KILLAM PUBLIC SCHOOL
November 4, 2024
Message from the Principal
November Break is almost here! On Friday, November 8, KPS will hold our Remembrance Day Service, with performances from students in grades 1-6. We encourage all students to dress their best as a sign of respect. Family and community members are warmly invited to attend the service in person, or join via live stream on our KPS YouTube Channel—accessible through our website’s Quick Links.
We express our gratitude to those who have served our country in the past and those who continue to serve. We honor the freedoms they have secured for us. We remember.
Junior high students will begin Quarter 2 on November 18, which includes new options. All academic information is accessible on PowerSchool; report cards will not be printed this year. For PowerSchool support, please contact the school office.
Our next Parent Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 19 at 7 pm. Our Parent Council and Parent Advisory Society are key to ensuring our students have opportunities to participate in a variety of activities and have extra resources in their classrooms. We invite all parents to attend and add their voice!
With temperatures dropping, please ensure your child is dressed warmly and appropriately for outdoor play, as all students enjoy outside time 3-4 times a day. Suitable clothing helps them stay comfortable and have more fun.
We hope families can take some time to relax and reconnect over the break. When we return, we’ll be halfway through November, with Christmas Break just around the corner!
Staff Spotlight
Hello All! Most of you know me, but if not, my name is Aleisha Brodie. I was born and raised in Daysland and now live North of Killam on a farm with my husband James. Together we raise our two boys, William and Brandon, who both go to school here at KPS.
I joined the KPS staff in January of 2024, but I was not a stranger in the school as I was part of the Parent Advisory for a few years. My career background is in finance and I worked at the Town of Killam for 17 years before I decided to try a new career path and came here.
Right now I can be found at the arena watching my boys play hockey or at home helping my husband on the farm, cleaning the house or just lounging when I can!
I love working at the school with all of your children, it is never boring here!
Bus Safety Week
Oct. 21-25 was Bus Safety Week. All students had an opportunity to practice evacuation drills and engage in conversation about safety on the bus. Big thanks to Logan and Isaac for bringing their buses and supporting us with these drills.
PowerSchool Information
Please take a few minutes to log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal to view your child’s most up-to-date grades and comments. Our Real-Time Reporting system allows you to stay connected to your child’s learning progress throughout the year, providing insights into their achievements and areas for growth. By regularly checking PowerSchool, you can support your child’s learning journey and celebrate their progress together. Thank you for partnering with us to foster a positive and collaborative learning experience.
While the PowerSchool app provides a convenient way to access information in the moment, it does not offer everything the web browser does. Please see this document for more information about the web browser.
We had a mixup with sizing when we ordered new boys volleyball jerseys. We are selling the extra smaller sizes (Youth Medium and Youth Large). They are great quality shirts and would look fantastic on our young fans!
Halloween Carnival Fun
Thank you to the Killam Parent Advisory for sponsoring the KPS Halloween Carnival. All students and staff enjoyed the afternoon playing games and going through the Haunted House. Your support is greatly appreciated!
Christmas Sharing 2024
Ian Tyson Presentation
On October 24th, our grade seven to nine students, along with several other students from other Flagstaff schools, went to Daysland School for a presentation by Ian Tyson. In this presentation, Ian talked about how people have changed since Covid happened - and how common courtesy has become uncommon courtesy. Examples are saying thank you, holding doors open for others, and doing stuff for others that is not asked of you. Using volunteers, Ian demonstrated how much time we spend in our lifetime doing certain things like standing in line, looking at your phone, etc. Being optimistic in life was a big part of his presentation; he talked about finding the silver lining, or the good things in life. He also told us to get up every morning, telling ourselves it’s going to be a good day. While doing all this, he also made jokes and added a comedic touch to keep the audience engaged. Thanks to FIRST for covering the cost of the event and busing.

VOLLEYBALL
A HUGE thank you to our volleyball coaches this year! Synthia Gordon coached our boys team, and Chelsea Nielsen and Candace MacKinnon coached our girls teams. Coaching is a huge time commitment and we are so thankful to have such amazing coaches. The boys team made it to Divisonals but was unable to move on to Regionals. The girls A team won a silver medal at Divisionals and will continue on to Regionals on November 5. Congratulations to both teams on a great season!
We hosted our Volleyball Pep Rally on November 29. This was a great opportunity to introduce all our players, from minis to grade 9. The staff team took on the Girls B team and the Girls A team played our Boys team. There was lots of cheering and wild waving of pom poms. We love to see our students engaging with our athletics team - Go Kougars!
BASKETBALL
After the November break, our basketball season will be starting. We will have a parent meeting to organize drivers and go over expectations for the season.
