High Impact Instruction - Formative Assessment
Monitoring Progress and Adapting Teaching
Formative Assessment Defined:
Frequent, interactive assessments of students' progress and understanding of the learning target. Used to identify learning needs and adjust instruction appropriately.
Formative Assessment increases student engagement and provides a starting point for meaningful learning adjustments. Formative Assessment also provides feedback to students regarding where they are in their learning of the content.
Assessment for Learning
Formative Assessment: Monitoring Students' Progress Towards Mastery
The goal of formative assessment is to gather information that can be used to improve instruction and student learning. Formative assessments are generally low stakes, which means that they have low or no point value
Formative Assessment can look like:
- Response Cards
- Clickers
- Paraphrasing
- Written Response
Formative Assessment as Feedback
Both formative assessment and formative feedback provide students with information regarding progress on their learning. Formative feedback uses teacher questioning practices and dialogue to serve as informal assessments. The creation of questions to assess student progress toward identified learning goals is an important component of formative assessment. Questioning, dialogue, and feedback can be executed both verbally and written responses.
When effectively implemented formative assessment should prove to be beneficial for both the students and the teacher.
