Health Chocolate Milkshakes?
As part of a stimulating Google Classroom discussion with the 3rd grade about National Chocolate Milkshake Day, I proposed the idea of a healthy chocolate milkshake. Finding healthy alternatives to traditional sweet treats can be a great way to satisfy cravings without the same negative impacts on our diet, weight, energy, nutrition, fat intake, cholesterol, and other health concerns.
What does a healthy milkshake consist of? First of all, it depends on your own likes, dislikes, available ingredients, creativity and healthy status.
It is generally recommended to consume milkshakes in moderation, as they can be high in calories, sugar, and fat. However, if you are looking for a healthier option, there are a few things you can consider:
- Choose a lower-calorie base: Instead of using ice cream as a base, you can use frozen yogurt, skim milk, or even silken tofu.
- Add in healthy mix-ins: Try adding fresh or frozen fruit, such as berries or bananas, to add flavor and nutrition to your milkshake.
- Limit added sugars: If you are using a flavored base, such as flavored yogurt or ice cream, be sure to check the label for added sugars. You can also try using a natural sweetener, such as honey or maple syrup, instead of regular sugar.
- Use healthy toppings: Instead of whipped cream and chocolate sauce, try topping your milkshake with sliced fruit or a sprinkle of nuts for added crunch and nutrition.
Overall, the healthiest milkshake will depend on your specific dietary needs and preferences. It may be helpful to speak with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian for personalized advice.
School Bus Safety
School is in session, but do you know about the danger zone? The danger zone is the area around a school bus where visibility is limited, and safety can become an issue. The safety zone includes 10 feet around the back and sides of the school bus, and 30 feet in front of the school bus. Passing vehicles on the side with the stop arm can pose a threat, so always be aware of your surroundings while unloading. There is a danger for smaller students who cross in front of or behind the school bus, as this is a limited visibility area. Ensure the driver knows they are crossing the road prior to doing so. If they can see the driver, the driver can see them. Lastly, if something is dropped while exiting the bus, DO NOT pick it up until the bus has pulled away or the driver is alerted. If a child bends down to secure an item under or around the bus, they will fall out of visibility and can potentially be harmed. Teach your students and children about the danger zone as well as the safety zone (depicted in the image). Help us keep our precious cargo safe and have a great school year!

Every Day Matters- Attendance
Students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. This relationship between attendance and achievement may appear early in a child's school career. A recent study looking at young children found that absenteeism in kindergarten was associated with negative first grade outcomes such as greater absenteeism in subsequent years and lower achievement in reading, math, and general knowledge
Chronic Absenteeism is defined by the U.S. Department of Education as missing 15 days or more a year. If your child reaches 18 or more absences, it then has to be reported to the State of New Jersey for our School Performance Reports.

NJ HEALTH INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS
In 2008, P.L. 2008, Chapter 38 was signed into law and mandates that all children age 18 and under have health insurance. All relevant state agencies continue to engage in outreach strategies to help families meet this requirement.
NJ FamilyCare is a federal and state funded health insurance program created to help New Jersey's uninsured children and certain low-income parents and guardians to have affordable health coverage. It is not a welfare program. NJ FamilyCare is for families who do not have available or affordable employer insurance, and cannot afford to pay the high cost of private health insurance.
