A Message from the Administrative Team
Dear WJHS Families,
I (Nicole) wanted to share some news. It has been wonderful working with you all during this school year to help lead a school that the Wilmette community can be proud of. I have enjoyed getting to know your students, from the informal hall conversations to the more formal class observations of their work. Creating schools where all students can succeed has always been an important pillar in my educational career. Unfortunately, though, we sometimes find ourselves in a place where career must take a backseat. With my husbands' work picking up and with my kids really getting into elementary school, I have decided to leave the AP position after this school year. It was never in my plans to leave after only a year, but what do people say about the best laid plans? I am not sure where my path will lead me, but I know that my kids will be front and center, at least for awhile. That being said, I look forward to working with you all during these last few months.
Best,
Nicole Ryan, 8th Grade Level Administrator
A message from the WJHS Student Council:
Student Council is proud to partner with a student at New Trier High School enrolled in a leadership and philanthropy class called Leading with Heart. It is a branch of A Giving Heart Foundation that has partnered with Lurie Children's Hospital. Their mission is to eliminate invasive treatments for kids with congenital and structural heart disease. The funds they raise will help provide the resources necessary to purchase the equipment and care to eliminate or reduce the need for open heart surgery. We are partnering with an organization called GotSneakers? Which reuses and recycles sneakers and, in return, donates money to the chosen organization A Giving Heart Foundation.
Due to a wonderfully overwhelming response of donations, we are extending the donation window for WJHS community members to drop off their used or gently used sneakers for this cause. A collection bin for sneakers will be set up in the front lobby at WJHS through Friday, May 3rd. Students can drop off their sneaker donations themselves or parents can drop off sneaker donations at the Front Office. Go Wolves!
Have a great weekend!
Best,
Kate, Eric and Nicole
Parent Input Form Due Monday, April 29th
Although we feel confident in our ability to appropriately place your child successfully, we do welcome parent input. If you feel that extraordinary factors exist that the school should be aware of, please answer the questions using the link HERE and submit this form by April 29th. These factors might include your child's special learning needs and social-emotional development. Please do not include teacher requests, as every child’s experience with a teacher is unique.
Science Olympiad Season Wraps with Success!
The Wilmette Junior High concluded their season this past weekend at the University of Illinois in the State Competition. The Wolves finished 11th out of the 46 schools that qualified. The top performers received medals for 5th in Optics. Three students were 3rd in Experimental Design. Two students placed 5th in Disease Detectives and two students were 4th in Tower. Two more students placed 5th in Solar Power. However, the Wolves fell short of reaching their goal of being in the top ten in the state. The season was highlighted by winning the Crown Point Invitational in January and Regional Champions in March. Mr. Nelson is proud of the season's success and is fortunate to have worked with such talented and hardworking students. Mr. Nelson attributes the success of the season to all the support from the parents.
WJHS Symphonic Band Selected to Perform at SuperState Festival
The Wilmette Junior High School Symphonic Band has been invited to participate in the prestigious Illinois SuperState Concert Band Festival next month. The festival, which celebrates the legacy and tradition of great music-making by middle school/junior high and high school bands throughout the state of Illinois, will take place on May 3-4 at the world-renowned Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The WJHS Ensemble is one of just seven middle school/junior high bands chosen to perform. Congratulations!
Tech Tidbit
Building on what Ms. Forti shared last week, I thought I would share a few ways that students worked with Artificial Intelligence, or more specifically Generative AI, this year. Some of the Photography classes tested out the Generative Fill feature in Photoshop to make their photographs take on fantastical new forms. Whether the base photo was taken at the beach, or here at school, seeing the transformations and creativity was amazing. Students in some Writing classes also dabbled with the GenAI tools from the labs at Google. This video highlights how GenAI can be designed to enhance our creativity, rather than simply for production purposes. The students used these tools to inspire their writing.

April SEL
Beginning April 22 and running through May 3, students in grades 5-8 will be participating in the Panorama MESH (Mindsets, Essential Skills and Habits) assessment of social-emotional competencies and school environment. The MESH is comprised of a series of questions that cover the areas of Self-Management, Social Awareness, and Emotion Regulation. It also looks at Supportive Relationships at school, School Safety, Sense of Belonging, and Valuing of School.
This assessment aligns with the SEL competencies taught using our Responsive Classroom curricular materials, and results from the assessments are used to help us as we continue to gauge the effectiveness of our social-emotional supports and programming in the district. For more information about the social-emotional objectives at your child’s grade level, and other general information about SEL in District 39, please visit the D39 Social Emotional Learning Website.
