Athens Drive Newsletter
Home of the Jaguars
December 15, 2024
Dear Athens Drive Families,
I hope that all have enjoyed a great weekend. We have much to celebrate as many of our Jaguars were hard at work!
Congratulations to Varsity Cheer on winning the Wake County Championship for the 4th year in a row! Varsity Cheer took 1st place in Small Co-ed, Small Co-ed Game Day, and all around Traditional!
Congratulations to the Athens Drive Marching Band on a great performance at the Cary Christmas Parade.
Congratulations to our Varsity Basketball Teams on wins against East Chapel Hill High School.
Congratulations to this year's Dodgeball Champions, EDM Theta. Our Student Council raised $430 to support our Athens Drive Backpack Buddies program.
Congratulations to our Orchestra students on a great winter concert this past week.
Fall Exams will be held the week of January 13th. School will dismiss for students at 12pm for students during this week. As a reminder, seniors are exempt from all non-state exams if they have an A or B in the class and 10 or fewer absences. There are no exemptions to the senior exam policy.
This week at Athens Drive:
Tuesday: Winter Chorus Concert in the Auditorium at 7pm
Thursday: Winter Band Concert in the Auditorium at 7pm
This is the last week of school prior to the Winter Break. Students return on Monday, January 6th.
Support our Athens Drive Marching Bands by shopping at Dewey's Holiday shop at Waverly Place this season in the new location beside of Whole Foods. The store is open from from 10am-6pm Monday-Saturday and from 12pm-5pm on Sundays through Christmas Eve.
As a reminder, students should only be picked up and dropped off from carpool in the Carpool Loop off of Avent Ferry. Students should not be dropped off or picked up on Athens Drive, in the Special Transportation Loop, or Jaguar Park Drive. This is impeding the flow of traffic and creating an unsafe situation for our pedestrian students and student drivers.
Seniors and Senior Parents: One important key to financial aid and scholarships is the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). FAFSA opens Sunday, December 1st. Both the student and parent need a FSA ID (Federal Student Aid ID). Get those FSA IDs now so you'll be ready December 1st! Need help/have questions: Contact our Financial Aid Advisor, Audrey Lee at Anlee@wcpss.net
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has included a new attendance requirement to be eligible for participation in sports beginning in the Spring. Students must be in attendance at least 85% of days in order to be eligible. This includes any absences, excused and unexcused. (Maximum of 13 absences excused/unexcused per semester.) Other eligibility rules regarding academics remain the same.
Go Jags!

The PTSA is the one organization at the Drive that supports ALL our students and staff. To continue our PTSA programs, we need your financial support. When you donate to the Athens PTSA, you support these programs:
- Classroom supply grants for our staff
- Staff appreciation and hospitality
- Athens Achievers, which is a monthly character recognition program for our students

- Honors Recognition ceremonies in the Spring
- Reflections program, an art competition open to all our students

You can also donate to our Senior Breakfast, which occurs in April.

Carpool & Parking Reminders
Please note that the only carpool entrance is on Avent Ferry Road. Please utilize this designated carpool loop to drop off and pick up students. This loop is one-way only.
Utilizing Jaguar Drive and Athens Drive to drop off and pick up students creates a dangerous situation and impeding the traffic flow of over 500+ new drivers attempting to leave the campus. Please also note, that the other Athens Drive entrance is reserved for Special Transportation only at drop-off and dismissal. It should not be utilized as a carpool drop-off or pick-up area.
We encourage all to utilize the designated carpool lane in the interest of student safety.
Please note that our community partners have begun towing illegally parked student cars that are on their property. Students should not park at the church on Athens Drive, at the Lake Johnson Pool or Nature Center, or at neighboring apartment complexes.
PTSA Updates
Please consider joining the PTSA this school year. The PTSA is a program that supports the entire staff and students.
