Civic Action Town Hall
“Your voices matter,” said State Representative Natalie Blais. “Make your voices heard,” added Buz Eisenberg, Ashfield’s Town Moderator.
These were some of the sights and sounds at Monday’s Civic Action Town Hall, where Grade 8 and 10 Civics students had the chance to speak directly with local and state elected officials to deepen their understanding of the workings of local and state government.
Students shared their ideas and questions about the Civic Action Projects they’ve been developing—touching on everything from rural school funding to affordable housing to food deserts and youth employment programs—and students reported feeling more energized to get working on these pressing issues, knowing that these representatives are listening and responding to their concerns!
Grade 8 and 10 took part in an in-house Civic Action field trip
State Representative Natalie Blais spoke to students about civic engagement and making change
Panelists also had the chance to look at student Civic Action projects

Happy almost April! There are a multitude of activities happening between now and the end of the year. Third quarter will be finished this coming week - I can’t believe it!
Please make sure to check MCAS and AP schedules carefully. Students should be in their testing rooms on time ready to go.
We enjoy being outside at lunch time! This time of year, an extra pair of socks and pants are a good thing to have on hand at school as the fields are very wet.

Annual Celebration of Learning, March 27, 2024, 4-6pm
We were so glad to welcome many families and community members into Mohawk Trail Regional on the evening of March 27th for the annual Celebration of Learning. Thanks to those of you who joined us at this event.
We were super excited to have a number of elementary school families specifically visit the middle school wing, and beyond. Guests were marveling at the art and enjoyed the athletic happenings in the little gym. There was a steady stream in the big gym where it looked like guests were stopping and talking, not simply moving through the space. Music floated out of the auditorium, drawing people in. The library was bustling with panel attendees and book fair browsers. And the foyer was continuously boisterous with conversation. MTRS staff, students, and volunteers created an environment in which guests could envision, believe, and be very present in who we are and what we do.
Perks included free dinner from Foxtown Diner and desserts from local bakeries, the chance to win raffle prizes, and a book giveaway - all made possible thanks to the efforts of the Mary Lyon Foundation. It was a great night!
April dates with the Sustainability Project
The BERK12 consulting team needs your feedback for a study about the future of the
Mohawk Trail and Hawlemont Regional School Districts. Families (parents, caregivers,
students, grandparents, alumni, others) and community members are strongly encouraged
to attend one of four upcoming COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SESSIONS. BERK12 will provide a short overview of the project plan and an opportunity for you to share insights and
perspectives about the districts and schools. Come to one of the sessions if you:
are concerned about declining enrollment in the Mohawk Trail and Hawlemont districts
want to share your thoughts about the strengths and challenges of the schools
have kids in the schools and want to help shape the quality of their education
are a community member who cares about high quality, cost-effective education
want to help form a vision for where the districts should be in 10 years
See the full meetings calendar here. Social media profiles may be found on Facebook and Instagram and the project website and further information may be found here: 2Districts8Towns.org. Contact Mary Nash with questions at msnash3@gmail.com.
Spring sports are underway!
Whether it’s your local elementary baseball or softball team, or the fuller Mohawk Trail Regional sports schedule, we invite you to cheer on your hometown team!
The MTRS sport schedule may be found here: https://arbiterlive.com/ Once there, look for the “Find Schedules Now” search box and type in “Mohawk Trail Regional.” The search results will return a list and MT should be at the top, noting Greg Lilly as the athletic director. Click on “Mohawk Trail Regional School” to see the teams to choose from.
The elementary baseball schedules may be a little tougher to pin down but if you see a game going at Cricket Field in Buckland or at one of the elementary schools, stop by to show your support.
Teaching and Learning
MCAS Testing
Grade 10 ELA MCAS took place earlier this week and I wanted to remind everyone about MCAS testing in general. This information has previously been shared in the weekly newsletter.
MCAS tests are required by state and federal law and are an important tool to promote student success and educational equity. Passing MCAS in grade 10 is a graduation requirements in Massachusetts. Students educated with Massachusetts public funds are required by federal laws and the 1993 Massachusetts Education Reform Law, state law M. G. L. Chapter 69, section 1I, to participate in statewide testing.
Why does testing matter?
Before education reform and statewide testing in the 1990s, Massachusetts students too often graduated from high school without the basic reading and math skills needed to succeed in life.
Today, Massachusetts students are #1 in the country in reading and math. So how did this happen? In the early '90s, the state passed a law that included high learning standards, consistent funding, more choices for families, and accountability for how well students are being served. Part of that act included statewide assessments to make sure schools are reaching all students.
When scores show students are not meeting basic learning standards, schools and districts can adjust instruction to address those areas. In addition, parents and the public can ask questions and ensure educators are taking action.
Statewide testing helps parents check their child's and school's progress and lets taxpayers know if they are getting a good return on the tax money they invest in schools.
Statewide assessments also help the state know where to focus its efforts, whether that be on individual struggling schools or wide subject areas, like early reading or middle school math. Without testing, those needs would remain hidden.
State test scores are just one piece of a student's academic picture, but they are important information.
MCAS participation rate also impacts a the rating of a school. Please see our latest district and school report card.
Who will test?
High school students in the class of 2026 (10th graders) must take and pass the MCAS tests in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics to earn a high school diploma, in addition to meeting local requirements. Students in the class of 2027 (9th graders) will take tests in ELA and mathematics next year, and they are also required to take and pass a test in science and technology/engineering (they will take or have already taken the science test this year). Students will have opportunities to retest if they do not pass.
The high school MCAS tests also provide the opportunity for students to qualify for several state awards. These include the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship and the Stanley Z. Koplik Certificate of Mastery.
In addition, MCAS test results will:
give information about areas of learning that the pandemic has most impacted,
provide important data on which students, schools, and districts have been most affected by pandemic-related changes in schooling, and
improve understanding of your child’s knowledge and skills in relation to the state’s learning standards, so that we can provide the best system of support and instruction in future years
Schedule & Parent Information
Please be aware of the schedule. It can be found, HERE
For parents/guardians who are interested in learning more about the tests themselves, DESE has put together a number of useful resources here. Student expectations during testing are explained here.
Grade Level and Tests
- Grade 10 - ELA and MATH & SCIENCE (taken in G9) - Computer-Based Testing (CBT)
- Grade 8 - ELA, MATH, Science & Civics Field Test CBT
- Grade 7 - ELA & MATH CBT
Information about the new Grade 8 Civics field test this year
In addition to MCAS tests in English language arts, mathematics, and science, your child will also participate in an MCAS grade 8 civics field test.
In order to administer a new grade 8 civics test in the future, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education must try out new test questions before the test becomes operational and scores can provided to parents, schools, and districts. Your child’s participation is important and allows the state to build a valid and reliable test. It is important that all selected students participate in the field test to ensure a representative sample of students from across the state.
Staff will be reviewing expectations and supporting students with the testing process in preparation for the respective tests later in the term. This includes familiarity with the testing technology and looking at past papers.
Chromebooks
Students in grade 7 will use the devices in their classrooms. Grade 8-10 will use their school issued Chromebooks. A limited number of spare devices will be available for student use on the day of the test.
Day of the test
Please make sure that students have slept well prior to coming to school. Breakfast will continue to be available for all students at MTRS.
After Testing
The vast majority of tests are scheduled from 8 - 10 am. This is followed by a lunch break. Students are expected to remain in school for the remainder of the day. It is important that students are able to take advantage of what little time remains in person for the rest of the year. Staff will adjust lessons to account for students taking a test earlier in the day.
Please email or call your student’s counselor if you have any questions or concerns.

Art Teens
Spring session starts soon!
ARTeens is a pay-what-you-can after school program for teens that love to make art! Spring session begins April 23rd. Online applications due April 12th or until the program is full.
ARTeens is a weekly after school program at The Art Garden in Shelburne Falls open to middle and high school teens (ages 12-19) who are interested in making art. Our spring sessions are offered on either Tuesdays or Thursdays. Applicants choose which day works best for their schedules. The sessions run for seven weeks starting the week of April 23rd and ending with an area wide teen art exhibit on June 8th.
The program runs from after school until 6pm. The Art Garden provides healthy snacks, a wide variety of art supplies, demonstrations of different art techniques or materials, exposure to contemporary artists, weekly art prompts, and time for teens to explore their own ideas.
ARTeens is facilitated by artists Jane Beatrice Wegscheider and Laura Iveson. Teens cultivate an art practice in The Art Garden’s supportive, intergenerational studio with an emphasis on personal responsibility and self-direction. Teens explore and critique the world around them, develop their own voices, and share their ideas. ARTeens offers a sense of community while nurturing uniqueness and engagement in a diverse and non-judgmental group.
The ARTeens program is made possible, in part, by a YouthReach grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The program's full cost is $350 for the 7 week session, but it is a pay-what-you-can program. We don't require any income qualifiers and no one is ever turned away due to lack of funds. Your family decides what amount is right for them but are expected to contribute something because every contribution helps make the program possible.
Many teens participate in multiple sessions for many years and have opportunities to work as assistants or mentors in other Art Garden programs or volunteer in the Art Garden’s community art events.
Applications are available online at https://www.theartgarden.org/for-teens
For more information go to theartgarden.org.
Athletics
Welcome back Warrior fans! The spring athletic season is underway, and we have a very exciting campaign ahead of us! With the highest participation rates for any sports season at Mohawk Trail in over five years, our teams are overflowing with athletes! While the weather for the most part has been cooperative, we are still a little ways away from being able to compete on our fields! However, when that time does come, you can find all of our spring sports schedules at ARBITER LIVE!
ZOAR OUTDOOR OFFERING AFTER SCHOOL KAYAK PROGRAM!
Our friends at Zoar Outdoor are again offering an after school kayaking program that will run from April 4th through May 23rd! This program is open to all students in grades 7 through 12. There is a cost associated with the program, but Zoar is generously offering Mohawk Trail students up to four full scholarships for the five week adventure. Please reach out to Mohawk Trail Athletic Director Greg Lilly at glillyAD@mtrsd.org if you have any questions or are interested in participating in the program.

Notes from the Nurse
Covid-19 updates...
Dear parents/guardians;
Throughout the Covid-19 Pandemic, our districts have followed the guidelines set forth to us by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the MA Department of Public Health (MDPG), and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), in order to keep our school community safe and minimize the spread of illness.
At the beginning of March, the CDC announced new guidelines which no longer required a full five days of isolation following a positive Covid-19 case but continued to offer guidelines in order to mitigate the spread of illness. Earlier this week, MDPH and DESE officially updated their guidelines as well, including guidelines for schools.
What this means for you:
New symptoms of a respiratory virus
For a fever, or moderate to severe sore throat, cough, or a runny/stuffy nose, stay home and stay away from others in your household and/or mask when you need to be around them.
Highly encouraged to test for Covid-19 and flu
May return to normal activities if fever free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medicines AND other symptoms are improving.
Use good cough/sneeze etiquette as well as washing hands frequently.
Test positive for a respiratory virus with no symptoms or very mild symptoms
For at least the first 5 days, take these extra precautions:
Avoid crowded indoor spaces. Wear a mask anytime indoors and around other people.
Use good cough/sneeze etiquette as well as washing hands frequently with soap and water (preferred) or hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
Avoid spending time with people who are at increased risk for severe disease.
Although not required, choosing to stay home for about 72 hours may help reduce the chances that you spread the virus to others.
To read the full recommendations you can use this link: MDPH respiratory viruses guidelines
Please email with any questions or concerns to dweber@mtrsd.org

Donna Weber, MSN, BSN, RN
