In case you missed it...
Laura Gray's Quick Slide Deck on Helpful Reports (not just for TLC users)
Many, many thanks to Laura Gray, Glens Falls High School, for whipping up a super quick mini slide deck of LS2 Reports that folks may find helpful! Some of these reports are useful for Destiny schools as well as TLC schools, so definitely check it out.
End of Year Reports, Laura Gray, GFHS
Also--TLC libraries--you can run this report to instantly see the "status" of all items in your collection, and what those collections are, right now. This can be useful for determining holdings codes for inventory, wonky barcodes, inconsistencies in spine label information, and more. Destiny libraries can find this useful to see what is active, overdue, or stuck in transit.
Daily courier services, via BOCES student buses, pause Friday for summer
Just a reminder that MultiMedia's daily courier program pauses as of Friday the 13th, due to the conclusion of high school transport to our BOCES centers for the school year. Weekly courier services continue throughout the summer, with a few exceptions. A few districts have their own courier as well. If you have any questions regarding courier services, contact Alicia Makenzie and Esther Humiston in MultiMedia.
Sora Updates: New collections, and NY Reads is back
New Collections
If you haven't checked lately, there are lots of new things happening with Sora right now. Highlights:
- Sora Sweet Reads: These always-available titles are on loan to us until late August.
- New and updated collections: We are purchasing/renewing a whole boatload of titles! Here are just a couple:
- Comics, and Manga (we ditched the all-access comics collection--it was too big and wasn't being used--in favor of selecting things that our students actually want)
- Who Would Win (sports)
- We also asked OverDrive to remove the clog of holds, so that students have a fresh start on summer reading and listening.
NY Reads is back and includes LOTE/ELL selections
This add-on collection of always-available content in Sora has returned, with greatly expanded resources for students who need resources in languages other than English. If you didn't previously remove it, it's probably still in your Sora platform. If you need to add it, it's easy. This Scribe shows you how.
(Note that if you don't see NY Reads yet to select it, try again tomorrow. OverDrive is still working on access for all districts as I type.)
The NY Reads collection is worth showing your teachers, because everything in there is available to entire classes, all the time.
Collection LOTE/ELL languages include: Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Ukrainian, Albanian, Bengali, Burmese, French, Haitian, Italian, Korean, Malayalam, Nepali, Portuguese, Punjabi, Somali, Urdu, and Vietnamese. (Note that the amount varies by language. If you're looking for a language and don't see it in NY Reads, try looking in the main collection instead, or in OverDrive Marketplace.)
Other collections include Who Would Win, Great Reads (and Listens) for High Schoolers and Middle Schoolers, Swifties, Manga, and Summer Is Coming. (A lot of canon/classic titles are in there, too, some with translations. Worth a look!)
Other Resource Updates--New purchases for the WSWHE region
1. Kids Discover: (K-8) This is now available for everyone. It's primarily geared to grades K-8, but I'm sure it is also useful for older readers who need reading supports and accessibility features. I am applying links to everyone's library.fyi pages this morning, and I have direct links for each district, for anyone who wants them. (If you get an invoice by accident--or if anyone in your district does--you can pass it on to us.)
2. Sooth.fyi: (Grades 5 and up) As far as I know, Sooth is on. (This one has been the most seamless so far.) This is a student-geared search engine for media literacy and research. My guess is that your district has access within Google, ClassLink, and/or Clever, but if you want a link on your library.fyi page, you are welcome to do that (or give me a holler). I will likely ask you to fetch a link and send it to me to apply to your page.
3. News-o-matic: (K-8) This resource is similar to Newsela, and would also benefit older readers who need support. I've been seeing emails from News-o-matic going out to district IT folks/librarian contacts as each district is enabled, and I can help you add to your library.fyi page.
