What's Coming Up in the Fall?
NWEA Testing
- Fall NWEA testing started this week with our math testing sessions. Next week we will finish up with two days of reading testing. NWEA testing happens three times a year, in October, January, & May, and is an important part of the assessment process.
The Maine Mobile Biolab
- Mrs. Roberts-Prior has arranged a visit from the Maine Mobile Biolab during the week of October 13th. Seventh & eighth grade students will engage in on-site STEM lab experiences. Learn more at https://mainemobilebiolab.org/.
Progress Reports
- Mid-quarter progress reports will be mailed home on Friday, October 4th. Progress reports are an excellent opportunity for students and parents to connect about academic progress. If you have questions about your child's grades, please reach out to their teachers.
JFDS Boosters Craft Fair
- The Bulldog Boosters are hosting their Second Annual Craft Fair on Saturday, October 5, from 9 am to 3 pm. We currently have thirty-seven vendors signed up to attend. There will be a variety of crafts and delectable treats to choose from. This is a wonderful time to spend time with friends and family while enjoying the sights and smells of fall.
Fun Night
- The first Fun Night of the year is on Friday, October 18th. Fun Night is an opportunity for students to dance, play games in the gym, and socialize from 6 to 8PM. Fun Nights are open only to currently enrolled JFDS students, and are chaperoned by staff members.
Community Guest Servers
- In October, our Guest Server program launches into full swing. Last year we welcomed guests from the Bangor Police Department, WABI, Husson football, and more! Guests connect with students about their careers and their educational pathways.
Technology in Music Class
- Students in JFDS General Music Classes are exploring other ways to create music using technology. Students learned how to code out individual notes to either have their computer play a song or create a digital piano that would then be connected to a Makey Makey and a piece of paper to play a song. Students would then use a 6b Graphite pencil and a piece of paper to create a paper keyboard either using images, shapes, letter names. They had to make sure that they shaded in a strong connection so when the wires for the Makey Makey were attached to the paper, they could create a circuit. Students used Scratch to code out individual notes, then students connected a Makey Makey to their computer. Students used their musical knowledge to code out the notes, problem solving and teamwork skills to work through times their music wouldn’t play yet.
