Principal's Spotlight
What a great start to a great year, Steeby families! Students and teachers have been working so hard at getting to know each other, learning routines, and getting classroom learning underway! Thank you for your hard work at getting your precious packages to us everyday and sharing them with us!
On Monday, September 9th, students will be introduced to the 9 character traits of the year from Capturing Kids' Hearts in a short assembly. We will send home monthly resources/CKH newsletters to build the connection from school to home around our work here to help support conversations they may have with you. As we move along in September, we will continue to focus on the Leadworthy Character traits of Empathy and Connecting with Heart.
At the end of the month, Wayland Homecoming will take place and Steeby will once again participate in Spirit Days to help support our Wayland Wildcats. Look for more information to come as the end of the month gets nearer.
Community, school, and home are so important to the success of our students. We look forward to building those relationships in a big way this year and are excited about the opportunities they will have to learn how they all intermingle!
To the best year yet!
Yours in education,
Mrs. Bailey

Media Moments
Happy New School Year! Last week in media class students got to know one another and chatted about their favorite foods and books. Students even drew a picture of their favorite book. This week students visited Information Place to listen to a story on Bookflix or Storyline Online. Then students played an educational game on PBS Kids. Information Place is a great place for second and third graders to visit at home because all the websites are educational. Check it out: https://sites.google.com/waylandunion.org/libraries/home.
Happy Reading and Happy Learning!

Steeby Building - Key Information
School Day Schedule
Our school day schedule runs from 8:45am to 3:45pm daily. The half day schedule runs from 8:45am to 11:45am. Students are expected to be in class by 8:45am each day.
Pick Up & Drop Off Procedures
Morning Drop Off is from 8:35 to 8:45, with students needing breakfast entering at 8:35 and the other students lining up until 8:40 when classrooms open. Please DO NOT drop off students in the morning and drive away until a staff member appears at the door at 8:35.
End of the day pick up is between 3:45 and 3:55. After 3:55, any late pick ups will be walked back to the office to await their pick up.
Morning drop off and afternoon pick up times are a very busy time. Safety and security are our number 1 priority. Please follow these guidelines for smooth transitions.
All students being dropped off in the morning or picked up at the end of the day must enter Steeby Elementary via E. Maple St. Traffic in the rear parking area follows a one way flow. Please do not let your student exit your vehicle until you reach the unloading zone in between the front of door #3 and the playground fence. To ensure safety and expedite the process, please prepare your child to unload while in the loop. Please do not park in the loop or pull out of the loop as this creates a danger to our students and staff. See the map below for flow details.
We understand that schedules change and you student may need to be picked up early. All requests for end of day pick up must be made to the office NO LATER THAN 3:15pm. Requests made after this time may not be able to be accommodated.
Attendance
Students are expected to be in class by 8:45am each day. Students will be marked tardy if they arrive after this time. PLEASE NOTE: Students who arrive to school AFTER 9:00am are marked HALF DAY ABSENT.
Students are expected to complete the school day which ends are 3:45pm. If the need arises for a student to leave BEFORE 3:30pm, they will be marked HALF DAY ABSENT. Students who leave between 3:30pm and 3:45pm will be marked AFTERNOON TARDY.
If your student needs to miss school because of illness, or necessary appointment, please contact the office at (269) 792-2281. If you call outside of normal business hours there will be an option to leave a message. If we don't hear from you, your student will be marked unknown and you will receive a follow-up call from the school.
Important Forms
ICHAT Volunteer Forms
Parents who wish to enter the school for any activities, volunteer opportunities, or field trips, must have an active ICHAT background check on file. ICHAT background checks are good for 1 year from submission date and cover schools in the entire district. That means if you have students in multiple buildings across the district, you only need to fill out ONE ICHAT form. ICHAT request forms can be filled out on our website, www.waylandunion.org. Click Parents/Students > Parent Quick Links > ICHAT Request Form, or simply click the button below to get started!
