STATE LETTER GRADE APPEALS UPDATE
I wanted to update you regarding the recent letter grades released by the Arizona Department of Education last Friday. As you may have seen, Liberty received a "B" based on last year's performance data. In previous years, Liberty has maintained an "A", so this drop to a "B" is disappointing. Recently, the State Board of Education updated business rules in how letter grades are calculated which impacted Liberty. We are in the process of appealing to the State Board of Education and will keep you apprised of the outcome.
Nevertheless, we have a mindset of continuous improvement at Liberty Elementary. This year, we are focused on building pathways of success for our primary students. This includes decreasing the number of K-3 grade students in need of phonemic and early reading skills support and increasing passing proficiency of our students in 3rd grade. All K-6 students will continue to receive a robust learning experience in all subjects using evidence based curriculum. Students in need will be provided additional support through small group instruction.
While state letter grades are important, it's also important to remember that there are multiple factors that define a school's success, including academic growth, attendance, school culture and overall student and family engagement. We know that Liberty is an “A” school, and while the drop in our grade is disappointing, it does not diminish the hard work our teachers, staff, and students put in each day.
We appreciate your ongoing support of our school community. Together, we can continue to partner in ensuring our students are empowered for a lifetime of success. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions.

SOCIAL WORKER NEWS
Hello families,
As we wrap up the discussion related to the Ted Talk by Dr. Albano I would like to identify another piece of information that resonated with me. The concept of working with children to help them confront fears and problem solve, then letting them take the action they have identified independent of adult involvement. Doing this will allow them to develop the “internal skills” to overcome uncomfortable situations. Helping them develop the “belief in oneself so they can overcome challenging situations.” If we are always solving problems for them or intervening we may be preventing them from building confidence in themselves and building the skills that will benefit them in their adolescence and adulthood.
