Note from our Principal
Exley Family,
We are so excited that we will be welcoming back all our fabulous students and their families in a few weeks. The hallways and classrooms have been way too quiet. We can’t wait to fill them with excitement and learning once again. This year our theme is Happy Campers. We strive to create a school where our students want to be and are always happy to come to school. We will be entering year two of our Exley Ohana....6 Houses, One Family. This was started last year and was created around Ron Clark’s House system. All new students will be placed in a house and all returning students will remain in the same house as last year. We are excited that our JEE PTA will be offering an Exley spirit shirt that can be purchased in your child’s house color. We hope students will wear these on house party days as well as on spirit Fridays.
What is the House System?
The house system is based on an idea adopted from Ron Clark Academy and is a way to give students the opportunity to connect with students from pre-k to fifth grade that they may not normally have a chance to interact with. Our hope and desire is that this will help students gain more friendships and create a family-like culture at our school. With over 1000 students on our campus, this creates smaller family units across our student body.
Outcomes we noticed from year one of Houses:
- Unity
- A positive change of culture
- A school that seems smaller and more personal
- Opportunities for students to connect across all grade levels
- A way to promote and encourage core character traits
- A sense of Exley pride and school spirit
Please read our news carefully for all the details for the start of the school year. Can’t wait to see all the smiling faces and hear about summer fun at our Meet the Teacher night.

Meet the Teacher
Meet the Teacher Night
Grades 1st to 5th
ASIP/ECAP/YCAP
When: Monday, Aug. 12
5:00-6:30 PM
We will end promptly at 6:30 so get here early! J
Where: Your child’s classroom. Start in the classroom of your YOUNGEST child.
Don’t know your teacher? Look on HAC to find the teacher name. This will save you from having to stand in another line in the cafeteria.
What to bring: School Supplies. For those who pre-ordered school supplies, they will be in your child’s classroom
Prior to coming: Log onto HAC any time after August 8th to see who your child’s teacher will be for the 19-20 school year. Please take time to look this information up so that you will be able to go straight to the classroom for Elementary Meet the Teacher night on August 12th. This will keep you from standing in another long line to find out the teacher’s name. Your child’s HAC information was sent home in their final report card. You will need this information to log into HAC. Please note we cannot give out this HAC information over the phone due to privacy issues. If you have lost this information, you must come up to the school with picture ID. We will not being able to hand out HAC information on Meet the Teacher night.
Other things to do:
Dismissal tag: We ask that all families get a dismissal tag. This will be used for different things including car rider pick-up, after school activities, pre-k to first grade walkers, and at other times. Please go to the classroom for your youngest child first to get this tag number. This will be the number for all your children at JEE.
Purchase Planner: Stop by the cafeteria to purchase your child’s planner for $3. All students 3rd-5th grade are required to have a KISD planner. If you prefer, you may send $3 cash the first day to school with your child in an envelope marked “planner” and your child’s name and we will get the planner to your child. Beginning this year first and second grade students will no longer need the planner.

After School Programs offered at JEE: Several of our programs will have information tables set up in the gym for you to check out.
PTA Memberships/Volunteer information: Want to be a part of our fabulous PTA? Information will be in the Gym.
JEE Spirit Wear: Fridays are spirit days at JEE. All are encouraged to wear a JEE each Friday. Stop by the spirit wear table in the Gym to purchase your tonight. This year there will also be a shirt for sale that you can order in your child’s house color. Your child’s house color will remain the same as last year.
Bus Map: Need to know what bus your child will ride? Bus route maps posted outside the gym (by trophy case) and down in the kindergarten/5th grade hallway. You may also visit http://www.katyisd.org and click on bus schedule from home and find the bus number prior to meet the teacher. Bring the number with you so you can let the teacher know. Bus numbers can change from year to year, so always verify each year.

Returning Students
RETURNING STUDENTS UPDATE
Exley Parents,
You have received (or will soon receive) an email for KISD regarding our annual student update. This email will contain a snap code that will direct you to the link to update your RETURNING students records for the '19-'20 school year.
There will be TWO links in this email. Please scroll down through the whole email. Please click on the TOP link - for returning students. Do NOT do the New Student Registration. If you click the wrong link and the page says NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION - please exit and try again.
Many of our parents have completed this in the new student link and we are having to delete these records. If you are one of these parents that completed a New Student Registration, please go back to the email and do the RETURNING STUDENT UPDATE as soon as possible.
Thanks!

Transportation Update
Reminders for Start of School
A few reminders for the start of school:
Traffic will be heavy on the first day of school and parking is limited. Please plan accordingly.
Parents, you will be able to walk your student to class for the first 3 days. Please say a quick goodbye once getting to the classroom. Doors will open at 7:40. Remember students must be in class by 8:00.
Please remember that the district asks for no lunch visitors for the first 2 weeks of school while the students are getting accustomed to the lunchtime routine.
Breakfast Times
Car riders/Walkers/Bike Riders and Breakfast
If your child is a car rider, biker, or walker in the morning and you want them to eat the school breakfast, please drop them off at 7:40 so that they have time to eat and make it to class by 8:00. Car Riders/Walkers/Bike Riders arriving to the cafeteria line after 7:55 will not be able to purchase a breakfast since they will not have time to eat and make it to class by the tardy bell.
Lunch Visitors
We just want to remind you that teachers need some time to establish routines with their students, so we will not be having lunch visitors until Aug. 28th. We appreciate your support.
Note to Parents
Parents,
We are requesting that beginning the first day of school you allow your child to go home their normal way. We ask that you do not do a different way home for the first day. This becomes very confusing for teachers and students as we learn our dismissal routine. Our top priority is to get all students home the right way and safely. Your help with this is greatly appreciated!
There are a few other ways you can really help us make dismissal run faster, safer, and more efficiently. Please, whenever possible, keep your child’s dismissal routine consistent. We ask that you don’t have different ways home (like MWF car rider and TTH walker). Again, this is hard for students and teachers to keep up with, especially when we have a substitute.
For changes of transportation, we ask that you only change in cases of emergencies or when there is a need due to an appointment (like a doctor appointment). At the end of the year last year we were receiving about 40 changes of transportation a day. This is very time consuming for our front office and confusing for the children. Again, we greatly appreciate your help with this.
Student Deliveries
Deliveries are only made at 10am and 2pm. This includes homework, birthday treats, lunches, backpacks and snacks. These may be dropped off to the cart in the front lobby. Label the item with the child’s name, grade and teacher. Parents bringing in lunch after 10am delivery will need to Raptor in and take the lunch down to the lunch table outside the cafeteria. It is the responsibility of the child to pick up the lunch. Every effort must be made to have lunches dropped off prior to the 10am delivery. Balloons, flowers, and other things that cause distractions in the classroom will not be delivered.
Dress Code
As you shop for school clothes, please keep our district dress code in mind. According to Katy ISD policy, shorts are to be no shorter than mid-thigh and may not be split or fringed at the hem or seams. Students wearing shorts that are too short or fringed will be calling home for a change of clothing. Please remember that tank tops, see-through shirts or blouses, midriff tops or clothing with spaghetti straps are not acceptable for school wear unless worn under other clothing. Please visit the KISD website for the full dress code. http://www.katyisd.org/Documents/Discipline%20Management%20Plan.pdf
Free and Reduced Meals
The online application will be available beginning on or after Aug. 1. Contact the Nutrition and Food Service Office at 281-396-6240 with questions or concerns. Link to application: https://www.schoolcafe.com/katyisd
