The Big Tomato
âOh Tomateo, Tomateo, where for art though Tomateo, deny thy dry buns and refuse thy plain nuggetsâŚâ Ok, Ok, so its not Shakespeare, but did you know that ketchup goes way back even before our good friend Bill Shakespeare? Tomato plants, ketchups raw form, came to England by way of South America in the 1600s during Mr. Shakespeareâs time, but everyone was too afraid to eat them and let them spoil (I think they may have been thrown at the stage to interrupt bad plays) (History.com). What a missed opportunity by the Brits!
Interestingly though, ketchup actually began as a âfermented paste made from fish entrails, meat byproducts and soybeansâ in China in the 300s bc called âge-thcupâ (History.com); but as we Americanâs do, we like to make things our own, and maybe add a little sugar. Persevering and modernizing itself to its current form, ketchup is now a glorious addition to most lunch and dinner tables, as well as breakfast on those eggs, ever since Heinz brought it to us in 1812 and made it the modern wonder that it is (History.com).
So how does McKinley celebrate this long lasting ancient old creation? We call on The Big Tomato! The Big Tomato helps all of our students share in this tasty, sweet history whenever they come to help with lunch.
Do you want to be a part of history? Come join us by volunteering for lunch and become the next, Big Tomato!
