The Buzz: Principals Message
The Buzz
Hello Florida Ruffin Ridley School Families and Friends,
As we approach October 7th, we recognize that the ongoing conflict and continuing humanitarian crisis in the Middle East makes this a challenging, emotionally fraught milestone for many in our community.
In this moment and always, we center a culture of care and concern here at Florida Ruffin Ridley. We also ensure that when children and families need help that we activate to provide what is needed. Should this moment bring on additional worry, sadness, or confusion for your child, please let us know. Your child’s classroom teacher, our Guidance team, and Admin team are here to learn from you about what you may need. We plan to support our students in the following ways as needed:
One-on-One Conversations: Our staff will be available for one-on-one conversations with students who may wish to discuss their thoughts, feelings, or concerns in a private setting.
Safe Spaces: We will identify safe spaces where students can take time to process their emotions and find solace.
Classroom Check-Ins: Classroom teachers, as part of our Morning Meeting/Advisory portions of our day, will continue to check-in with students to provide an opportunity for open dialogue and to ensure that everyone feels heard and supported.
Small Group Check-Ins: Where appropriate and if needed, we will offer small group check-ins where students can share their thoughts and experiences with their peers in a safe and supportive environment.
I also take this moment to reiterate that there is no place for anti-Semitism or Islamophobia in our community. We will vigorously confront language or acts that make others feel psychically or physically unsafe and/or directly impact the security of our learning community.
Please be especially mindful of your social media and news intake. Important anniversaries such as this tend to dominate your personal news and social media feeds – AND your child’s social media feed – leading to deeper feelings of worry and helplessness.
Above all, take this moment to commit or recommit to the good and valuable works we can do right here in our own community. When so much help is needed in a part of the world so far away, having a personal drive towards usefulness and compassion can be a buoy in a complicated time.
With gratitude for you all, and this community.
Principal Whitmore

SEPAC Updates
If you are a parent or caregiver of a student who has accommodation needs whether through an IEP, 504, or just generally, I hope you will reach out to me! My name is Tamar Davis Galper, and as the FRR liaison for the Brookline SEPAC (Special Education Parent Advisory Council) this year, I hope to build a stronger network within the FRR community as we all navigate the special education process and seek support in various ways. I can be reached via email at sunshine444@gmail.com. You can also refer to the SEPAC website for further information and resources: https://www.brooklinesepac.org/.

PTO Updates
Costume, Sports & Winter Gear Swap
As we say goodbye to summer and officially welcome fall, it is the perfect time to clean out your students' closets!
We invite you to donate gently used or new costumes, winter outerwear, or sports gear to our annual FRR Costume, Sports, and Winter Gear Swap. Give outgrown clothing another life and take some items that you need, all while supporting the PTO.
Where to Drop Off
Drop-off bins will be placed at the Stedman and Harvard Street school entrances from September 23 through October 7.
Guidelines
- Drop off items in good, usable condition
- Give sports gear a wipe before dropping off, and clap dirt out of cleats
- Drop off costumes, sports gear, and winter clothing only - no other donations, please. Costumes must be recognizable and complete.
- For winter gear, drop off coats, boots, and snow pants only (no hats or mittens)
Attend the Swap: All are welcome to attend the swap! You do not need to donate anything to attend.
- Date: Tuesday, October 8, 2024

Thank you to Laura Perras, FRR mom and volunteer, for running this event again this year!
**LEGO + ROBOTICS = SMART FUN!**
Did you know?
Brookline is becoming a hub for robotics programs from K-12 grade levels. FRR has been expanding the number of teams over the last year, growing from 2 to 5 teams! We would love to see even more teams from FRR form this year.
FIRST Lego League (FLL) is an international non-profit STEM experience for kids of all ages. About 700,000 kids participate worldwide. At the elementary school level, kids build mechanized and coded models that demonstrate their innovative solutions to real world challenges. They present their innovative Lego models at Brookline's celebratory FLL Explore Festival in the spring.
Want to learn more? Start a team? Liz Schneider (FRR mom and FLL coach) is happy to answer any questions and provide mentorship to newly formed teams.
Please note: FLL, FIRST, or Brookline's Explore Festival are not affiliated or sponsored by the Public Schools of Brookline. This is an all-volunteer effort.
