Magyar's Message Feb. 9, 2024
-From The Desk of the Superintendent-
Dear ALCS Families,
It was a busy week in our schools and we have a lot to celebrate as our students and staff continue to do amazing things in and out of the classroom.
Today (February 9) was a big day as many of our elementary school students marked the 100th Day of School milestone with games, crafts, and other 100-themed activities. Our students are 100 days smarter as they continue to excel in the classroom.
Several of our students (grades 4-6) competed in the Educational Service Center of Lorain County’s annual Math 24 Challenge. The game helps to build fluency and cultivate retention of critical math skills. All of our students performed well. Congratulations to fifth-grader Presley Lazowski who finished as the third runner-up in the fifth-grade division. In the sixth-grade division, Colin Bodean was the second runner-up, Alexander Bodean was the first runner-up, and Cal Brickley was the champion. Great job!
Middle school students (grades 6-8) recently competed at the North-Central Ohio Chapter Mathcounts competition at Ashland University. Our Avon Lake team finished in second place. The team includes seventh-graders Carson Brown and Nick Montes, and sixth -graders Alex and Colin Bodean.
The Scholastic Games radio quiz program began its season last week on AM 930 WEOL (FM 100.3) radio with a 410 to 260 victory for Avon Lake over the academic team from Midview High School. Congrats to ALHS students Britta Sevcik, Alex Shmiel, and team captain Dylan Missal.
Alex won the program’s “Standout Scholar” award, an honor presented to the student who contributed the most to his or her team, as determined by scorekeepers. It includes a $50 cash prize.
Best of luck to our winter sports teams as they prepare to head into their respective tournament competitions. Congratulations to our hockey team finishing in first place in their division this season. Our boys bowling team finished in first place at the North Shore Bowling Conference Tournament. Our Learwood Middle School wrestlers also won the SWC Championship. Thank you to our coaches, families, and fans for their support and encouragement.
Congratulations to ALHS student athlete Michael Thomson officially signing his letter of intent to play football at the next level at Missouri Western State University.
The arts were well represented this month as ALHS juniors Matthew Sherban and Jeremy Sapola were selected and performed with the OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) All-State Choir in Columbus. More than 1,200 students auditioned and 150 were selected for this prestigious honor. The students attended the OMEA Professional Development Conference and gained valuable knowledge regarding best practices in the field of music education, as well as the opportunity to interact and perform with other students from around the state.
As a reminder, our district will transition to using the BoardDocs online platform for our Board of Education agendas and document storage. Our district staff is finalizing training on the new system which will be up and running and posted on the district website in mid-February. We also will begin audio recording our Board of Education meetings in February. Meetings will now take place on the third Tuesday of the month and begin at 6 p.m. in the L.A.K.E. Center at the high school.
If you know someone in our community who is currently not affiliated with our schools, but would like to receive information regarding our schools, please have them subscribe to our email list at the following link, click here.
Thank you for your continued support of our schools.
Sincerely,
Joelle Magyar
