’s infectious smile and positive attitude brighten our days, and his growth has been truly inspiring.
Layne is a dedicated student who actively participates in class discussions, puts in tremendous effort, and welcomes feedback to improve. His strong academic skills and genuine desire to succeed have made him a standout in the classroom. Beyond academics, Layne’s creativity, humor, and kindness have helped him build meaningful relationships with both adults and peers.
Highlights of Layne’s journey include:
Being one of our youngest students to begin reintegration into his home school.
Achieving or exceeding grade-level academic performance.
Consistently putting the needs of others ahead of his own.
Making significant strides in identifying and managing his emotions, even in challenging situations.
Demonstrates leadership across all aspects of his day, from the classroom to the playground and social activities.
Layne’s hard work and perseverance have led to incredible progress, and we are so proud of his achievements. Thank you, Layne, for being a shining example of determination, leadership, and kindness!
We are also thrilled to recognize Ivan, as our Shining Star! Since joining us in January 2023, Ivan has undergone an inspiring transformation, particularly starting in the spring of 2024. His dedication to personal growth, teamwork, and leadership has left a lasting impact on his peers, staff, and school community.
Ivan’s classroom team speaks highly of his willingness to assist staff and actively participate in discussions about social-emotional learning (SEL). His thoughtful contributions and supportive nature have made him a valued member of the Timber Ridge community.
As a participant in Timber Ridge’s CAAEL sports program, Ivan has displayed outstanding leadership and sportsmanship. He is known for warmly welcoming new students and staff, and fostering an inclusive and encouraging environment.
Ivan’s remarkable highlights include:
A dramatic turnaround in his behavior and attitude since joining Timber Ridge.
Intensive collaboration with his family, District 21, and his Timber Ridge team to support his growth.
Becoming a role model for using effective coping strategies.
Demonstrating a genuine desire to help his classmates succeed.
Building strong connections with staff and peers.
Believing in himself and achieving Timber Ridge’s highest behavioral level, Level 4, in November.
Ivan’s journey reminds us of the power of resilience, self-belief, and the support of a dedicated community. We couldn’t be prouder of all he has accomplished—congratulations, Ivan!
Timber Ridge Continuous Improvement Plan Update
Principal Mike Wagrowski shared updates on Timber Ridge’s Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP), highlighting three key goals aimed at enhancing student outcomes and fostering a supportive, collaborative learning environment:
Goal 1: Collaborative & Proactive Solutions
Inspired by the work of Ross Greene, this approach turns moments of crisis into opportunities for growth. The framework involves:
- Listening with curiosity.
- Defining events candidly.
- Collaboratively creating solutions.
- Repairing relationships.
This process ensures consistent, meaningful discussions with students about stress-related behaviors and complements existing methods.
Goal 2: Team Functioning - Engaging in Healthy Conflict
Focusing on trust and communication, this goal emphasizes productive team interactions using insights from thought leaders like Patrick Lencioni and Brene Brown. Key practices include:
- Encouraging equal participation in discussions.
- Promoting eye contact, energy, and direct communication.
- Emphasizing a solution-oriented mindset to resolve conflicts effectively.
The aim is to foster a culture of "productive ideological conflict" where all voices are valued.
Goal 3: Increasing the Joy of Writing and Learning Math
Writing:
Timber Ridge is addressing diverse writing challenges by:
- Implementing daily language reviews to reinforce writing skills.
- Using graphic organizers to expand ideas into structured writing.
- Balancing technical conventions with student voice.
- Focusing on high-interest writing topics and universal rubrics to measure growth.
Math:
To bridge foundational gaps and shift fixed mindsets, Timber Ridge:
- Employs intervention tools like Dreambox, Freckle, and IXL.
- Introduces varied teaching methods to support growth mindsets.
- Adopts enVision Math to deepen understanding through visual models and real-world problem-solving tasks.
These focused efforts underscore Timber Ridge’s commitment to student success and continuous improvement across academics and social-emotional growth.
