10/27/24 - Student and Family Edition
Winter Activities Program Sign-Ups - Please Complete!
Ski/Ride Season Lease Form
Please complete if you need downhill skis or a snowboard
Please note that we will not be renting equipment at the mountain. If students need equipment, this is the ideal way to access what they need. Purchasing used equipment can be challenging because it often needs tune-up work that can be more costly than a season lease and create safety issues if not fitted or cared for correctly. Also, kids grow out of equipment quickly!!! If your child needs downhill skis or a board to participate in the mountain program, please complete this form. We can support financially for families upon request. For xc skiers and shoers, we have equipment at the school for students to use, but they can certainly bring their own gear.
Reminder About Halloween Costumes...
A Message from Sean McMannon, Superintendent
Safe, Fun, and Inclusive Halloween
KESD Families,
The following are reminders as we approach Halloween to ensure a safe and positive experience in our schools and communities. KESD’s District Equity Policy says “The Kingdom East School District is committed to the success of every student, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, family economics, class, geography, ability, language, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or initial proficiencies.” We never want any of our students to feel marginalized in our schools and or communities, and Halloween costumes can sometimes send hurtful messages either on purpose or unintended. I would suggest everyone view My Culture is Not a Costume video and review the items below to support a safe, fun and inclusive Halloween.
Thanks,
Sean McMannon-KESD Superintendent
Dress Code: Costumes if worn in school should be appropriate for school and follow the school's dress code. Please review the KESD Dress Code)
- Safety: Costumes if worn in school should not hinder vision, and masks are not allowed. Costumes with realistic weapons are prohibited.
- Inappropriate themes: Costumes should not feature inappropriate themes or characters, reference to drugs or alcohol, and not gory, threatening, or offensive.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Costumes if worn in school should be culturally sensitive and not offensive or reinforcing of stereotypes. Avoid stereotypes by not wearing a costume that plays off stereotypes about a group of people. For example, dressing up as Pocahontas can be offensive because it presents a whitewashed version of a group of people who have been victimized. Here are other considerations when designing and choosing costumes
- Don't darken your skin: Don't darken or color your skin for a costume.
- Consider the meaning: Think about whether the costume would show honor or disrespect for a group or person. For example, tribal markings, headdresses, and turbans are inappropriate because they are tied to a specific ceremony or religious meaning.
- Research the culture: If you're not part of the culture, it's important to research it before making assumptions based on stereotypes.
- Don't wear ethnic garb: Wearing ethnic garb can be a common cultural appropriation misstep.

Please watch the following video to begin having a better understanding of how we are teaching students to learn math. When students are practicing math at home. Please refrain from teaching students with algorithms. That was our go-to when we learned. Ask them how they are figuring out problems.

Math Answers and Reasoning
Problem #1 201-199 = 2
Did you realize that the difference between 201 and 199 is 2? If you did, this was quick math. A standard number line would be a great way for a student to show their understanding. No algorithm needed!
Problem #2: 13-7 = 6
If you attempted a standard algorithm with this problem, you got stuck! All you could do was cross out that 1 in the 10's place and attempt to move it, but you still ended up with 13-7. Again, a standard number line with noticing 13 is 3 away from 10 and 7 is 3 away from 10. Add 3+3 and you get 6. It sounds like it might be more complex, but it is not. This is the number sense we need students to develop. This is why 10's pairs are so important. It provides reasoning for larger numbers.
