Week 6, Term 3 - 2024
Deputy Principal's Address
Our school community has truly come together to create some unforgettable memories for our students this fortnight. Book Week was a shining example of this, beginning with a special visit from Brenton McKenna, a talented graphic novelist from Broome. His session gave our students a glimpse into the creative process, turning a simple visit into a lasting memory of inspiration and discovery.
A huge thank you to all the families who contributed to the joy and excitement of our Book Week costume day. Your creativity and effort made the day special for everyone involved, turning the school into a vibrant tapestry of beloved characters. It was a day where our community’s shared love for reading and imagination brought learning to life in a fun and memorable way.
The success of our Book Fair is another testament to the strength of our community. With over $2,900 worth of books purchased, not only have we enriched our students’ reading experiences, but we’ve also reinvested in our school library, ensuring that the gift of knowledge continues to be passed down to future students. Congratulations to the students who excelled in the Book Week competitions—your creativity has added to the special memories of this week.
Throughout the term, our Positive Behaviour System has encouraged students to build memories through shared experiences. Reaching 5,000 Dojo points was a collective achievement, celebrated in unique and fun ways across the school. From the pre-primary’s playful "P" day to the upper school’s upcoming Bogan Bingo, and the high school’s café trip, these events highlight how our community comes together to celebrate positive behaviour and create lasting memories for our students. A heartfelt thank you to our teachers for their dedication in planning these special moments.
As we approach the athletics season, we look forward to more opportunities to come together as a community. The upcoming carnival on the 5th and 6th of September will be a chance for us all to support our students, as they create new memories of teamwork, perseverance, and achievement. We can’t wait to see everyone there, cheering on our athletes and celebrating the wonderful memories we continue to create together as a school community.
As we navigate a time of change within our school community, it’s more important than ever to stay positive, truthful, and supportive of one another. By focusing on open and honest communication, and avoiding the spread of rumours, we can ensure that our community remains strong and united. This commitment to truth and positivity will help us all move forward together, creating an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. Let's continue to support each other in making every upcoming event a positive and memorable experience for all.
Warm regards,
Katrina Smith
Deputy Principal

Year 2 mini-Olympics performance
Last week, the Year 2's presented a “mini-Olympics” assembly performance. The concept came about after watching the impressive performances of Australian and international athletes in Paris over the last few weeks and felt even more inspired to perform after competing in our very own potato Olympics in-class.
The assembly started with students representing Australia in an impressive BMX performance up and down the isles. This was then followed by a very graceful and talented Australian synchronised swimming performance. The assembly concluded with the final event, the 100m slow motion sprint. The crowd went wild and cheers could be heard from all over the school. It was a close finish, but Australia took home the gold!
A huge congratulations to the year 2 students. With only a short amount of time to prepare, they rose to the occasion and should be so proud.

An eventful Science Week
This year, we hosted a series of exciting lunchtime events to celebrate National Science Week, all centred around the theme of Species Survival. The first event kicked off with students designing parachutes to safely land eggs, simulating the importance of protection in nature. The next day, students explored the microscopic world, uncovering the hidden details of life that are vital for species to thrive. Midweek, our young scientists tested water quality, learning about the impact of clean water on ecosystems. The week wrapped up with a hands-on workshop where students created beeswax wraps, connecting to sustainable practices that support species survival. Students from multiple year levels eagerly participated, with many returning each day for more. The enthusiasm and curiosity shown by our students made this National Science Week one to remember!

"Leinster's Lit Stars: Students Dazzle in Book Week Parade"
From the high school desk:
The high school students at Leinster Community School have once again demonstrated their dedication and creativity, showcasing their enthusiasm during the recent Book Week celebrations! This annual event, which promotes the love of reading and the joy of literature, was a resounding success, thanks in no small part to the enthusiasm and participation of the students.
This year’s Book Week parade was a vibrant display of imagination, with the high schoolers getting into the spirit of Book Week. Among the standout costumes were the Teletubbies, who brought a touch of nostalgia to the parade, and characters from Gnomeo and Juliet, which added a whimsical flair to the event. Some students took on the role of bookworms, embodying their passion for reading, while others donned the colourful and dynamic outfits of comic book heroes and villains. Even Sponge Bob made an appearance! The effort put into their costumes and participation reflects the high standards they set for themselves and their peers!
The school community is incredibly proud of the students’ accomplishments and looks forward to seeing how they will continue to shine in the future.
In amongst the fun, the students have shown remarkable focus, balancing their rigorous face-to-face class assessments with the demands of learning. Their ability to manage their time effectively, juggle multiple assignments, and stay committed to their academic goals is fantastic. This dual approach to learning requires exceptional organisational skills and perseverance, as they integrate classroom instruction with independent study. Their hard work and disciplined approach not only highlight their academic prowess but also set a strong example of the school's STAR value of resilience and adaptability for their peers. This is a testament to the tutelage of Ms Brewster as our expert Science and Maths teacher and Mrs Ballard, our Well-Being Officer.
Keep up the great work high schoolers!

Health and Well-being Update
My gosh! Those 2 weeks went so, so fast! Before we know it the end of term will be upon us.
This fortnight we’ve been diving deep into conversations about friendships and how tricky relationships can be, especially with all the changes going on. It’s been a mix of emotions—some of us are feeling the weight of friendships evolving or drifting, while others are working through the ups and downs of these transitions.
It’s totally normal to have these mixed feelings. Friendships can shift in unexpected ways, and that’s something we all deal with at some point. What’s important is to stay understanding and open, both with ourselves and with others. It’s okay to feel a bit sad or confused but remember that this is also a chance for personal growth and new connections.
Navigating these complexities can be tough. It's normal to experience shifts in your social circle, and it’s important to remember that this is a natural part of life. Open and honest communication, along with empathy, can help manage these changes and strengthen existing bonds.
I wish you all the best and know my door is always open if you need a chat or just somebody to listen. Have a fabulous weekend, and please don’t hesitate to contact me via email: Danielle.Ballard@education.wa.edu.au or feel free to contact the school.
