SOLENG TOM ELEMENTARY
November 2024
Principal's Pen
Dear Soleng Tom Families,
Thank you to all those who were able to donate candy to our wonderful fall festival event! A great BIG THANK YOU to our wonderful PTSA and all the volunteers who made our Annual Fall Festival a “HUGE” success.
After some uncharacteristics 'hot' days these past few weeks it finally looks like Fall is upon us and the weather is getting a bit cooler. With the cooler temperatures students will be wearing jackets/sweaters to keep warm. Please be sure to write your child's name on their winter jackets, sweaters, mits, beanies etc. so we may return them if misplaced.
TAX CREDIT DONATIONS
It is time to start thinking about making your 2024 tax credit donation to Soleng Tom. By donating to Soleng Tom, you are taking control of how some of your taxes are being spent by the state. The State of Arizona allows a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for
contributions made to schools. There is still time for you to make your tax donation for the 2024 calendar year. You do not have to contribute the whole amount of $200 (single
taxpayer) or $400 (joint taxpayers) at once. You can spread your contributions over time as long as your final donation is made before December 31, 2024. We use your tax donations to pay for extracurricular activities, such as Stories That Soar, after school sports, field trips and equipment /materials that enhance our programs at Soleng Tom. Since the
money you can donate is money you would have to pay the state anyway, why not spend it the way you want? If you are one of the lucky ones who will be receiving a refund your refund is increased by the amount you contribute. It’s a Win - Win for everyone!! You may donate online, stop by our office or mail donations to the school. Our tax credit balance has been diminishing through all the wonderful activities and opportunities we have been providing our students over the past years. We’d like to send out a call for donations to be able to continue these activities and opportunities.
ATTENDANCE REMINDER
Attendance is important for success at any level of instruction. Instructional time is very important to us and we work hard to protect this time. When students are
absent, arrive late or leave early it not only interrupts their learning, it also interrupts the learning of others around them. We need your support! Please plan your schedules in such a way that the school day is a top priority. The school day starts at 8:30AM and dismissal is at 2:40PM (1:40PM on Wednesdays). Thank you to all of you who support our efforts to get all children to school on time and keep them in class until the end of the day. Every minute counts!!!!
Sincerely and Respectfully,
Oscar J. Dotson
Principal

HEALTH OFFICE NEWS
The cold and flu season is approaching. Here at school, we want to promote practices that encourage preparedness and healthy classrooms. Please be sure the Health Office has current contact phone numbers by updating information in your ParentVue account.
We will monitor students for illness. Please keep children home from school if they have: Temperature of 100-degrees or more, have a cough or have had vomiting or diarrhea the past 24-hours. Please make arrangements for your child to be picked up from school and to be kept at home while ill and recovering. Please refer to the trifold, Is My Child Sick?, sent early this school year. Consult your doctor about influenza vaccines for your child and family. The CDC recommends influenza vaccine for pregnant women, children and anyone with a chronic disease like asthma, diabetes.
We encourage and practice healthy habits:
1. Sneezing into your elbow
2. Covering coughs with a tissue
3. Washing hands
Visit the Pima County Health Department website for comprehensive information on influenza.
Talk It Out is an initiative out of the College of Education Counseling Program that was created in partnership with the Tucson Unified School District Family Resource Centers. This partnership began from the clearly identified need to provide mental health services to students and families in the community who might otherwise encounter significant barriers to access.
The program provides free mental health counseling services to TUSD students, families, teachers and staff using a practicum training model. Under supervision, master’s level counselors-in-training provide individual, family and group counseling free of charge (no insurance required) to enrolled TUSD students and families in addition to currently employed teachers and staff members. To our knowledge, no other program or organization provides a similar service in the greater Tucson area.
Sessions may be conducted via telehealth or in-person at one of the four Family Resource Centers:
Catalina Family Resource Center
3645 E. Pima
520-232-8684
Palo Verde Family Resource Center
1302 S. Avenida Vega
520-584-7455
Menlo Family Resource Center
1100 W. Fresno
520-225-2172
Southwest Family Resource Center
6855 S. Mark
520-908-3980
Please visit the TUSD website and click on the Talk it Out referral link, talk to a TUSD school counselor, or visit one of the Family Resource Centers to begin the referral process. Talk it Out clients may be struggling socially, emotionally, or academically and do not need to have a specific mental health disorder to qualify.
