GLADSTONE COMMUNITY SCHOOL CLASS LISTINGS
BAKING SOURDOUGH AT HOME WITH SAMANTHA ROMANOWSKI
In this class you’ll learn the basics of sourdough baking, with an easy, no-knead method. Participants will learn how to shape, fold and score a loaf, how to take care of your starter, and what to do with leftover starter. You’ll take home strong sourdough starter, a loaf to bake at home, a packet of recipes and a proofing basket! (Please bring a large bowl and 16oz jar.)

BRIOCHE CINNAMON ROLLS WITH SAMANTHA ROMANOWKSI
Learn how to make soft, buttery and delicious brioche dough that you can roll into beautiful pinwheels of cinnamon and sugar in this hands-on class. Learn all the tips and tricks to making delicious overnight brioche cinnamon rolls, cinnamon swirl bread and other brioche dough based delights. Participants will get to taste delectable treats and take home 9 cinnamon buns to bake the next day (and icing ingredients) as well as a packet of recipes and info! (Please bring a 9x13 baking vessel or 2 smaller baking pans.)

BASIC CANNING - TOMATOES
Come take this Hands-On class to learn the basics of “hot water bath” canning. Nan will guide you through what equipment to use, what fruits or veggies to use, and tips for hot and cold packing. Make tomato sauce, canned tomatoes and a special tomato curry preserve!
Bring a sharp paring knife, a cutting board and a small box to hold 2 pint jars.

COLLAGE - CREATIVE EXPLORATION
Interested in exploring Collage? We will work with a wide assortment of colored and textured papers, scraps, old book pages and personal items you choose to add! Collage allows for spontaneous and layered work that can be beautiful, personally meaningful and fun and easy to do! Serafine can help you get focused and get started with materials for inspiration. In this month long class you will dive into a them and create around your theme, discuss ideas about the process and see examples and design concepts to help your pieces!
Please bring any materials that you want to incorporate into you collage - magazines, newspapers, old paintings, old books or personal items. The instructor will also provide materials.

STAINED GLASS FOR BEGINNERS WITH MIKAYLA MOORE
Join us for an opportunity to create your very own stained glass Suncatcher! In this 3 week workshop, you will learn the copper foil method of stained glass as you cut, grind, foil and solder your creation. There will be a variety of beginner friendly patterns for you to choose from. No experience is required, however a certain amount of hand strength is required to cut glass. (If you have any concerns, please contact us) Booklet summarizing what you learned, and how to take care of your Suncatcher is provided. Students are required to be 18+.

Learn about the beautiful shapes of leaves and how to draw them. Using pencil or pen create lovely drawings. Bring leaves or use the leaves provided. Class will talk about shapes, composition and adding values. If you would like to use colored pencil or watercolor pencils that’s fine. All skill levels welcome.

JOURNALING PLUS ART WITH MELISSA GANNON
Love to journal? Want to add more? This class is an introduction to combining small paintings and sketches into your entries. Bring several entries that you wish to illustrate. Create artwork that fits with the entry. (You can work from memory or bring a reference photo.) Then tape or glue your entry to the artwork page. Class will talk about creating simple drawing and paintings to complement your journal entries. Everyone will illustrate at least one entry.

Learn about our different weather patterns in 4 separate classes. Each class is focused on a specific weather pattern. Class is instructed by Portland Meteorologist and CCC Faculty member in the Fire Science Dept, John Saltenberger.

An introduction to the types of weather satellites in operation, their orbits, and their observational capabilities. Emphasis will be placed on a description of the current suite of GOES-R weather satellites operated by NOAA. Websites with real time satellite displays will be provided.

An introduction to radar basics and a description of the capabilities of the network of doppler weather radars operated by NOAA/NWS across the US. This lesson will focus on how weather radars can be used to detect severe weather, especially how doppler capability can be used to identify tornadoes before they strike. .

This lesson will describe the meaning of terminology often used in everyday weather forecasts such as confidence levels, probabilities, and chances. Understanding these will allow a reader to better interpret weather forecasts and more effectively plan for upcoming changes in weather.

This lesson will build on previous lessons on Rossby wave dynamics with additional details on long versus short Rossby waves, jet stream streaks, vorticity, shear, and their implications for large scale weather patterns around the globe.

TAI CHI CHUAN - EVENINGS
Instructed by Michael Beckley, Tai Chi is an ancient art that promotes physical and mental health. It is a moving meditation and has been shown to decrease stress, improve flexibility and balance, reduce blood pressure, and a host of other internal and external benefits. While the health benefits are well known, Tai Chi Chuan is also a martial art and its techniques use redirection and full body motion in order to achieve the goal of self defence. This is a slow and quiet class and each student will progress at his or her own pace.
**Wear comfortable pants (not shorts - some people like pajama pants) and a comfortable top that the sleeves can pushed up or a T-shirt**

What if I request a refund?
If you enroll in an ongoing class (not a one time class) and you feel it is not for you after trying the first one, we will issue you a full refund. For one time classes, cancellation must be received 48 hours prior to the class beginning. (Supply fees may not be refunded if not cancelled 1 week prior to class starting)
