Welcome September
The last day of summer is fast approaching, and the autumn equinox is right around the corner. Fall is a season for cuffing now, which is one of our last remaining animalistic urges to survive by staying warm. It is a time for infinity scarves, for sweatpants, for pumpkin spice lattes, orange colored everything, and Halloween-themed tube socks. But it used to be much more than all that. There's a lot to be said about the spiritual meaning behind the fall equinox. In fact, fall being marked by the autumn equinox was known as the holiday of Mabon in the Pagan calendar. It marked a spiritual celebration to honor the change of seasons, which used to pose a massive challenge to our survival as humans.
Today, though, the fall equinox is simply one of the two days out of the year when the days and nights are equal in length. Celebrations that accompany it, if you do celebrate it, are more symbolically spiritual than overtly religious, and there are a lot of ways to do that. The intentions you set around this time will stay with you throughout the winter and carry you into the spring.
September, I’ll Remember
The warm-hot days of August
Had fallen into the coolness of September
As I found myself once again
Sitting by the open window
Watching steam from my coffee
Swirl through the open screen
And with the dancing breezes
That scattered the leaves of fall
Fade gently into nothingness
It was the time of creation
A time of melancholy and contemplation
When a pen filled with the ink
Of unwritten prose and rhymes
And stories of my life
Reflected in the morning mirror
Into the words of an old poet
Drinking a cup of coffee
And looking out at a brand new day
-C.J. Krieger
The leaves of trees change color in the fall because of changes in temperature and daylight. As the days grow shorter and cooler, trees begin to draw cells inward to preserve their energy. Without as much sun, the leaves are no longer needed to help the tree manufacture food, so the tree drops them.
This isn't the case with all trees however, some, called evergreens, keep most of their leaves year-round. It's only deciduous trees that drop their leaves annually.
September's Harvest Moon
The spiritual meaning of the Harvest Moon which occurs during September this year is all about balance and abundance, whether you’re celebrating the Harvest Moon or the Corn Moon. It’s a time to honor and appreciate your home. A time for reflection and gratitude. Full moons always symbolize a time of climactic conclusion, but this is felt even more deeply now as we near the changing of seasons and the cooler months ahead are imminent. We are beginning to turn inward. This is a time of balance just as it is for the natural world around us. We feel the coming of the darkness and are pulled towards our spiritual side in a new way. This is a wonderful time to realign with our spirit, soul, and Self. September’s Moon helps to settle us into a much slower pace and rhythm. Immerse yourself and enjoy these last days of warmth so you can gladly enter the darkness of Winter.
Family
" Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It's splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world."
- L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables
Hope this finds you well, in every way. I am often reminded of Anne of Green Gables' wonderful line, "I am well in body but considerably rumpled up in spirit."
I sometimes think many of us, while well in body, may feel a bit rumpled up in spirit with the pandemic once again spreading rapidly and a feeling of anxiety as we watch the world around us. At least that is for me. While we seemed to be getting back to some normalization, we are now again at a place that requires thought about simple activities, planning, and wondering if it needs to be done. While we adjust to the once again reality of being cautious at every crick and turn maybe it is time to adjust to a world that has changed. I ponder if these are teachable moments. Teaching us about ourselves, our relationships, the gaps in care, in preparedness and the amazing things we are capable of as well as the divide it can cause. And then I believe yes, it is a teachable moment, and it would be a shame if I didn’t take the lesson.
As August came to a close we watched many things take place around our home. As we stood outside and took the first day of school picture I looked at our son and thought where has the time gone. That little boy that once was is now a teenager starting the 8th grade. I watched as the car drove off with butterflies in my stomach, yet knowing he would be fine. A few days later he came home and informed us that he had made the football team. Yes, wide receiver on the offensive line. Not a clue as to what any of that meant I listened intently into his excitement.
While we flourished in our son's excitement we also enjoyed another year of birthdays. My Mother and Patrick celebrated their birthdays in August. We travelled to the coast to celebrate my Mothers birthday. Patrick had to work and enjoyed a relaxing evening at home for his birthday. As August came to a close we watched the beautiful full moon light the sky. We picked the final tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers from our small garden and trimmed back the flowers getting ready for fall. Fall is the season that prepares nature for the pruning process which will ultimately result in seeds being planted for the next chapter. It’s a great time to take an inventory of what you need to trim back or tend to differently as you settle inward for the coming months. Take care and be safe dear friends.
With Love,
Ed
Did You Know
Did you know that September always starts on the same day of the week as December, but never ends on the same day of the week as another month?
September 6th is Labor Day
September 12 is Grandparents Day
September marks the start of fall. This years Autumnal Equinox occurs at 3:20 pm EDT on Wednesday, September 22. At this time, there are approximately equal hours of daylight and darkness.
September also celebrates National hug your hound day, International talk like a pirate day and national punctuation day.
September’s zodiac signs are Virgo and Libra. With a critical eye Virgo dissects and analyzes all sort of data. You seek perfection, and are able to see instantly the flaw in any given situation. Libras are tactful diplomats of the zodiac. Ever concerned with the impact of your words and actions, you strive for harmony in all things.
September birth flowers are Aster and Morning Glory. Asters are mainly symbols of powerful love. Morning Glories are simple symbols of affection. Those who rise early may be able to watch these lovely blooms open.
September's Birthstone is the Sapphire. Sapphires are a form of corundum, the second-hardest mineral. Commonly ranging in color from light to dark blue, they are found chiefly in placer deposits, which are formed when minerals naturally separate from other sediment due to gravity.
September’s full Harvest Moon reaches its peak on Monday, September 20, 2021. This year, look for September’s full Harvest Moon to rise in the southeast just after sunset on Monday, September 20—just two days before the fall equinox. This full Moon reaches peak illumination at 7:54 P.M. Eastern Time on the 20th. One thing that sets the Harvest Moon apart from other full moon is that it’s not associated with a specific month, as the others are. Instead, the Harvest Moon relates to the timing of the autumnal equinox.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to recognize the children and families affected by childhood cancers and to emphasize the importance of supporting research on these devastating conditions.

Questions and Counsel
Hello Katelyn,
How do I know when it’s love vs attachment?
Hi!
Such a good question. Love is synonymous with freedom. True, healthy love allows you the space to be yourself in full expression of sexuality, sensuality, and spirituality. Vulnerability and emotional communication comes easier because love listens without judgement. Attachment is fear based. Attachment is unresolved trauma feeling at home in chaos.
You deserve love.

Spiritual Practices
Spiritual Practices for the Fall Equinox
Every now and then we ask people to share something about how this time of year makes them feel. Several people expressed how much they love the fall. They were excited about sweaters and warm soup. At the Autumn equinox there is a shift of emphasis from sun to moon, light to dark, action to contemplation, growth to dormancy, fruitfulness to composting, building up to letting go, and movement to stillness. Now is a good time to pause after the frenetic activity of the growing season and consider how best to recuperate, regenerate, and replenish your energy this autumn. Wednesday September 23 at 3:20pm, marks the beginning of Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. Take a moment to honor this point in time together with someone. Celebrate the transition of seasons. Through the practice of intentional season keeping, we can let our souls rest in our intrinsic relationship with Nature. We can reconnect with the rhythm of the earth and the festivals our ancestors celebrated. We can follow the natural cycle of balance-activity-balance-rest and find healing from the stress, depression, anxiety, and general spiritual malaise that affects so many of us.
During this time celebrate the Autumn Equinox by doing these simple things.
Listen to Nature
On the actual equinox take a moment to go outside, smell the air. Notice the daylight and the darkness. Feel the sun on your skin at noon and gaze at the moon after dark. Connect with the reality of decomposition beginning to happen around you. Watch the trees gracefully prepare to practice the art of letting go. Give thanks for your senses that allow you to experience the seasons. What do you learn as you smell, taste, see, touch, and listen to the world around you?
Listen to your community
Anytime in the next few weeks gather some friends for a dinner party, a bon fire, or a hike. Spend some time together in intentional conversation using the reflection questions below. Then have each person write a prayer of autumn blessing and put it in a bowl. Stand together around the bowl and give thanks for community. Close the ritual by having each person draw one of the prayers to take home with them.
Listen to your inner voice
Create a seasonal altar that helps you connect with the elements as they change around and within you. Allow this altar to be a sacred space to activate and hold your intention for the coming weeks of fall. Take a little time every day to sit and remember your intention and to offer prayers of thanks and healing for the world.
Place earth elements such as rocks, gemstones, and dirt in the North.
Place the water element in the West.
Place the fire element in the South.
Place air elements, such as incense, sage, feathers, and leaves in the East.
Ring a bell or clap for the element of space and place any special objects (your intention written out, meaningful jewelry, a picture of the Divine) in the center.
As you place each object, offer prayers of gratitude.
Wellness
If mindfulness is a state of active, open attention to the present, what is more mindful than laughter? Something strikes you as funny and you laugh. For that moment, the laughter, and the joy of being in the moment are all you are about.
"Comedy is defiance. It's a snort of contempt in the face of fear and anxiety. And it's the laughter that allows hope to creep back on the inhale." -- Will Durst
When anger, stress, or loneliness has you in its grip, you believe that you are living in the moment. Right now, at this very moment, you are miserable.
If you can go deeper, however, you may find that a lot of your pain isn't coming from what exists in the here and now. Instead, it's a product of a continuous loop of memories of the past and worries about the future.
One day, during an especially stressful period, my mind was racing with worry, emotional upheaval, fear about an upcoming procedure that was to be done as an outpatient. The noise in my head was deafening. Suddenly, out of nowhere, this popped into my head.
"Thank you for being a friend!"
Knowingly odd as it was and yes, I was quite shocked, but I just had to laugh. It was the theme song from The Golden Girls, a 1980s tv show I watched with family and friends. I grew up watching comedies such as The Carol Burnett Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Maude . They're silly, irreverent, and sometimes simply foolish and that's why they're funny. Somewhere in my brain, I knew I needed relief from all the stress I was under, and Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sofia came to the rescue!
If mindfulness is a state of active, open attention to the present, what is more mindful than laughter? Something strikes you as funny and you laugh. If you analyze it, it's just not funny anymore. For that moment, the laughter, and the joy of being in the moment are all you are about. You're like a child again, able to enjoy the moment without quantifying or analyzing your reaction.
Also, it is known that the simple act of laughing increases endorphins, the feel-good brain chemical, which helps decrease physical pain. You really do feel better after a good laugh.
Whenever I am stuck in upset or worry, I look to laugh with friends, co-workers or watch a funny movie. If I seriously need to giggle, I call or text my sister, who always breaks me up (and out of my low spirits) with a simple bazooka bubble gum joke. Laughing is a relief, separating me for the moment from worries. More than that, however, it "allows hope to creep back on the inhale."
As Mark Twain put it, "The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter."
