Together Sailing Toward Success: Principal's Message
Dear Sippican Families and Friends,
We hope this email finds you well. We've had a whirlwind of a week here at Sippican, filled with both learning and fun!
The Marion Fire Department made several special visits to our school to teach us about fire safety. Our preschool, kindergarten, and first-grade students had the opportunity to meet firefighters in their classroom, while grades 2 through 6 participated in a presentation and learned about fire safety and the importance of creating a safe meeting place in case of a fire. We’re incredibly grateful to the Marion Fire Department for their time and dedication to educating our students.
For 6th-grade families who were unable to attend the Camp Burgess in person meeting, please note that we have scheduled another mandatory Zoom meeting on October 15th at 6:00 PM. You can find the meeting link in the VASE message below.
We hope you're enjoying the extra-long weekend! We look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday.
Best,
Principal Dessert and Assistant Principal Thomas
Together Sailing Toward Success
Mission Statement and School-Wide Expectations
Our Mission Statement:
The Sippican School community will be responsible, respectful and kind to ensure a nurturing learning and safe environment.
Our School-Wide Expectations:
"Sippican 3 to Be"
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
Be Kind
Attention: Park Street Side-Walk Work & Safety
Just wanted to let you know that Eversource will be doing some sidewalk work on Park Street on Tuesday, October 15th. We don't think it will affect access to the school, since they'll only be working on the sidewalks.
We continue to receive reports of speeding on Park Street, which puts our entire community at risk. To ensure the safety of our staff, students, families, and bus drivers, please drive carefully and observe the speed limit. Your cooperation in slowing down will help create a safer environment for everyone.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to improve our school community.
Friday, 10/18, will be Pink Day!
Dear Sippican,
Friday, 10/18, will be Pink Day! Please wear pink and bring in a small donation to support the Nicole Podkowa Patient and Caregiver Fund! The money raised will support patients going through cancer treatment at the Southcoast Cancer Center in Fairhaven. The money will help with expenses like rent, groceries, cleaning, etc. Cancer touches all of us! Let’s help others, if we can.
Again feel free to bring in $ on Friday and give to Lisa Horan or classroom teacher. You’re also welcome to Venmo @Stang-Football24. (John and Chris’ football team will be wearing pink and raising money at their game on 10/18.)
Thank you so much!
Lisa Horan

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
World Dyslexia Awareness Day is celebrated on October 8th every year and Dyslexia Awareness Week is celebrated during the first full week of October, which this year is October 7th to 13th. Dyslexia Awareness Month is celebrated throughout the month of October.
Did you know that Walt Disney was dyslexic? There are many famous people with dyslexia who are very successful. Just like Albert Einstein, Whoopi Goldberg and Tom Cruise, just to name a few. The International Dyslexia Association will be sharing stories from people living with dyslexia throughout the month. You can also follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Early screenings and intervention help to identify and support students who demonstrate reading challenges. It is important for our educators to make data informed decisions to drive their instructional practices. This year, across the Tri-town's, each elementary school is administering the DIBELS assessment and the RAN to help identify student's reading abilities.
Over the past few years, Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has prioritized the importance of schools implementing reading programs aligned to the Science of Reading along with administering assessments. You can read more about the state's initiatives here.
To learn more information about dyslexia the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity has great information that defines dyslexia, along with answering frequently asked questions.
