March is Reading Month
As March comes to a close, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated in making March is Reading Month a resounding success! Throughout the month, our students dove into the wonderful world of literature, embracing the joy of reading through a myriad of engaging activities and events.
📖 Exploring New Worlds: Our dedicated educators went above and beyond to ignite the love for reading in our students' hearts. They organized innovative classroom activities, book-themed assemblies, and creative reading challenges, sparking imaginations and fostering a lifelong passion for learning.
🎉 Special Guest Readers: One of the highlights of March is Reading Month was the presence of our incredible guest readers! We were honored to welcome parents, community leaders, and even some surprise celebrity guests who shared their favorite stories and imparted words of wisdom to our eager young minds. Their presence added an extra layer of excitement and inspiration to our reading festivities.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our students, educators, families, and community members for their unwavering support and enthusiasm during March is Reading Month. Let's continue to prioritize reading as a fundamental pillar of education, nurturing curious minds and nurturing a love for learning in every child.

Employee and Partner of the Month (March)
We are delighted to recognize Ms. Ashley Lockridge as our Employee of the Month for March 2024. As a fourth-grade teacher at Adler Elementary, she has exemplified outstanding support and teamwork. Ms. Lockridge ensures both students and teachers feel supported by sharing lesson plans, teaching additional classes, managing the school’s social media, and handling essential assessments with exceptional dedication.
We are proud to celebrate Ms. Rosetta Davis, affectionately known as Ms. Rose, as our Partner of the Month for March 2024. She serves as the Food Service Manager at Vandenberg World Cultures Academy. With a eight nominations to her name, Mrs. Rose’s dedication shines brightly in every aspect of her work. She consistently exceeds expectations, ensuring every meal she oversees is both delicious and nutritionally sound.

Mighty MacArthur Academic Games Team
Congratulations to the Mighty MacArthur Academic Games Team!
The team attended their first Super Tournament Competition earlier this month. With a lot of hard work the scholars walked away with several medals and trophies! The team was also recognized at the March 12th Board of Education meeting.
Excellent job Coach Wilson for his time and commitment with preparing all the team members!

SPS Winter Writing Contest
Attention Southfield Students and Parents! Do you have the “write” stuff to win an essay contest and a cool prize? The Southfield Public Schools Literacy Team is sponsoring a winter writing contest! The winter writing contest will take place now through the month of March. Please see the contest guidelines below:
Writing Topic: Who is your hero and why?
Due Date: All entries must be submitted using the Google Form by Friday, April 5, 2024 (end of school day).
Prizes: A winner will be selected from each grade level (Kindergarten through twelfth grade). Each grade-level winner will receive a Boogie Board Digital Writing Tablet! Additionally, all grade-level winners will have their names entered into a drawing for an Amazon Kindle! Winning entries will be posted on the District website unless specified otherwise upon submission.
Competition Guidelines:
- Eligible students must be currently enrolled in Southfield Public School
- One entry per student
- There is no minimum or maximum word count or length for submissions. However, the suggested lengths are:
- K-1: One sentence to one complete paragraph and a supporting picture
- 2-3: Two to three complete paragraphs
- 4-5: Four to five complete paragraphs
- 6-12: 500-2000 words
4. Submission must be the student’s own original work
5. Submissions must be typed and double-spaced (K-1 students can scan their handwritten copies). Save your essay as a PDF to prepare it for submission

MI Parent/Guardian Survey
Our district will be participating in the pilot testing of a new survey called the MI Parent/Guardian Perception Survey on March 12-March 29. Topics covered in the survey fall into five categories: Interpersonal Relationships, Parent Involvement & Support, Parental Satisfaction, School Climate, and Belonging.
The Parent/Guardian Perception Survey can be completed online using a computer, tablet or mobile device. The anonymous survey is designed to protect your privacy and the privacy of your student(s). The survey has under 50 questions and is expected to take approximately 10 minutes or less to complete.
While participation is voluntary, we encourage all parents/guardians to take part in the survey, as we hope to gather meaningful information about your experiences. The active link for the survey is below.

April Board of Education Meeting Date Change
The April Board of Education meeting that was scheduled for April 9th has been changed to April 10, 2024, starting at 7 pm.
