Howdy Collegiate Academy Family
This week, we had a very successful Homecoming celebration filled with school spirit and excitement! Both students and staff actively participated in the theme days, which created a fun and engaging atmosphere across campus. The energy and enthusiasm everyone brought truly contributed to the positive culture we strive for.
We were especially thrilled to see the incredible mums proudly worn by our students! The creativity and school pride displayed through these beautiful traditions made the week even more special. I absolutely love this tradition and how it brings everyone together to celebrate Homecoming.
As we reach the six-week mark of the school year, I want to remind everyone that Progress Report 2 will post to Skyward on Wednesday. Please take the time to monitor Skyward to view your scholar's academic progress and stay informed about their performance. Additionally, progress reports for Dallas College courses will be available in eConnect during the following windows: September 15-30, 2024, for 8-week courses, and September 22-October 7, 2024, for 16-week courses. Make sure to check eConnect to stay up to date on your student's college progress as well. Staying on top of these reports will help ensure your scholar's continued success!

- Students with a diagnosed disability should connect with Accessibility Services as soon as possible to be considered for accommodations.
- Tutoring Services are available at all Dallas College campuses and online. Please encourage your students to seek assistance early and regularly to avoid falling behind in their classes. Students attending tutoring will be best served if they enter the session with a clear problem or concern in mind.

Therefore, please encourage students to adhere to their course syllabi and calendars, complete all assigned readings and homework, and seek assistance from instructors when needed. The meeting invitation is forthcoming.
Progress Monitoring
We're excited to announce that progress monitoring for our Dallas College courses has officially started! Each student will meet one-on-one with a DHS Collegiate Academy staff member to review their academic progress in their college courses. During these meetings, students will log into their Dallas College eCampus platform, and together with their assigned staff member, they will review course syllabi, assignments, and upcoming due dates.
If a student is in need of additional support, the staff member will assist them in contacting their professors, setting up tutoring sessions, and utilizing Dallas College's academic support resources. This is a crucial step in ensuring that each scholar is on track and getting the help they need to succeed in their college classes.
To keep you informed, the Collegiate Academy staff member will complete a Progress Monitoring Form after each meeting. This form will detail the academic courses your scholar is taking, their current grades, and any comments or notes the staff member may have to communicate how your scholar is doing in their college classes.
Please be sure to check your email regularly, as the Progress Monitoring Form will be sent from the email address noreply@formresponse.com. Below, you will find an example of what the form may look like.
This process is part of our commitment to supporting your scholar’s academic success and ensuring they have the resources they need to excel.
Dallas College Clubs and Organizations
In addition to the many clubs and organizations available at DHS and the Collegiate Academy, our students also have the opportunity to participate in Dallas College clubs and organizations. For example, this week, Ariana Harris attended the Dallas College Student Leadership Institute. This organization will help her develop essential skills such as collaboration, communication, problem-solving, emotional intelligence, and more. Dallas College offers a variety of experiences that can enrich your personal and intellectual growth, contributing to your overall academic success. To explore these opportunities, check out the available experiences by contacting the advisor or the Office of Student Life.
Mountain View College Check In and Out Procedures
Parents/guardians are kindly requested to notify the Collegiate MVC staff a minimum of 2 hours prior to any early pick-up arrangements. To facilitate this process, parents/guardians should send an email to the Collegiate MVC staff indicating the scholar's name, student's Duncanville ISD ID number, date, and time of the intended early pick-up or late arrival.
For cases of early pick-up, it is essential to attach a scanned copy of the parent/guardian's photo ID to the email.
Before departing the campus premises, the scholar is required to complete the check-out procedure at the designated MVC location in the presence of the Collegiate MVC staff.
To ensure a smooth transition, a Collegiate MVC staff member will be assigned to accompany the student and oversee their departure for pick-up.

Counselor Corner
We thank you for being our valued partners as we work together to educate the children in our district. This school year, we are continuing the work to expand our social-emotional learning (SEL) support and skills within our students. Beginning September 23 – October 11, students will participate in an online survey to assess their SEL skills. From the results of these surveys, we will learn ways that we can provide support and guidance to enhance SEL skills within our students.
We will be asking students to reflect on their mindsets and approaches to learning via this online survey that will be completed here at school. The survey shouldn’t take more than 15-20 minutes for a student to complete.
- 9th Graders will complete in MAPS class
- 10th Graders will complete in Chemistry class
- 11th & 12th Graders will complete during study hall in the East Seminar beginning Friday, September 27, 2024.
We are partnering with a third-party vendor to support us in administering these surveys. The responses to these surveys will be completely confidential; however, responses that reveal a student may be in danger or distress will result in our counselors and/or administrators following up with that student to ensure the student’s safety.
Families can opt out of the survey by completing the form linked here. If you have questions about the SEL survey, please do not hesitate to contact u
Senor Conferences will continue through October 11th. Students will receive a copy of their transcript and a course audit sheet showing what courses need to be completed for graduation.

ASVAB Testing
On October 3, 2024 students at Duncanville High School will have the opportunity to take the ASVAB Career Exploration exam. The ASVAB CEP allows students to discover their strengths and weaknesses while empowering them to map out post-secondary plans that work for them.
The ASVAB Career Exploration Program examination is an aptitude test that allows students to explore future career options based on their individual strengths. While this test is used by the military for placement of those interested in a career in the armed forces, it is in NO way a commitment to join the military or even to speak with a military recruiter. Only YOU can release your scores to the military! The ASVAB CEP is an invaluable tool in exploring careers best suited to you.
Should you decide the military is an option for you, recruiters can use this examination to determine what jobs you show an aptitude for within the military. For those of you who already know you are going to pursue a military career post-graduation, this test session will not count against the 3 attempts the armed forces allows.
If you are interested in participating in the October 3, 2024 ASVAB please complete the survey here. The deadline to sign up is September 27, 2024.
Volunteers for Field Trips & College Visits
Parents/Guradians, WE NEED YOU!
At the DHS Collegiate Academy, we are committed to providing our students with enriching experiences that extend beyond the classroom. This year, we aim to offer our scholars a variety of opportunities to explore colleges and universities, as well as engage with the arts, music, and humanities. Safety and Security
Clear Backpack
Clear backpacks are required on all campuses for students in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. Panther safety is our number one priority and clear backpacks will allow us to see, stop, and protect. Staff will be able to quickly and easily SEE what is being brought into our schools. This will allow us to STOP any unsafe items at the door and will allow us to further PROTECT our students and staff. Clear backpacks are not intended to be a complete safety solution but they will add a valuable layer to our comprehensive safety plan. #SeeStopProtect
We have created a comprehensive website to provide you with further information about this requirement at http://www.duncanvilleisd.org/clearbackpacks. #SafeDvilleSchools
Student ID Badges
Attention students,
To enhance safety and security on campus, all students are required to wear their ID badges visibly around their necks at all times. If a student does not have their ID, they will be issued a temporary badge at the beginning of first period.
Each student will receive two temporary ID badges. If a student continues to not have their ID badge after the provision of temporary badges, they will be directed to their assistant principal for further assistance.
Thank you for your cooperation in maintaining a secure learning environment.
Attendance Matters
Attending school is crucial for a myriad of reasons. Not only is it a legal requirement but also a fundamental aspect of academic success. Consistent attendance ensures that students receive continuous instruction, engage in interactive learning experiences, and build a strong foundation of knowledge. Moreover, regular school attendance fosters a sense of routine and discipline, preparing students for future responsibilities. The Texas Education Code's 90% rule underscores the direct correlation between attendance and academic achievement, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a minimum attendance rate to support students' overall success in their educational journey.
Attendance Recovery:
A student shall not be given credit or a final grade for a class unless the student is in attendance 90 percent of the days the class is offered. This means that your child is in danger of failing one or more courses for the school year.
In order to receive credit or a final grade for a class, a student is required to attend class 90 percent of the days class is offered, regardless of whether the student's absences are excused or unexcused.
If a student does not attend in accordance with the law, they may not receive credit for their courses. Students will have the opportunity to regain credit by attending attendance recovery. Dates and times are to be determined.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the 90% rule?
- Texas Education Code, Section 25.092: The 90% rule is a provision in the Texas Education Code (TEC) that applies to a student in any grade level from kindergarten through grade 12. TEC Section 25.092 provides that a student may not be given credit or a final grade for a class unless the student is in attendance 90% of the days the class is offered. All absences count, whether excused or unexcused, in determining whether the student has attended the requisite number of days to receive class credit or a final grade.
- The 90% rule is based on the number of days available to attend in a semester, per course. Duncanville HS is on a modified block schedule and the days will vary. While we understand situations happen, your goal should be to attend school daily, on-time, to every class.
- Regardless of academic performance, students have to attend class at least 90% of the time to earn course credit.
- You will receive a specific letter with detailed information about your days.
- Tuesday and Thursday school is from 3:15 pm - 6:15 pm and Saturday school is from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm in the DHS East Cafeteria. You will enter the building at the “fishbowl,” or main entrance on the 10-12 grade side of the campus.

Better FAFSA
Today, the U.S. Department of Education (Department) released new details on the redesigned and streamlined Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form. The new FAFSA will make it easier than ever for students to get financial aid for college and help 610,000 more students from low-income backgrounds receive Pell Grants. In total, it will allow 1.5 million more students access to the maximum Pell Grant award, bringing the total number of students eligible for the maximum Pell Grant to over 5.2 million.
Students who complete the form will receive a confirmation and see their estimated student aid eligibility. The new FAFSA will allow students and families to use federal tax data transferred directly and securely from the Internal Revenue Service. Once the application is complete, students will receive a confirmation email including their estimated Student Aid Index and Pell Grant eligibility. Students and families will also be able to complete paper forms by downloading a PDF form and mailing it to the Department of Education.
Community Service
The Duncanville High School Collegiate Academy is committed to strengthening the relationship between the school and the community through student involvement and volunteerism. Involvement in community service allows our scholars to develop important skills such as citizenship, collaboration, public relations, and real-world experience. Scholars are encouraged to complete a minimum of 320 hours of community service over four years (80 hours per year), with at least 160 hours completed in the city of Duncanville. While volunteer hours are no longer a graduation requirement, scholars who complete 40 or more hours during their four years in high school receive a special cord to wear on their graduation robes..
All community service work is done on a voluntary basis, and the scholars cannot be paid for their work in any manner. No hours can be completed during the regular school day. Volunteer hours are completed ONLY for non-profit organizations, and the voluntary work must benefit the entire community. The opportunities for community service vary from scholar to scholar.
Duncanville High School Collegiate Academy’s partnership with parents and the community is an essential element of our success. To that end, parents are encouraged to complete 3 hours of community service, per semester, with Duncanville High School Collegiate Academy.
Record keeping for community service hours is done by a company called X2VOL. Each student creates an account in X2VOL.com and is responsible for inputting his/her work hours. This requires the date on which the work was done, the number of hours completed, a description of the work done, and the name of the person who can verify that the student actually did the work. In addition, a telephone number and email address must be provided for the person who can verify the work hours. The person who verified the work must work for the organization for which the work was done. On completion of community service work, scholars have 90 days during which they must put the information in X2VOL.
The Duncanville High School Collegiate Academy partnership with the City of Duncanville provides community service opportunities specifically for Collegiate Academy scholars. Additional opportunities are available for all Duncanville High School and Duncanville High School Collegiate Academy scholars via the Community Service Corner.
