Edgewood Earns WI 'School of Character' Award
During the February 13th Committee of the Whole Meeting, the School Board recognized that Edgewood Elementary School is a 2017 recipient of the Wisconsin School of Character Award. Edgewood is only one of two state elementary schools this year to win this award, presented by the WI Character Education Partnership (WCEP).
Schools apply for the award and winners are selected for strong implementation of character education in their schools based on the ‘Eleven Principles of Effective Character Education’ in accordance with the NSOC (National Schools of Character) guidelines.
The photo is from when the original announcement was made to staff and students at an all-school assembly on Friday, January 20, 2017. The school will be receiving a banner to hang on the outside of the building and is now eligible for consideration of the same award at the national level.
Schools Receive Generous Donations from local Businesses
- The Board approved a $5,000 grant on behalf of Maple Grove Elementary School from Lowe’s. The 'Hardware Toolbox for Education Grant' will help improve the school's community garden and compost program, which began during the 2015-16 school year, by helping to fund construction of a garden shed, improve soil conditions, purchase tools and equipment to allow the activities to continue into the future. Students that participate in the garden will have an opportunity to attend a field trip to a large scale urban garden located in the city of Milwaukee. Maple Grove teacher, Mr. Chris Mlinar, applied for this grant and is overseeing the Maple Grove Community Garden and Compost project, and it would not have moved forward without his leadership.
- The Board approved two donations from new Greenfield retailer Bob’s Discount Furniture,of $2,500.00 each to Edgewood Elementary and Greenfield High School as a part of their “Random Acts of Kindness” program. The program is designed to give non-profit organizations money in an area where they have a new store opening. The non-profits are chosen randomly from each new store area.
Glenwood to be Featured in New Harvey Daniel's Book
The team shared insights from their trip to New Orleans where they presented to school leaders about "Nurturing School Change," and brought back institute approaches to model with other Glenwood staff. They also shared with the Board that they co-presented with Steph Harvey and Smokey Daniels during the WSRA State Conference at the Midwest Express Center. Over 2,300 people attended their session, entitled 'The Curious Classroom.'
In mid-April, Harvey 'Smokey' Daniels' book will be released, featuring the work of Glenwood students and staff, including on the cover.
