Spooner Middle School News
January 2023
From the Principal...
Hello Spooner Middle School Families,
We wrapped up a busy December at SMS with our week long Holiday dress-up days. It was an exciting way for us to head into our Winter break.
December certainly brought its share of winter weather to our area. Below are a few important notes and reminders about inclement weather and school closing procedures for your reference:
Automated phone calls will go out as soon as the decision is made about school closure. Please make sure you have accurate information on Skyward.
Please check our SASD website: www.spooner.k12.wi.us as an announcement will be posted.
Our SASD Facebook page.
As with any situation, we will try to communicate with you in a timely manner using the communication platforms we have in the event of inclement weather. Please communicate with your student about what your family plan would be given the situations we most commonly face: late start, early close or closed for the day.
Our students did a tremendous job in their Holiday Concert. It was wonderful to see the talents within our band and choir programs. A big thank you to Mrs. Linton and Mr. Scaffidi for their hard work and preparation in the process. Fun was had by all!
We have had many important successes to celebrate at SMS so far this school year. Our academic accomplishments continue to elevate our standard of student achievement. Students and staff have been working hard to meet academic goals and benchmarks. Student behavior has continued its positive trend as we’ve entered break. This is a credit to the hard work our students and staff have demonstrated to align with our RAILS WAY and school expectation of RESPECT. Respect is best given when it is initiated and we continue the important focus of treating others how we would want to be treated. Simple, but not always easy. Sometimes we need to “press pause” before we respond to ensure we are using the important tenets of RESPECT. Thank you for your continued support in reinforcing these skills. We all play important roles in keeping SMS a safe, positive and respectful building for all.
Sincerely,
Mr. Fizel
SMS Principal
Inclement Weather Procedures
January is usually the beginning of inclement weather season for the school year. Emergency closing can occur for various reasons. Most often an emergency school closing may be due to inclement weather. Should inclement weather or other emergency situations require the District to close school(s) the following procedures shall be followed:
Automated calls will be placed to voluntary student primary phone numbers beginning as soon as practical, using the District’s emergency notification system.
Local television and radio stations will also be notified as soon as practical.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to monitor TV and radio stations for notifications in an emergency.
Television: Northland’s News Center-Duluth: CBS (Channel 3),
KBJR-Duluth: NBC (Channel 6) WDIO-Duluth: ABC (Channel 10)
KSTP-Cities: ABC (Channel 5)
Radio Station: WJMC (96.1 FM, 1240 AM)
DrydenWire
Please be aware of these procedures and modes of communication as inclement weather seems imminent
Nurse Notes
It’s 2023, and we are off to a fresh (and cold) start!
The turn of the year is the perfect time for rethinking goals and changing habits.
What is it that you plan to work on in the new year?
Do you plan to exercise more?
Eat healthier?
Spend more time with family?
Creating change in our habits is never easy, so it’s best to make a plan if we expect our behavior
to shift. Instead of saying “I’m going to ‘eat healthier,’” perhaps defining what that actually
means would lead to the results you desire.
One framework to follow for making these kinds of plans is called S-M-A-R-T goals: Specific,
Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This sounds involved, but here is an
example of what it might look like in regards to the example above (Eating Healthier)…
Desired Goal: I’m going to eat 6 servings of fruit and vegetables Mon – Friday in 2023:
Specific – Focus is on increasing intake of fruit and veggies
Measurable – 6 servings
Achievable – If you currently never eat fruits and veggies, 6 servings might be a stretch,
but the goal should carry a little challenge while also being attainable. When figuring out
if you can accomplish your goal, think through how you will source the fruit and
vegetables, as well as how you will include them into meals. This achievable mark is
perhaps the most difficult aspect of accomplishing goals, because it requires some
planning.
Relevant – Why is eating healthier relevant to your life? Well, you’ll likely experience a
variety of positive results that make life more enjoyable for you and the people around
you such as an uptick in energy, better sleep, a more pleasant all-around attitude, and
clarity of thought.
Time-Bound – Goals are often more effectively accomplished when there’s a timetable
in which to achieve them. By the time we’re done with 2023, your goal of eating 6
servings of fruit and vegetables Monday – Friday may establish itself as an actual
lifestyle change that allows you to be healthier and experience life more fully!
So, pick a goal, see if it’s SMART, and stick to it over the next 365 days of 2023.
