A Message To Families From Mr. Peck
Riverview Families,
Over the next few weeks, learners in all grades will complete their winter FastBridge assessments in reading and math. Your child took these assessments in the fall and will do so again in the spring. This consistent monitoring of progress in reading and math throughout the year allows us to measure the growth our students are showing in those areas and provides our teachers with important information they can use to enhance their own instruction. We are able to see where rapid growth is occurring, what strategies are producing the best results, and potentially where we may need to change course. Of course we know that assessments like these are just snapshots in time and don't always tell us the whole story. We also have to trust our eyes and ears which tell us every day that our students are working hard, growing their skills, and learning new things constantly. All we ask is that students try their best and show us what they know. We are so proud of every one of them!
We will be sharing out some school-wide data from these assessments so you can get a sense of the tremendous amounts of learning that are happening at Riverview each day. If you have any questions about our academic assessment process or want to know more about how your child's fall-to-winter growth, please reach out to your child's teacher after the window closes in a few weeks.
Best wishes for a great week!
Shawn Peck
Principal

Have a Plan For Emergency Late Starts, Early Releases, or FLEX Learning Days
As the weather cools down and we head into the winter months, please take a moment to review the important winter weather information below. Ensure you have a plan for all possible emergency closure situations (late start, early release, or flexible learning day).
Families with child care needs should have alternative arrangements made in advance in case there is a need for a flexible learning day or should weather occur during the day that causes an early release from school. There may be a need to delay the start of school pending improving weather conditions. This may also necessitate alternative child care arrangements.
Important winter weather information can be found at the following links:

No School on Monday, Jan. 20 For MLK Jr. Day of Service
From doi.gov - Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service (MLK Day) is the only federal holiday that is also designated by Congress as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” Participation in service activities has grown each year as more Americans are encouraged to provide meaningful change in their communities. Whether service meets a tangible need, such as fixing up a school or senior center, builds a sense of community or mutual responsibility. In a pandemic environment, service can take on the form of sending a meal through a meal delivery service, serving as a virtual mentor, or donating money to a charitable cause to help those who lack basic essential items.
No matter the choice, service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community. It breaks down barriers by bringing people from different backgrounds together and it benefits those who choose to serve. Coretta Scott King said, “The greatest birthday gift my husband could receive is if people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds celebrated the holiday by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others.”

We Need Your Help! We Are In Need of More Paraprofessional Substitutes
Our paraprofessionals are a vital part of our team and they do so much every day for our students. Like everyone, they have to miss work from time to time due to illness, family matters, etc. When that happens, it leaves our learners with less support. And unfortunately, often times these absences go "unfilled" due to a shortage of capable and willing subs. That is why we are asking for people in our Riverview community to consider being a para sub. The pay is $15 per hour and you can work as much (or as little) as you want. Whether you sub one day or every day, each time you enter a classroom, you are responsible for the helping the most important resource we have in our school -- our children.
If you would like to sign up to sub as a teacher or paraprofessional for the Farmington Schools you will have to apply through Teachers on Call (TOC). Please email or call TOC directly at 1800-713-4439 or apply online at teachersoncall.com.
Keep On Reading Every Night at Home! It Makes a HUGE Difference!
