Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 12th April 2024
Guide Dogs in Year 3
Courageous Advocacy for Guide Dogs
Year 3 had some very important and exciting visitors today, Newton and Reed who are trainee guide dogs. Newton is just at the start of his guide dog journey at only 7 weeks old and Reed, at 8 months old, is tackling obstacles such as stairs and lifts in his training. Their puppy raisers Jeni and Peter explained how all the different ways in which the dogs were trained and the obstacles they have to overcome to help their new owner with daily tasks. Jeni explained that it costs over £80,000 to train a guide dog which will pay for their vet bills, food and care throughout their lives. The children were brilliantly respectful to Newton and Reed and created a calm environment so the puppies would feel at ease.
Year 3 are courageous advocates for Guide Dogs and are working to raise awareness of the work they do. They will be taking part in activities to raise money for the charity.
Ancient Civilisations in Year 5
Hands on History!
In Year 5 on Wednesday the children had a brilliant start to their history topic on Ancient Islamic Civilisations. John from 'Hands on History' was very knowledgeable and planned a whole range of interesting activities. He brought in lots of artefacts which the children handled, sketched and discussed just like archeologists to find out more about the Golden Age. They also learnt about ancient medicines and practised calligraphy on a leather keyring the children got to keep as a souvenir. They spent much of the afternoon trying on the armour and looking at weapons used in battles.
Breakfast Natters
Breakfast Natters
The governors along with the Cathedral are holding a get together on Thursday 16th April, straight after drop off, in the school hall.
As well as tea and coffee, there is bound to be some home baking on offer, we are sure! Under school age children are welcome too, so please do drop in for a chat.
Everyone is very welcome.
Year 4 Lights
Designing Night Lights
Year 4 have looked at electricity in science lessons. They thought about and investigated sources of electricity and electrical circuits. Then in DT lessons, they designed and made a night light. The children carefully considered who the nightlight should be for and how it would appeal to the user's interests as well as meeting their needs. Using a range of recycled materials, the children got to work and made night lights adapting them as they worked to ensure they were fit for purpose. When they were finished, they tested them in the cupboard to see how bright they were.
Oceans in Year 1
Exploring the Oceans in Year 1
We explored the five oceans of the world by reading information about each ocean and looking at where they are on a map. We then made models of the different oceans thinking carefully about what types of sea creatures or other features we might find in or around them.
Compassion
This term we are looking at the value of Compassion. The children have been thinking about what it means to be compassionate and how we can show the value through our behaviours and actions.
Across the classes the children have been exploring different ways that they can support and champion organisations to be caring and compassionate. Over the term children will be raising funds and taking action for the causes that they are advocates for.

Amazing Acts Quiz Winners
Last term the children in Year 5 and Year 6 visited Bethel to take part in an 'Amazing Acts' workshop. At the end of the session the children completed a quiz about what they had learnt. The children with the highest scores received prizes, which we presented in our Celebration Worship today. Bethel Church also kindly gifted a story book Bible for Year 5 and Year 6 and they gave every child who took part in the workshop an 'Amazing Acts' pencil.
School Updates
Welcome back to the summer term. The children have settled quickly back into their learning and are excited about the range of activities and experiences that we have planned for the term.
Be on time at Quarter to Nine
Just a reminder that doors open at 8.45am each morning. Children access learning very quickly in the morning. Being 5-10 minutes late each day can reduce learning time by up to 50 minutes a week which would be a whole of week of learning over a year.
PE Kits
It is great if PE kits are kept in school for the week so that chidlren have access to relevant kit should they need it. Indoor/summer PE kit should include black shorts and a white t-shirt. Children can also bring grey joggers and their green hoody for outdoors when the weather is cooler.
Picking up and Dropping Off
We have updated our polity and procedures for picking up and dropping off. Do take time to read the document which can be accessed by clicking the link below.
